Remote sensing applications to hydrologic modeling
An energy balance snowmelt model for rugged terrain was devised and coupled to a flow model. A literature review of remote sensing applications to hydrologic modeling was included along with a software development outline
Uncomputably noisy ergodic limits
V'yugin has shown that there are a computable shift-invariant measure on
Cantor space and a simple function f such that there is no computable bound on
the rate of convergence of the ergodic averages A_n f. Here it is shown that in
fact one can construct an example with the property that there is no computable
bound on the complexity of the limit; that is, there is no computable bound on
how complex a simple function needs to be to approximate the limit to within a
given epsilon
Learning and digital inclusion: the ELAMP project
The Electronic Learning and Mobility Project (ELAMP) was a nationally funded project by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, which ran from 2004 to 2010. The main aim of ELAMP was to improve the education of Traveller children, particularly highly mobile learners. ELAMP focussed upon the use of mobile technology and distance learning to support, enhance and extend young Travellers’ educational and vocational opportunities. This article will reflect upon the learning and technological experiences and opportunities that the ELAMP project provided for Traveller children, young people and their families. In doing so it will critically consider the value of information technology in working with Traveller communities and advancing their educational opportunities. Reviewing ELAMP work will also demonstrate how the use of mobile technology can improve educational outcomes and Traveller families’ digital inclusion. Now that the project has ended, this article will question why we are not using what we learnt from ELAMP to move forward
Surface-reconstructed Icosahedral Structures for Lead Clusters
We describe a new family of icosahedral structures for lead clusters. In
general, structures in this family contain a Mackay icosahedral core with a
reconstructed two-shell outer-layer. This family includes the anti-Mackay
icosahedra, which have have a Mackay icosahedral core but with most of the
surface atoms in hexagonal close-packed positions. Using a many-body glue
potential for lead, we identify two icosahedral structures in this family which
have the lowest energies of any known structure in the size range from 900 to
15000 lead atoms. We show that these structures are stabilized by a feature of
the many-body glue part of the interatomic potential.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
Isotopic dependence of the giant monopole resonance in the even-A ^{112-124}Sn isotopes and the asymmetry term in nuclear incompressibility
The strength distributions of the giant monopole resonance (GMR) have been
measured in the even-A Sn isotopes (A=112--124) with inelastic scattering of
400-MeV particles in the angular range
--. We find that the experimentally-observed GMR energies
of the Sn isotopes are lower than the values predicted by theoretical
calculations that reproduce the GMR energies in Pb and Zr very
well. From the GMR data, a value of MeV is obtained
for the asymmetry-term in the nuclear incompressibility.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Letters. 10 pages; 4 figure
Atomic-scale structure of the SrTiO3(001)-c(6x2) reconstruction: Experiments and first-principles calculations
The c(6x2) is a reconstruction of the SrTiO3(001) surface that is formed
between 1050-1100oC in oxidizing annealing conditions. This work proposes a
model for the atomic structure for the c(6x2) obtained through a combination of
results from transmission electron diffraction, surface x-ray diffraction,
direct methods analysis, computational combinational screening, and density
functional theory. As it is formed at high temperatures, the surface is complex
and can be described as a short-range ordered phase featuring microscopic
domains composed of four main structural motifs. Additionally, non-periodic
TiO2 units are present on the surface. Simulated scanning tunneling microscopy
images based on the electronic structure calculations are consistent with
experimental images
