A Producer's Propensity to Conserve Framework: Application to a US and Australian Conservation Program
Increasing recognition of the environmental impact of agriculture has led to increasing public activity around the world encouraging public conservation programs. Different countries have taken different program approaches to accomplish this. The comparison and contrast here is between Australia and the United States, examining the CREP program in the U.S. and the Eco Tender program in Australia. A different historical experience in the U.S. sets certain parameters that are expected in their conservation programs. To some extent, the Australian program could take more of a clean slate approach. The Australian program is able to take a broader landscape approach, specifically considering multiple benefits with knowledge about off-site benefits as well. This is tied into a structured auction process that does not allow gaming of the auction process. While the U.S. approach does include a bidding process, its structure is such that it has characteristics of an incentive program. The U.S. approach also gives less incentive to farmers to provide environmental amenities at the lowest possible cost. Taking off-site impacts into consideration and finding ways to induce competition among farmers to provide amenities at the lowest cost to the public are seen as important characteristics of cost effective conservation programs.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,
Effects of Ocean Acidification and Warming on the mitochondrial physiology of Atlantic cod
The Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) is an economically important marine fish species exploited by both fishery and aquaculture, especially in the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans. Ongoing climate changes are happening faster in the high latitude oceans with a higher increase of temperature and a steeper decrease in water pH due to anthropogenic CO2 than in the temperate regions threatening the existence of the Atlantic cod in the areas of its maximum exploitation. In this study, we investigated the mitochondrial physiology of two life-stages of cod under the sea water temperatures and pCO2 conditions forecasted for the year 2100 in the North Atlantic (+ 5 °C, 1000 μatm CO2). In embryos, the metabolism during development showed to be sensitive to rising temperatures with a general increase in respiratory activity until 9 °C (5 °C over the natural range) and a drop in activity at 12 °C mainly caused by a dramatic decrease in Complex I activity, which was not compensated by Complex II. In the adults, already well known for their metabolic plasticity, mitochondria from liver and heart are not affected by either increasing temperature or pCO2. However, in heart mitochondria of animals that were reared under warm hypercapnia (10 °C + 1000 μatm CO2), we found OXPHOS to exploit already 100% of the ETS capacity. This suggests that a further increase in temperature or pCO2 might lead to a mismatch in the ATP demand/production and consequently decrease heart performances. The different mitochondrial plasticities of the two life-stages reflect the sensitivity range at population level and thus can provide a more realistic reading frame of the potential survival of the North Atlantic cod population under climate change

For localized PCa, gene expression assays can support clinical decisions regarding active surveillance and adjuvant treatment. In metastatic PCa, homologous recombination deficiency, microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H), and CDK12 deficiency constitute main actionable alterations. Alterations in DNA repair genes confer variable sensitivities to poly(ADP-ribose)polymerase inhibitors, and the use of genomic instability assays as predictive biomarker is still incipient. Tolerance of Hyas araneus zoea I larvae to elevated seawater PCO2 despite elevated metabolic costs
Early life stages of marine crustaceans respond sensitively to elevated seawater P CO 2 . However, the underlying physiological mechanisms have not been studied well. We therefore investigated the effects of elevated seawater P CO 2 on oxygen consumption, dry weight, elemental composition, median developmental time (MDT) and mortality in zoea I larvae of the spider crab Hyas araneus (Svalbard 79°N/11°E; collection, May 2009; hatch, December 2009). At the time of moulting, oxygen consumption rate had reached a steady state level under control conditions. In contrast, elevated seawater P CO 2 caused the metabolic rate to rise continuously leading to a maximum 1.5-fold increase beyond control level a few days before moulting into the second stage (zoea II), followed by a pronounced decrease. Dry weight of larvae reared under high CO 2 conditions was lower than in control larvae at the beginning of the moult cycle, yet this difference had disappeared at the time of moulting. MDT of zoea I varied between 45 ± 1 days under control conditions and 42 ± 2 days under the highest seawater CO 2 concentration. The present study indicates that larval development under elevated seawater P CO 2 levels results in higher metabolic costs during premoulting events in zoea I. However, H. araneus zoea I larvae seem to be able to compensate for higher metabolic costs as larval MDT and survival was not affected by elevated P CO 2 leve
Effect of Television Programming and Advertising on Alcohol Consumption in Normal Drinkers
The drinking behavior of 96 male normal drinking college students was assessed after they viewed a videotape of a popular prime-time television program complete with advertisements. Different versions of the videotape were used to evaluate the effects of a television program with and without alcohol scenes as crossed with the effects of three different types of advertisements (i.e., beer, nonalcoholic beverages and food). After viewing the videotape, the subjects, who were led to believe that they were participating in two separate and unrelated sets of experimental procedures, were asked to perform a taste rating of light beers, which actually provided an unobtrusive measure of their alcohol consumption. The results provided no support for the widely held assumption that drinking scenes in television programs or televised advertisements for alcoholic beverages precipitate increased drinking by viewers. This finding, however, must be considered in the context of the laboratory setting of the study, and thus may not generalize to real-life television viewing. Further research in this area is clearly needed, including an evaluation of the effects of television program content and advertisements on other populations (e.g., alcohol abusers)
