Probing crystallisation of a fluoro-apatite - mullite system using neutron diffraction
Real-time small angle neutron scattering and wide angle neutron scattering studies were undertaken concurrently on a glass ionomer of nominal composition 4.5(SiO2)-3(Al2O3)-1.5(P2O5)-3(CaO)-2(CaF2). Neutron studies were conducted as a function of temperature to investigate the crystallisation process. No amorphous phase separation was observed at room temperature and the onset of crystallisation was found to occur at 650Ā°C, which is 90Ā°C lower than previously reported. The first crystalline phase observed corresponded to fluorapatite; it was only upon further heating was the mullite phase became present. The crystallite size at 650Ā°C was found to be ~115Ć
and the result was consistent across all measurements
Aspects of the washout of salmonid eggs. 3. Observations on the settlement of artifical eggs in a section of natural stream channel at several different discharges
It is of value to know the approximate distance of travel at different stream discharges and/or water velocities, of salmonid eggs which have been displaced from redds by spates. This report describes studies in 20 m of stream channel upstream of the fish trap in Dubby Sike. Observations were made on the relation- ships between discharge and water depth and velocity and also on the relationships between water velocity and the settlement of artificial trout eggs. The main aim was to test the hypothesis that, at any given water velocity, eggs would drift smaller distances in a natural stream than in the experimental channels
On the equivalence between the Boltzmann equation and classical field theory at large occupation numbers
We consider a system made up of exictations of a neutral scalar field, \phi,
having a \lambda\phi^4 interaction term. Starting from an ensemble where the
occupation number f is large, but \lambda f is small, we develop a classical
field theory description of the evolution of the system toward equilibrium. A
Boltzmann equation naturally emerges in this description and we show by
explicit calculation that the collision term is the same as that coming from
elastic scattering. This shows the equivalence of a Boltzmann equation
description and a classical field theory description of the same system.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure

A Cell-Centered Adaptive Projection Method for the IncompressibleNavier-Stokes Equations in Three Dimensions
We present a method for computing incompressible viscousflows in three dimensions using block-structured local refinement in bothspace and time. This method uses a projection formulation based on acell-centered approximate projection, combined with the systematic use ofmultilevel elliptic solvers to compute increments in the solutiongenerated at boundaries between refinement levels due to refinement intime. We use an L_0-stable second-order semi-implicit scheme to evaluatethe viscous terms. Results are presentedto demonstrate the accuracy andeffectiveness of this approach
Sfermion masses in the supersymmetric economical 3-3-1 model
Sfermion masses and eigenstates in the supersymmetric economical 3-3-1 model
are studied. By lepton number conservation, the exotic squarks and
superpartners of ordinary quarks are decoupled. Due to the fact that in the
3-3-1 models, one generation of quarks behaves differently from other two, by
R-parity conservation, the mass mixing matrix of the squarks in this model are
smaller than that in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). Assuming
substantial mixing in pairs of highest flavours, we are able to get mass
spectrum and eigenstates of all the sfermions. In the effective approximation,
the slepton mass splittings in the first two generations, are consistent with
those in the MSSM, namely: m^2_{\tilde{l}_L} - m^2_{\tilde{\nu}_{l L}} =
m_W^2 \cos 2\ga . In addition, within the above effective limit,
there exists degeneracy among sneutrinos in each multiplet:

MSSM, the squark mass splittings are different for each generation and not to

ISPIDER Central: an integrated database web-server for proteomics
Despite the growing volumes of proteomic data, integration of the underlying results remains problematic owing to differences in formats, data captured, protein accessions and services available from the individual repositories. To address this, we present the ISPIDER Central Proteomic Database search (http://www.ispider.manchester.ac.uk/cgi-bin/ProteomicSearch.pl), an integration service offering novel search capabilities over leading, mature, proteomic repositories including PRoteomics IDEntifications database (PRIDE), PepSeeker, PeptideAtlas and the Global Proteome Machine. It enables users to search for proteins and peptides that have been characterised in mass spectrometry-based proteomics experiments from different groups, stored in different databases, and view the collated results with specialist viewers/clients. In order to overcome limitations imposed by the great variability in protein accessions used by individual laboratories, the European Bioinformatics Institute's Protein Identifier Cross-Reference (PICR) service is used to resolve accessions from different sequence repositories. Custom-built clients allow users to view peptide/protein identifications in different contexts from multiple experiments and repositories, as well as integration with the Dasty2 client supporting any annotations available from Distributed Annotation System servers. Further information on the protein hits may also be added via external web services able to take a protein as input. This web server offers the first truly integrated access to proteomics repositories and provides a unique service to biologists interested in mass spectrometry-based proteomics
Collapse of a semiflexible polymer in poor solvent
We investigate the dynamics and the pathways of the collapse of a single,
semiflexible polymer in a poor solvent via 3-D Brownian Dynamics simulations.
Earlier work indicates that the condensation of semiflexible polymers
generically proceeds via a cascade through metastable racquet-shaped,
long-lived intermediates towards the stable torus state. We investigate the
rate of decay of uncollapsed states, analyze the preferential pathways of
condensation, and describe likelihood and lifespan of the different metastable
states. The simulation are performed with a bead-stiff spring model with
excluded volume interaction and exponentially decaying attractive potential.
The semiflexible chain collapse is studied as functions of the three relevant
length scales of the phenomenon, i.e., the total chain length , the
persistence length and the condensation length , where is a measure of the attractive potential per unit
length. Two dimensionless ratios, and , suffice to describe
the decay rate of uncollapsed states, which appears to scale as . The condensation sequence is described in terms of the time series
of the well separated energy levels associated with each metastable collapsed
state. The collapsed states are described quantitatively through the spatial
correlation of tangent vectors along the chain. We also compare the results
obtained with a locally inextensible bead-rod chain and with a phantom
bead-spring model. Finally, we show preliminary results on the effects of
steady shear flow on the kinetics of collapse.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
The Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction across a tunneling junction out of equilibrium
The Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between two magnetic
- spin impurities across a tunneling junction is studied when the system
is driven out of equilibrium through biasing the junction. The nonequilibrium
situation is handled with the Keldysh time-loop perturbation formalism in
conjunction with appropriate coupling methods for tunneling systems due to
Caroli and Feuchtwang. We find that the presence of a nonequilibrium bias
across the junction leads to an interference of several fundamental
oscillations, such that in this tunneling geometry, it is possible to tune the
interaction between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic coupling at a fixed
impurity configuration, simply by changing the bias across the junction.
Furthermore, it is shown that the range of the RKKY interaction is altered out
of equilibrium, such that in particular the interaction energy between two
slabs of spins scales extensively with the thickness of the slabs in the
