    Paris: a Desire Named Streetcar

On the southern part of the Parisian MarĂ©chaux' boulevards, the old bus line Petite Ceinture has been replaced by a modern tramway (T3). Simultaneously, the road-space has been narrowed by about a third. A survey conducted on 1,000 users of the T3 shows that the tramway hardly generated any modal report from the private cars (PC) towards the public transit (PT). However, it did generate important intra-modal transfers: from bus and subways towards tramway concerning the PT, surely from MarĂ©chaux' boulevards towards the Parisian Ring-Road (boulevard pĂ©riphĂ©rique, PRR) and/or adjacent streets for the PC. The various benefits and costs of these changes are evaluated in this research. The welfare gains made by PT users are more than compensated by the time losses of the motorists, and in particular, by the additional cost of road congestion on the PRR. The same conclusion applies with regard to CO2 emissions: the reductions saved with the replacement of the busses and some (few) PC are less important than the increased pollution induced by the lengthening of the automobile trips and the increased congestion on the PRR. Even if one ignores the initial investment of 350 M€, the social impact of the T3 project, illustrated by its Clear Discount Value (CDV), is strongly negative. This is especially true for suburbanites. Concerning the lonely inhabitants (electors) of Paris, our analysis shows that they pocket the main part of the benefits while supporting a weak fraction of the costs.Tramway, Costs-Benefits Analysis, Road Congestion, CO2 Emissions

The first year of current issues in sport science (2016) – journey has started

CURRENT ISSUES IN SPORT SCIENCE (CISS) hast started by building an international team with experts from all fields of sport science around an editorial team of six section editors and one editor in chief. After finding a publisher and the development of layout and website, the formal outbreak in 2016 lead to one target article about quiet eye research with 15 commentaries. Out of nine original submissions, two were published in 2016, some more are in the pipeline. Overall, for sure not a rash start but a sound development of a long-term project, which now is dependent from high quality submissions of sport scientists

The practice of peer review is to ensure the research published in Current Issues in Sport Science (CISS) is of the highest standard. Peer review lies at the heart of scholarly publishing and is utilized by all reputable journals. Our referees and section editors play a crucial role in developing the reputation of Current Issues in Sport Science (CISS) to a leading forum for original research in the field. Therefore, I would like to formally thank all who have so willingly and voluntarily contributed to the journal in 2016

Why a new sport science journal?

This “inaugural” editorial summarizes conversations which have led to the development of the journal “Current Issues in Sport Science (CISS)”. The main reason for CISS was, that – despite developing rapidly – sport science has a lack of “full scope sport science journals”. Furthermore, sport science as an interdisciplinary discipline I believe can benefit from a reinforced identity through mutual acceptance of all streams. This new journal aims to address this need for more inclusive outlets for sport science. The last section of this editorial describes methods of publication concluding that open access (OA) publication, which guarantees free use and rapid distribution of all published work, is the best approach for this Journal

Sport management research - an integral part of sport science?

    Get PDF
CURRENT ISSUES IN SPORT SCIENCE (CISS) has published in the last year 50% of the research articles in the section ‘sociology & economics’. The topics of these recently published articles in CISS show the importance and diversity of this area of research. The growing body of research in sport management has demonstrated that this scientific field has become a relevant piece in the interdisciplinary mosaic of sport science. In the future, these contributions might lead to an increase of sport management divisions within the departments of sport science to satisfy the growing demand of sport management related education

Progress on Advanced Cryo-Tanks Structural Design Achieved in CHATT-Project

The EU-FP7-funded study called CHATT (Cryogenic Hypersonic Advanced Tank Technologies) was initiated early 2012 and successfully finished in June 2015. One of its core objectives has been the investigation of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) cryogenic pressure tanks. The focus of the paper is on the technology development tasks of the study and its major obtained results including manufacturing and testing of four subscale tanks
