Epitaxial strain and the magnetic properties of canted antiferromagnetic perovskite NaNiF3 thin films
The perovskite crystal structure is known to exhibit a multitude of interesting physical phenomena owing to the intricate coupling of the electronic and magnetic properties to the structure. Fluoroperovskites offer an alternative chemistry to the much more widely studied oxide materials, which may prove advantageous for applications. It is demonstrated here for the first time that the antiferromagnetic perovskite fluoride, NaNiF3, can be synthesized in thin film form. The films were grown via molecular beam epitaxy on SrTiO3 (100) substrates to produce high quality epitaxial films in the thickness range of 5-50 nm. The Pnma structure of the films was confirmed by x-ray diffraction. There was a decrease in the out-of-plane lattice spacing from the bulk value corresponding to a maximum strain of 1.7% in the thinnest film. Canted antiferromagnetism was measured in all films using magnetometry and a negative change in the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of ΔTN = - 9.1 ± 0.7 K was observed with increasing strain
Hexagonal Tilings: Tutte Uniqueness
We develop the necessary machinery in order to prove that hexagonal tilings
are uniquely determined by their Tutte polynomial, showing as an example how to

Hexagonal Tilings and Locally C6 Graphs
We give a complete classification of hexagonal tilings and locally C6 graphs,
by showing that each of them has a natural embedding in the torus or in the
Klein bottle. We also show that locally grid graphs are minors of hexagonal
tilings (and by duality of locally C6 graphs) by contraction of a perfect
matching and deletion of the resulting parallel edges, in a form suitable for
the study of their Tutte uniqueness.Comment: 14 figure
Rotation curves and metallicity gradients from HII regions in spiral galaxies
In this paper we study long slit spectra in the region of H emission
line of a sample of 111 spiral galaxies with recognizable and well defined
spiral morphology and with a well determined environmental status, ranging from
isolation to non-disruptive interaction with satellites or companions. The form
and properties of the rotation curves are considered as a function of the
isolation degree, morphological type and luminosity. The line ratios are used
to estimate the metallicity of all the detected HII regions, thus producing a
composite metallicity profile for different types of spirals. We have found
that isolated galaxies tend to be of later types and lower luminosity than the
interacting galaxies. The outer parts of the rotation curves of isolated
galaxies tend to be flatter than in interacting galaxies, but they show similar
relations between global parameters. The scatter of the Tully-Fisher relation
defined by isolated galaxies is significantly lower than that of interacting
galaxies. The [NII]/H ratios, used as metallicity indicator, show a
clear trend between Z and morphological type, t, with earlier spirals showing
larger ratios; this trend is tighter when instead of t the gradient of the
inner rotation curve, G, is used; no trend is found with the interaction
status. The Z-gradient of the disks depends on the type, being almost flat for
early spirals, and increasing for later types. The [NII]/H ratios
measured for disk HII regions of interacting galaxies are higher than for
normal/isolated objects, even if all the galaxy families present similar

Tunable BODIPY derivatives amenable to "click" and peptide chemistry
Novel azido- and amino- functionalised fluorescent probes based on the BODIPY framework have been developed. The probes can be easily and cheaply synthesised, exhibit the highly desirable BODIPY fluorescent properties, and are amenable to “click” and peptide chemistry methodologies. These probes provide a stable and readily available tool amenable for the visualisation of both solution and solid supported events
Literacies of the Heart and Antiracist Pedagogy
Challenging structural violence is a major project of our time. The massive Black Lives Matter (BLM) uprisings of Summer 2020 brought greater awareness of the systemic racism of universities and a commitment to challenge it. A Marxist-humanist lens recognizes racism as foundational to the racial-colonial capitalist patriarchy and the university as deeply implicated in the development and maintenance of these structures. While all these interlocking oppressions must be eradicated, in the US, racism has historically galvanized more people to action. For this we need a populace with critical literacy to connect their daily oppressions to structural forces. Critical literacy also encourages us to listen to the Oppressed whose “Reason and force” may prove useful toward our liberation. A critical literacy of the heart, drawing of Paulo Freire, is one that challenges us to transform structures of oppression through humanizing antiracist pedagogy. The bulk of the paper is drawn from a duoethnography of two Latina instructors. The stories shared offer insights into the deep-seeded racist policies and practices in education and the complexity of challenging these. We argue that such complexity calls for an intentional antiracist pedagogy of “other doing” that goes against the “commonsense” of our society
