In My View
I believe that Parshall and I would probably agree on 99.9 percent of all things Pacific War. I also believe that his theories and speculations are totally appropri- ate for a group of friends huddled around a fireplace sipping their drinks and throwing out “what if ” scenarios about the Pacific War. But Parshall’s theories, speculations, and conjecture regarding Fuchida are anything but “history.

Impact of combined plaque structural stress and wall shear stress on coronary plaque progression, regression and changes in composition
Background: The focal distribution of atherosclerotic plaques suggests that local biomechanical factors may influence plaque development.
Methods and Results: We studied 40 patients at baseline and over 12 months by virtual-histology intravascular ultrasound and bi-plane coronary angiography. We calculated plaque structural stress (PSS), defined as the mean of the maximum principal stress at the peri-luminal region, and wall shear stress (WSS), defined as the parallel frictional force exerted by blood flow on the endothelial surface, in areas undergoing progression or regression. Changes in plaque area (PA), plaque burden (PB), necrotic core (NC), fibrous tissue (FT), fibrofatty tissue (FF) and dense calcium (DC) were calculated for each co-registered frame. A total of 4029 co-registered frames were generated. In areas with progression, high PSS was associated with larger increases in NC and small increases in FT vs. low PSS (difference inΔNC: 0.24±0.06mm2; p<0.0001, difference in ΔFT: -0.15±0.08 mm2; p=0.049). In areas with regression, high PSS was associated with increased NC and decreased FT (difference in ΔNC: 0.15±0.04; p=0.0005, difference in ΔFT: -0.31±0.06mm2; p<0.0001). Low WSS was associated with increased PB vs. high WSS in areas with progression (difference in ΔPB: 3.3±0.4%; p<0.001) with a similar pattern observed in areas with regression (difference in ΔPB: 1.2±0.4%; p=0.004). PSS and WSS were largely independent of each other (R2 =0.002; p=0.001).
Conclusions: Areas with high PSS are associated with compositional changes consistent with increased plaque vulnerability. Areas with low WSS are associated with more plaque growth in areas that progress and less plaque loss in areas that regress. The interplay of PSS and WSS may govern important changes in plaque size and composition
Temperature and frequency dependent optical properties of ultra-thin Au films
While the optical properties of thin metal films are well understood in the
visible and near-infrared range, little has been done in the mid- and
far-infrared region. Here we investigate ultra-thin gold films prepared on
Si(111)(7 x 7) in UHV by measuring in the frequency range between 500 cm-1 and
7000 cm-1 and for temperatures between 300 K and 5 K. The nominal thickness of
the gold layers ranges between one monolayer and 9 nm. The frequency and
temperature dependences of the thicker films can be well described by the Drude
model of a metal, when taking into account classical size effects due to
surface scattering. The films below the percolation threshold exhibit a
non-metallic behavior: the reflection increases with frequency and decreases
with temperature. The frequency dependence can partly be described by a
generalized Drude model. The temperature dependence does not follow a simple
activation process. For monolayers we observe a transition between surface
states around 1100 cm-1.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figure
Living expressions: An initial understanDing
Living Expressions is a term that was created to describe a unique, formalized process of interpersonal communication, in which individuals share often unexpressed feelings of appreciation with one another. This qualitative study explored a single case, single process event, based on interviews with the participants. A constructivist paradigm guides the research with intentional avoidance of a priori theory, and institutes an emergent design with the human as instrument. The purpose of the study was to foster a greater understanding of a new and unusual formal process that holds numerous potentially positive implications in its widespread application. The review of the literature offered an overview of the most closely related, primary communication process of positive self-disclosure, operationalized the focus of the study, and identified similar processes. The discussion of the data took the narrative form of an impressionistic ethnography describing the meaning the event held for its participants, through their eyes
