Paradoxical effects of Worrisome Thoughts Suppression: the influence of depressive mood

Thought suppression increases the persistence of unwanted idiosyncratic worries thoughts when individuals try to suppress them. The failure of suppression may contribute to the development and maintenance of emotional disorders. Depressive people seem particulary prone to engage in unsuccessful mental control strategies such as thought suppression. Worry has been reported to be elevated in depressed individuals and a dysphoric mood may also contribute for the failure of suppression. No studies examine, however, the suppression of worisome thoughts in individuals with depressive symptoms. To investigate the suppression effects of worrisome thoughts, 46 participants were selected according to the cut-off score of a depressive symptomatology scale and they were divided in two groups (subclinical and nonclinical group). All the individuals took part in an experimental paradigm of thought suppression. The results of the mixed factorial analysis of variance revealed an increased frequency of worrisome thoughts during the suppression phase on depending of the depressive symptoms. MONITORES AMBIENTAIS: INTRODUÇÃO E GESTÃO AMBIENTAL

O presente ensaio objetiva relatar os resultados de uma atividade de extensão promovida pelo curso de Engenharia Sanitária e Ambiental, em parceria com o Comitê do Rio do Peixe e com a GERED, envolvendo 75 alunos do sexto ano do Ensino Fundamental de duas escolas de Educação Básica, localizadas na região de abrangência da UNOESC Videira, visando formar agentes de transformação nas comunidades, denominados Monitores Ambientais. Essa atividade foi dividida em cinco módulos e para este recorte será apresentado o módulo II de Introdução e Gestão Ambiental, ministrado pela professora Vanessa Wegner Agostini e monitorado pelos acadêmicos Géssica Simon, Maria Eduarda de Matos, Daniela dos Santos, Maiara Furckel, Dara Rafaela Baze de Miranda e Djonatan Tibes dos Santos. Nesse módulo, as atividades foram realizadas no laboratório de Biologia Geral da Universidade e os alunos após compreenderem a ligação entre os micro-organismos com as questões ambientais e a importância de conhecer os seres vivos para conseguir planejar ações de gestão ambiental, foram instrumentalizados sobre a maneira correta de utilizar o microscópio e puderam preparar lâminas de células animal, vegetal, protozóarios e observá-las. Na ocasião, ainda, puderam visualizar vermes como a tênia e a lombriga em lupa e manusear a coleção de espécies nativas e exóticas taxidermizadas, disponíveis no laboratório. A partir das atividades realizadas nesse módulo, os alunos puderam ser sensibilizados sobre a necessidade de conhecer a importância ecológica dos seres vivos para contribuir com a preservação dos mesmos

MONITOR AMBIENTAL: QUALIDADE DAS ÁGUAS

O curso de Engenharia Sanitária e Ambiental, sob a orientação do professor e coordenador do curso Andrei Goldbach, realizou o projeto de extensão MONITOR AMBIENTAL. Na sua segunda edição, o projeto contou com a participação de 75 alunos do ensino Fundamental da rede pública de ensino dos municípios de Videira e de Pinheiro Preto. O projeto ainda contou com o apoio do Comitê do Rio do Peixe e da GERED de Videira. Foram desenvolvidos 5 módulos de áreas distintas para proporcionar ao aluno um conhecimento global sobre o assunto. Os módulos foram divididos em: I: Recursos Hídricos e Energias Alternativas; II: Bacias Hidrográficas; III: Resíduos Sólidos; IV: Saneamento básico e V: Vigilância em Saúde. No último encontro foi realizado uma formatura com entrega de certificado de participação reunindo todos os 75 alunos partipantes, diretores das escolas, diretor de graduação da UNOESC de Videira e o Vice reitor de campus Ildo Fabris. No módulo de qualidade das águas, os alunos tiveram a oportunidade de realizar dois ensaios laboratoriais: i) ensaio de floculação-coagulação em jartest e, ii) ensaio fotoquímico em fotoreator na presença de radiação UVC e peróxido de hidrogênio. Adicionalmente, os alunos assistiram uma explanação sobre o ciclo da água, coleta e tratamento de água para abastecimento público. Conclui-se com o trabalho desenvolvido que  o desenvolvimento de atividades de educação ambiental associadas às atividades laboratoriais e de pesquisa na Universidade, contribuem de forma significativa na formação do aluno como futuro cidadão

EDUCAÇÃO AMBIENTAL NAS ESCOLAS DE ENSINO FUNDAMENTAL DO MEIO OESTE CATARINENSE: MÓDULO SANEAMENTO BÁSICO

O curso de Engenharia Sanitária e Ambiental, com o intuito de promover a educação ambiental e formar agentes de transformação nas comunidades, implantou o projeto de Extensão de Educação Ambiental nas escolas de Ensino Fundamental do Meio Oeste Catarinense, visando o desenvolvimento dos "monitores ambientais". O projeto é realizado em parceria com o Comitê do Rio do Peixe e com a GERED. Na primeira etapa do projeto foram ofertadas atividades a duas turmas do 6° ano da Escola de Educação Básica Maura de Senna Pereira de Pinheiro Preto e ao 6° ano da Escola de Educação Básica Esther Crema Marmentini de Videira. O projeto é divido em cinco módulos, sendo no Módulo III abordado o tema Saneamento Básico, cuja aulas foram ministradas pela professora Carla Suntti com auxílio dos acadêmicos voluntários: Dara Miranda, Arthur Alfredo Seidel e Crislaine Campos Maccari. Neste módulo os estudantes conheceram a história “Vida de Esgoto” e puderam compreender como o esgoto é formado, além dos problemas causados pelo lançamento do esgoto sem tratamento em corpos d’água. Durante a aula foi apresentado como funciona o tratamento do esgoto nas nossas moradias e a responsabilidade de cada cidadão. Para finalizar a aula, falou-se da importância da higienização das mãos por meio de uma atividade lúdica, enfatizando sempre a necessidade da lavação das mãos antes e depois de irem ao banheiro. Com essa atividade foi possível sensibilizar os estudantes sobre o cuidado com a higiene pessoal, bem como a importância do saneamento básico no nosso dia a dia

Interrelation between rifting, faulting, sedimentation, and mantle serpentinization during continental margin formation-including examples from the Norwegian Sea

The conditions permitting mantle serpentinization during continental rifting are explored within 2-D thermotectonostratigraphic basin models, which track the rheological evolution of the continental crust, account for sediment blanketing effects, and allow for kinetically controlled mantle serpentinization processes. The basic idea is that the entire extending continental crust has to be brittle for crustal scale faulting and mantle serpentinization to occur. The isostatic and latent heat effects of the reaction are fully coupled to the structural and thermal solutions. A systematic parameter study shows that a critical stretching factor exists for which complete crustal embrittlement and serpentinization occurs. Increased sedimentation rates shift this critical stretching factor to higher values as sediment blanketing effects result in higher crustal temperatures. Sediment supply has therefore, through the temperature-dependence of the viscous flow laws, strong control on crustal strength and mantle serpentinization reactions are only likely when sedimentation rates are low and stretching factors high. In a case study for the Norwegian margin, we test whether the inner lower crustal bodies (LCB) imaged beneath the Møre and Vøring margin could be serpentinized mantle. Multiple 2-D transects have been reconstructed through the 3-D data set by Scheck-Wenderoth and Maystrenko (2011). We find that serpentinization reactions are possible and likely during the Jurassic rift phase. Predicted thicknesses and locations of partially serpentinized mantle rocks fit to information on LCBs from seismic and gravity data. We conclude that some of the inner LCBs beneath the Norwegian margin may be partially serpentinized mantle

Distinct Regulation of Host Responses by ERK and JNK MAP Kinases in Swine Macrophages Infected with Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 Influenza Virus

Swine influenza is an acute respiratory disease in pigs caused by swine influenza virus (SIV). Highly virulent SIV strains cause mortality of up to 10%. Importantly, pigs have long been considered “mixing vessels” that generate novel influenza viruses with pandemic potential, a constant threat to public health. Since its emergence in 2009 and subsequent pandemic spread, the pandemic (H1N1) 2009 (H1N1pdm) has been detected in pig farms, creating the risk of generating new reassortants and their possible infection of humans. Pathogenesis in SIV or H1N1pdm-infected pigs remains poorly characterized. Proinflammatory and antiviral cytokine responses are considered correlated with the intensity of clinical signs, and swine macrophages are found to be indispensible in effective clearance of SIV from pig lungs. In this study, we report a unique pattern of cytokine responses in swine macrophages infected with H1N1pdm. The roles of mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases in the regulation of the host responses were examined. We found that proinflammatory cytokines IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and TNF-α were significantly induced and their induction was ERK1/2-dependent. IFN-β and IFN-inducible antiviral Mx and 2′5′-OAS were sharply induced, but the inductions were effectively abolished when ERK1/2 was inhibited. Induction of CCL5 (RANTES) was completely inhibited by inhibitors of ERK1/2 and JNK1/2, which appeared also to regulate FasL and TNF-α, critical for apoptosis in pig macrophages. We found that NFκB was activated in H1N1pdm-infected cells, but the activation was suppressed when ERK1/2 was inhibited, indicating there is cross-talk between MAP kinase and NFκB responses in pig macrophages. Our data suggest that MAP kinase may activate NFκB through the induction of RIG-1, which leads to the induction of IFN-β in swine macrophages. Understanding host responses and their underlying mechanisms may help identify venues for effective control of SIV and assist in prevention of future influenza pandemics
