    Research on health-related work absenteeism focuses primarily on moral hazard issues but seldom discriminates between the types of illnesses that prompt workers to stay home or seek care. This paper focuses on chronic migraine, a common and acute illness that can prove to be relatively debilitating. Our analysis is based upon the absenteeism of workers employed in a large Fortune-100 manufacturing firm in the United States. We model their daily transitions between work and absence spells between January 1996 up until December 1998. Only absences due to migraine and depression, its main comorbidity, are taken into account. Our results show that there is considerable correlation between the different states we consider. In addition, workers who are covered by the Blue Preferred Provided Organization tend to have shorter employment spells but also shorter migraine spells.migraine, absenteeism, insurance policies, transition models, unobserved heterogeneity

    LES REGROUPEMENTS MUNICIPAUX AU QUÉBEC ET LEUR INCIDENCE SUR LA MASSE SALARIALE DES MUNICIPALITÉS : 1992-2000

    This study estimates the impact of the municipal groupings between 1992 and 2000 upon municipalities's wage bill in Quebec. Our identification strategy is based on a wage bill reduced form model and the specification of the grouping participation process. The three following methods are used in order to estimate the impact and validate the robustness of the results : fixed effect model, difference in differences estimator with matching on the propensity score and Heckman's treatment parameters estimation method based on sample selection model. The first two estimators were used in a recent study concerning the effects of the groupings upon the fiscal burden and the monetary value of residential properties. Only the smallest municipalities (cantons and parishes) regrouped between 1998 and 2000 had their wage bill increased by 25,0% to 33,0%. Before 1998, the groupings had no incidence on the wage bill of these municipalities and can have reduced that of the cities and the villages. An additional analysis indicates that impacts were significantly important in certain subgroups of regrouped municipalities. About quarter of municipalities regrouped between 1992 and 2000 benefited from a 17,4% average reduction of their wage bill. On the other hand, a 21,0% increase has been observed for an identical proportion of municipalities. RĂ©sumĂ© Cette Ă©tude vise Ă  estimer l'impact des regroupements municipaux survenus entre 1992 et 2000 sur la masse salariale des municipalitĂ©s au QuĂ©bec. Nous appuyons notre dĂ©marche empirique sur un modĂšle Ă©conomique gĂ©nĂ©ral de dĂ©termination de la masse salariale et du processus de participation Ă  un regroupement. L'approche mĂ©thodologique exploite les modĂšles Ă  effet fixe, l’estimateur diffĂ©rence de diffĂ©rences par la mĂ©thode d’appariement sur les scores de propension et la mĂ©thode d'Heckman en coupe transversale. Les deux premiers estimateurs ont Ă©tĂ© utilisĂ©s dans une Ă©tude rĂ©cente qui Ă©valuait les effets des regroupements sur le fardeau fiscal et la valeur marchande des propriĂ©tĂ©s rĂ©sidentielles. Seuls les cantons, les paroisses ainsi que les municipalitĂ©s sans dĂ©signation regroupĂ©s entre 1998 et 2000 ont Ă©tĂ© touchĂ©s par des hausses approximatives de 25,0 % Ă  33,0 % de leur masse salariale par habitant. Avant 1998, les regroupements ont Ă©tĂ© sans incidence sur la masse salariale de ces municipalitĂ©s et peuvent avoir rĂ©duit celle des villes et des villages. Une analyse complĂ©mentaire indique que les impacts ont Ă©tĂ© significativement importants dans certains sous-groupes de municipalitĂ©s regroupĂ©es. Environ le quart des municipalitĂ©s regroupĂ©es entre 1992 et 2000 ont bĂ©nĂ©ficiĂ© d'une rĂ©duction moyenne de 17,4 % de leur masse salariale par habitant.     L'impact des pratiques relationnelles au travail sur la reconnaissance : le cas de l'industrie québécoise du jeu vidéo

    Les changements qui affectent les milieux de travail modernes ont des consĂ©quences lourdes pour les travailleurs: compĂ©tition entre les collĂšgues, effritement du collectif de travail, perte de sens du travail. Il en rĂ©sulte plusieurs malaises psychologiques, un manque de reconnaissance entre les travailleurs et un manque de reconnaissance de la part de la direction (verticale). Au mĂȘme moment, il est possible d'observer des entreprises qui mettent en place des pratiques de gestion des ressources humaines innovatrices et apprĂ©ciĂ©es des employĂ©s. Ces \ud « pratiques relationnelles en milieu de travail » ont gĂ©nĂ©ralement pour objectif de crĂ©er un environnement de travail plus agrĂ©able, moins stressant et favorisant le plaisir au travail. Elles introduisent des aspects de subjectivitĂ© au travail dont les contours demeurent Ă  explorer. Cette recherche vise Ă  comprendre les impacts de ces pratiques relationnelles en milieu de travail sur les dimensions que sont la reconnaissance horizontale et verticale. De plus, elle s'attarde aux raisons d'implantation, par les employeurs, de telles pratiques et elle dĂ©sire comprendre la perception des employĂ©s au sujet de ces pratiques. Les pratiques relationnelles en milieu de travail seront considĂ©rĂ©es comme Ă©tant des innovations organisationnelles au travail. Cette recherche s'inscrit dans une dĂ©marche qualitative utilisant la grounded theory (thĂ©orisation ancrĂ©e) et l'interactionnisme symbolique. À partir d'entrevues semi-dirigĂ©es conduites auprĂšs de dix-huit employĂ©s et huit gestionnaires de quatre entreprises, nous dĂ©gagerons des rĂ©ponses permettant de mieux comprendre la question de recherche. Cette Ă©tude prendra place au sein d'entreprises du secteur des jeux vidĂ©o, ce dernier Ă©tant reconnu pour son dynamisme et son ambiance dĂ©contractĂ©e. Les rĂ©sultats obtenus dĂ©montrent qu'il y a un lien, dans l'industrie du jeu vidĂ©o, entre les pratiques relationnelles et la reconnaissance. Par contre, ce lien n'est pas direct. Les pratiques relationnelles sont un Ă©lĂ©ment favorisant un climat de travail agrĂ©able, la communication, les bonnes relations interpersonnelles et la reconnaissance.
