The Common Core State Standards\u27 Mathematical Practices: What do They Mean for the Adventist Mathematics Classroom?

    Get PDF
A nationwide state-sponsored curriculum for mathematics and language arts will soon be implemented in public schools across the United States. This will also include a new system for assessing students’ mastery of the curriculum. The main focus of this article is what mathematics teachers will need to do to adapt their instruction because of the coming changes

Katharine Susannah Prichard\u27s Coonardoo : an historical study

    Get PDF
The focus of this thesis is Katharine Susannah Prichard\u27s novel, Coonardoo ( 1929), and its capacity to provide a framework for the reconstruction of the historical situation in the North-West region of Western Australia during the period mid-1860s to late 1920s. The thesis has a dual purpose: to contextualise the novel in terms of the historical, political, ideological, and social situation; and to read the novel in ways which reveal its reconstruction of the wider historical context. My approach is a new historicist close reading of the text. Specific events or situations are scrutinised for their power to convey insights into the extra-textual situation. For example, the textualisation of the relationship between the white hero and the Aboriginal heroine leads to an exploration of attitudes to interracial sexual encounters in the period of the novel and in the author\u27s contemporary milieu. Included in this work is an exposition of the various industries which contributed substantially to the economic development of the North-West region. These are treated in some depth in relation to their historical circumstances but with particular reference to textual events and situations. An important area of discussion is the social and economic situation which developed between the European settlers in the North-West and the indigenous population of the region. Particular reference is made to the displacement, subjugation and diaspora of the region\u27s Aboriginal population. The pre-contact cultural and religious practices of the Aborigines of the North-West region, and the extent to which these patterns survived into the author\u27s contemporary period, is investigated in the thesis. An appraisal is made of the author\u27s claim that during her visit to the North-West in 1926, she directly observed the Aboriginal traditional forms represented in Coonardoo. Prichard\u27s own socio-cultural and ideological position is explored in relation to the Aboriginal dimension in the novel. Especially relevant is the author\u27s adherence to the theory of Social Darwinism and to the view, prevalent in her society, that the extinction of the Aborigines was imminent and inevitable. Prichard\u27s novel is the starting point of an investigation into the social, economic and political background of the North-West region during the first sixty years of white settlement. The task of this thesis is to \u27recover\u27 the wider historical situation by reference to documents, journals, memoirs and newspapers of the period

Feshbach resonances in Cesium at Ultra-low Static Magnetic Fields

    Get PDF
We have observed Feshbach resonances for 133Cs atoms in two different hyperfine states at ultra-low static magnetic fields by using an atomic fountain clock. The extreme sensitivity of our setup allows for high signal-to-noise-ratio observations at densities of only 2*10^7 cm^{-3}. We have reproduced these resonances using coupled-channels calculations which are in excellent agreement with our measurements. We justify that these are s-wave resonances involving weakly-bound states of the triplet molecular Hamiltonian, identify the resonant closed channels, and explain the observed multi-peak structure. We also describe a model which precisely accounts for the collisional processes in the fountain and which explains the asymmetric shape of the observed Feshbach resonances in the regime where the kinetic energy dominates over the coupling strength.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl

    Plum Curculio (Conotrachelus nenuphar)

    Get PDF
Plum curculio is a brown weevil (beetle with a snout) native to eastern North America, where it is a major pest of pome and stone fruits. It was detected in Box Elder County, Utah, in the early 1980s, and this population remains the only known infestation in western North America, where it is occasionally found in residential and wild fruit trees. Plum curculio is a quarantine pest in western North America (U.S. and Canada), and fruit grown in infested counties is restricted from being exported. Thus, it is a threat to Utah’s fruit industry and requires ongoing monitoring and management to keep Utah’s fruit export markets open

    "Quantum Interference with Slits" Revisited

Marcella [arXiv:quant-ph/0703126] has presented a straightforward technique employing the Dirac formalism to calculate single- and double-slit interference patterns. He claims that no reference is made to classical optics or scattering theory and that his method therefore provides a purely quantum mechanical description of these experiments. He also presents his calculation as if no approximations are employed. We show that he implicitly makes the same approximations found in classical treatments of interference and that no new physics has been introduced. At the same time, some of the quantum mechanical arguments Marcella gives are, at best, misleading.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

Near-IR studies of recurrent nova V745 Scorpii during its 2014 outburst

The recurrent nova (RN) V745 Scorpii underwent its third known outburst on 2014 February 6. Infrared monitoring of the eruption on an almost daily basis, starting from 1.3d after discovery, shows the emergence of a powerful blast wave generated by the high velocity nova ejecta exceeding 4000 kms−1^{-1} plowing into its surrounding environment. The temperature of the shocked gas is raised to a high value exceeding 108^{8}K immediately after outburst commencement. The energetics of the outburst clearly surpass those of similar symbiotic systems like RS Oph and V407 Cyg which have giant secondaries. The shock does not show a free-expansion stage but rather shows a decelerative Sedov-Taylor phase from the beginning. Such strong shockfronts are known to be sites for γ\gamma ray generation. V745 Sco is the latest nova, apart from five other known novae, to show γ\gamma ray emission. It may be an important testbed to resolve the crucial question whether all novae are generically γ\gamma ray emitters by virtue of having a circumbinary reservoir of material that is shocked by the ejecta rather than γ\gamma ray generation being restricted to only symbiotic systems with a shocked red giant (RG) wind. The lack of a free-expansion stage favors V745 Sco to have a density enhancement around the white dwarf (WD), above that contributed by a RG wind. Our analysis also suggests that the WD in V745 Sco is very massive and a potential progenitor for a future SN Ia explosion.Comment: To appear in ApJ (Letters

Low-latency analysis pipeline for compact binary coalescences in the advanced gravitational wave detector era

The multi-band template analysis (MBTA) pipeline is a low-latency coincident analysis pipeline for the detection of gravitational waves (GWs) from compact binary coalescences. MBTA runs with a low computational cost, and can identify candidate GW events online with a sub-minute latency. The low computational running cost of MBTA also makes it useful for data quality studies. Events detected by MBTA online can be used to alert astronomical partners for electromagnetic follow-up. We outline the current status of MBTA and give details of recent pipeline upgrades and validation tests that were performed in preparation for the first advanced detector observing period. The MBTA pipeline is ready for the outset of the advanced detector era and the exciting prospects it will bring.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figure
