    Bound states in two spatial dimensions in the non-central case

    We derive a bound on the total number of negative energy bound states in a potential in two spatial dimensions by using an adaptation of the Schwinger method to derive the Birman-Schwinger bound in three dimensions. Specifically, counting the number of bound states in a potential gV for g=1 is replaced by counting the number of g_i's for which zero energy bound states exist, and then the kernel of the integral equation for the zero-energy wave functon is symmetrized. One of the keys of the solution is the replacement of an inhomogeneous integral equation by a homogeneous integral equation.Comment: Work supported in part by the U.S. Department of Energy under Grant No. DE-FG02-84-ER4015

    The nature of operating flight loads and their effect on propulsion system structures

    Past diagnostics studies revealed the primary causes of performance deterioration of high by-pass turbofan engines to be flight loads, erosion, and thermal distortion. The various types of airplane loads that are imposed on the engine throughout the lifetime of an airplane are examined. These include flight loads from gusts and maneuvers and ground loads from takeoff, landing, and taxi conditions. Clarification is made in definitions of the airframer's limit and ultimate design loads and the engine manufacturer's operating design loads. Finally, the influence of these loads on the propulsion system structures is discussed

    A Monte Carlo study of surface critical phenomena: The special point

    We study the special point in the phase diagram of a semi-infinite system, where the bulk transition is in the three-dimensional Ising universality class. To this end we perform a finite size scaling study of the improved Blume-Capel model on the simple cubic lattice with two different types of surface interactions. In order to check for the effect of leading bulk corrections we have also simulated the spin-1/2 Ising model on the simple cubic lattice. We have accurately estimated the surface enhancement coupling at the special point of these models. We find yts=0.718(2)y_{t_s}=0.718(2) and yhs=1.6465(6)y_{h_s}=1.6465(6) for the surface renormalization group exponents of the special transitions. These results are compared with previous ones obtained by using field theoretic methods and Monte Carlo simulations of the spin-1/2 Ising model. Furthermore we study the behaviour of the surface transition near the special point and finally we discuss films with special boundary conditions at one surface and fixed ones at the other.Comment: 21 pages, 2 figures. figure 1 replaced, various typos correcte

    The next generation of navigation and positioning systems must provide greater accuracy and reliability in a range of challenging environments to meet the needs of a variety of mission-critical applications. No single navigation technology is robust enough to meet these requirements on its own, so a multisensor solution is required. Known environmental features, such as signs, buildings, terrain height variation, and magnetic anomalies, may or may not be available for positioning. The system could be stationary, carried by a pedestrian, or on any type of land, sea, or air vehicle. Furthermore, for many applications, the environment and host behavior are subject to change. A multi-sensor solution is thus required. The expert knowledge problem is compounded by the fact that different modules in an integrated navigation system are often supplied by different organizations, who may be reluctant to share necessary design information if this is considered to be intellectual property that must be protected

    We consider the ATLAS and CMS searches for dijet resonances, as well as the ATLAS search for like-sign dimuon pairs at the LHC with 7 TeV center of mass energy. We interpret their exclusions in terms of bounds on the supersymmetric R-parity violating parameter space.     Measurement of energy eigenstates by a slow detector

    We propose a method for a weak continuous measurement of the energy eigenstates of a fast quantum system by means of a "slow" detector. Such a detector is only sensitive to slowly-changing variables, e. g. energy, while its back-action can be limited solely to decoherence of the eigenstate superpositions. We apply this scheme to the problem of detection of quantum jumps between energy eigenstates in a harmonic oscillator.Comment: 4 page

    Fluctuations and correlations in population models with age structure

    We study the population profile in a simple discrete time model of population dynamics. Our model, which is closely related to certain ``bit-string'' models of evolution, incorporates competition for resources via a population dependent death probability, as well as a variable reproduction probability for each individual as a function of age. We first solve for the steady-state of the model in mean field theory, before developing analytic techniques to compute Gaussian fluctuation corrections around the mean field fixed point. Our computations are found to be in good agreement with Monte-Carlo simulations. Finally we discuss how similar methods may be applied to fluctuations in continuous time population models.Comment: 4 page

    Inventory Information

    In a market with symmetric information about fundamentals, can information-based trade still arise? Consider bond and FX markets, where private information about nominal cash flows is generally absent, but participants are convinced that superior information exists. We analyze a class of asymmetric information - inventory information - that is unrelated to fundamentals, but still forecasts future price (by forecasting future discount factors). Empirical work based on the analysis shows that inventory information in FX does indeed forecast discount factors, and does so over both short and long horizons. The immediate price impact of shocks to inventory information is large, roughly 50 percent of that from public information shocks (the latter being the whole story under symmetric information). Within about 30 minutes the transitory effect dies out, and prices reflect a permanent effect from inventory information that ranges between 15 and 30 percent of that from public information.
