Einstellungen zum eigenen Altern: Eine Alters- oder eine Ressourcenfrage?

Zusammenfassung : Generelle positive und negative Stereotype und Einstellungen zum Alter können erhebliche Auswirkungen auf den weiteren Verlauf kognitiver und körperlicher Leistungsfähigkeit im Alter haben. Wenig bekannt ist bisher, wie stark Einstellungen zum eigenen Altern von (a) der aktuellen Ressourcenlage einer Person, (b) den Veränderungen der Ressourcenlage oder (c) dem zunehmenden Alter von Personen abhängen. Ziel der vorliegenden Studie war es, die Zusammenhänge zwischen individuell verfügbaren körperlichen, psychischen und kognitiven Ressourcen einerseits und den Einstellungen zum eigenen Altern andererseits zu untersuchen. Diese Zusammenhänge wurden mit den Daten von N=500 1930-1932 geborenen Teilnehmenden (Alter: M=63,0, SD=0,9 zu T1 und M=66,9, SD=0,9 zu T2) der Interdisziplinären Längsschnittstudie des Erwachsenenalters (ILSE) geprüft. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Einstellungen zum eigenen Altern (a) mit zunehmendem Alter negativer werden, (b) wesentlich von der aktuellen Ressourcenlage abhängig sind, (c) Veränderungen der Ressourcenlage sich zusätzlich auf die Einstellungen zum eigenen Altern auswirken, und (d) das Alter eher als Verstärker des Zusammenhangs zwischen Ressourcen und Einstellungen denn als eigenständiger Einflussfaktor auf die Einstellungen zum eigenen Alter auftrit

Quantum Games

In these lecture notes we investigate the implications of the identification of strategies with quantum operations in game theory beyond the results presented in [J. Eisert, M. Wilkens, and M. Lewenstein, Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 3077 (1999)]. After introducing a general framework, we study quantum games with a classical analogue in order to flesh out the peculiarities of game theoretical settings in the quantum domain. Meal pattern among Norwegian primary-school children and longitudinal associations between meal skipping and weight status

Objective: To investigate meal pattern longitudinally and explore whether meal skipping was associated with overweight among Norwegian children and adolescents. Design: Longitudinal study. Children’s meal frequencies were reported by their parents using a retrospective FFQ. Weight and height were measured by public health nurses. Descriptive data comparing 4th and 7th grade were analysed by paired-sample t tests for continuous variables and x2 tests for categorical variables. Odds ratio estimates, including confidence intervals, with BMI category (normal/overweight) as the dependent variable, were determined through logistic regression analyses. Setting: Primary schools, Telemark County, Norway. Subjects: A cohort of 428 Norwegian boys and girls; 4th graders in 2007, 7th graders in 2010. Results: The number of children eating four main meals per day (regular meal frequency) decreased from 4th grade (47 %) to 7th grade (38 %; P 5 0?001). Those who ate regular meals in 4th grade but not in 7th grade had higher odds (OR 5 3?1; 95 % CI 1?1, 9?0) of being overweight in 7th grade after adjusting for gender, maternal education and physical activity, but the odds ratio was not statistically significant after adjusting for overweight in 4th grade (OR 5 2?8; 95 % CI 0?7, 11?6). Conclusions: The present study showed significant increases in overall meal skipping among children between 4th and 7th grade. The results indicate an association between overweight and meal skipping, but additional prospective and longitudinal analyses and intervention trials are warranted to confirm this relationship.publishedVersio

Structural basis for HCMV Pentamer receptor recognition and antibody neutralization

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) represents the viral leading cause of congenital birth defects and uses the gH/ gL/UL128-130-131A complex (Pentamer) to enter different cell types, including epithelial and endothelial cells. Upon infection, Pentamer elicits the most potent neutralizing response against HCMV, representing a key vaccine candidate. Despite its relevance, the structural basis for Pentamer receptor recognition and antibody neutralization is largely unknown. Here, we determine the structures of Pentamer bound to neuropilin 2 (NRP2) and a set of potent neutralizing antibodies against HCMV. Moreover, we identify thrombomodulin (THBD) as a functional HCMV receptor and determine the structures of the Pentamer-THBD complex. Unexpectedly, both NRP2 and THBD also promote dimerization of Pentamer. Our results provide a framework for understanding HCMV receptor engagement, cell entry, antibody neutralization, and outline strategies for antiviral therapies against HCMV

Acute haemoabdomen associated with Angiostrongylus vasorum infection in a dog: a case report

A one-year-old intact female, Danish shorthaired pointer was referred to the emergency service with a history of acute collapse and pale mucous membranes after a month of reduced activity but with no other clinical signs. An ultrasound examination of the abdomen indicated the presence of a large amount of free fluid with no obvious cause such as neoplasia or splenic rupture. Fluid analysis had the macroscopic appearance of blood with no signs of infection or neoplasia. Multiple Angiostrongylus vasorum L1 larvae were revealed on a direct rectal faecal smear. The dog was treated with fenbendazole 25 mg/kg orally once daily for 20 days and given supportive treatment. The dog was stabilised on this treatment. Haemoabdomen is a clinical sign where surgical intervention is often considered an integral part of the diagnostic investigation (i.e., laparotomy) or treatment. Failing to make the diagnosis of canine angiostrongylosis before performing surgery may have a serious adverse affect on the outcome. Consequently, in areas where A. vasorum is enzootic, a Baermann test and a direct faecal smear should be included in the initial diagnostic investigation of all dogs presenting with bleeding disorders of unknown origin

From Odd Encounters to a Prospective Confluence: Dance-Philosophy

This text inquires into the relationship between Western philosophy and Western theatre dance from their odd encounters in modernity to the current affiliations between contemporary choreographic poetics, critical theory and contemporary philosophical thought. The point of departure for the inquiry is a discussion of the three problems that have structured the historically vexed relationship between dance and philosophy: dance’s belated acquisition of the status of an art discipline, the special ontological status of the work of dance, and the limits of dance’s meaning-production set by the theme of bodily movement’s “ephemerality” and “disappearance.” After critically examining the approaches of Alain Badiou and Jacques Rancière in whose philosophies dance is relegated to a metaphor or, even worse, to an ahistorical conduit for a general ontology, the author makes a case for another movement of thought that arises in dance practice and is at the same time philosophical, rooted in Spinoza’s (and Deleuze’s) principle of expression. Demonstrating how choreographers, like Xavier Le Roy and Jonathan Burrows, create by “posing problems,” Cvejić presents a theory of “expressive concepts,” whereby choreography contributes to a philosophical rethinking of the relationship between the body, movement and time. This points to the new prospects of a kind of “dance-philosophy,” in which the epistemic hierarchy is reversed: the stake is no longer in what philosophy could do for dance, but how an experimental, radically pragmatic orientation in dance offers a practical framework for theorizing perception, concept-formation and other philosophical issues
