Why must we work in the phase space?
We are going to prove that the phase-space description is fundamental both in
the classical and quantum physics. It is shown that many problems in
statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, quasi-classical theory and in the
theory of integrable systems may be well-formulated only in the phase-space

The genotype-phenotype relationship in multicellular pattern-generating models - the neglected role of pattern descriptors
Background: A deep understanding of what causes the phenotypic variation arising from biological patterning
processes, cannot be claimed before we are able to recreate this variation by mathematical models capable of
generating genotype-phenotype maps in a causally cohesive way. However, the concept of pattern in a
multicellular context implies that what matters is not the state of every single cell, but certain emergent qualities
of the total cell aggregate. Thus, in order to set up a genotype-phenotype map in such a spatiotemporal pattern
setting one is actually forced to establish new pattern descriptors and derive their relations to parameters of the
original model. A pattern descriptor is a variable that describes and quantifies a certain qualitative feature of the
pattern, for example the degree to which certain macroscopic structures are present. There is today no general
procedure for how to relate a set of patterns and their characteristic features to the functional relationships,
parameter values and initial values of an original pattern-generating model. Here we present a new, generic
approach for explorative analysis of complex patterning models which focuses on the essential pattern features
and their relations to the model parameters. The approach is illustrated on an existing model for Delta-Notch
lateral inhibition over a two-dimensional lattice.
Results: By combining computer simulations according to a succession of statistical experimental designs,
computer graphics, automatic image analysis, human sensory descriptive analysis and multivariate data modelling,
we derive a pattern descriptor model of those macroscopic, emergent aspects of the patterns that we consider
of interest. The pattern descriptor model relates the values of the new, dedicated pattern descriptors to the
parameter values of the original model, for example by predicting the parameter values leading to particular
patterns, and provides insights that would have been hard to obtain by traditional methods.
Conclusion: The results suggest that our approach may qualify as a general procedure for how to discover and
relate relevant features and characteristics of emergent patterns to the functional relationships, parameter values
and initial values of an underlying pattern-generating mathematical model

Limiting the caesarean section rate in low risk pregnancies is key to lowering the trend of increased abdominal deliveries: an observational study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>As the rate of Caesarean sections (CS) continues to rise in Western countries, it is important to analyze the reasons for this trend and to unravel the underlying motives to perform CS. This research aims to assess the incidence and trend of CS in a population-based birth register in order to identify patient groups with an increasing risk for CS.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Data from the Flemish birth register 'Study Centre for Perinatal Epidemiology' (SPE) were used for this historic control comparison. Caesarean sections (CS) from the year 2000 (N = 10540) were compared with those from the year 2008 (N = 14016). By means of the Robson classification, births by Caesarean section were ordered in 10 groups according to mother - and delivery characteristics.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Over a period of eight years, the CS rise is most prominent in women with previous sections and in nulliparous women with a term cephalic in spontaneous labor. The proportion of inductions of labor decreases in favor of elective CS, while the ongoing inductions of labor more often end in non-elective CS.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In order to turn back the current CS trend, we should focus on low-risk primiparae. Avoiding unnecessary abdominal deliveries in this group will also have a long-term effect, in that the number of repeat CS will be reduced in the future. For the purpose of self-evaluation, peer discussion on the necessity of CS, as well as accurate registration of the main indication for CS are recommended.</p
Effect of seasonal changes in the pathways of methanogenesis on the δ13C values of pore water methane in a Michigan peatland
The δ13C value of pore water methane produced in a Michigan peatland varied by 11% during the year. This isotopic shift resulted from large seasonal changes in the pathways of methane production. On the basis of mass balance calculations, the δ13C value of methane from CO2 reduction (average =-71.4 ± 1.8%) was depleted in 13C compared to that produced from acetate (-44.4 ± 8.2%o). The dissolved methane at the site remained heavy (approximately-51%o) during most of the year. Tracer experiments using 14C-labeled CO2 indicated that during January 110 ± 25% of the methane was produced by CO2 reduction. Because of low-methane production rates during the winter, this C-depleted methane had only a slight effect on the isotopic composition of the methane pool. In early spring when peat temperatures and methane production rates increased, the δ13C value of the dissolved methane in shallow peat was influenced by the isotopically light methane and approached-61‰. Peat incubation experiments conducted at 15°C in May and June (when the peat reaches its maximum temperature) indicated that an average of 84 ± 9% of the methane production was from acetate and had an average δ13C value of-48.7 ± 5.6‰. Rising acetate concentrations during April-May (approaching 1 mmol L-1(mM)) followed by a rapid decrease in acetate concentrations during May-June reflected the shift toward methane production dominated by acetate fermentation. During this period, dissolved methane in shallow peat at the site returned to heavier values (approximately-5 l%o) similar to that produced in the incubation experiments
Asymptotics and local constancy of characters of p-adic groups
In this paper we study quantitative aspects of trace characters
of reductive -adic groups when the representation varies. Our approach
is based on the local constancy of characters and we survey some other related
results. We formulate a conjecture on the behavior of relative to
the formal degree of , which we are able to prove in the case where
is a tame supercuspidal. The proof builds on J.-K.~Yu's construction and the
