The cooling, mass and radius of the neutron star in EXO 0748-676 in quiescence with XMM-Newton

We analyse four XMM-Newton observations of the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary EXO 0748$-$676 in quiescence. We fit the spectra with an absorbed neutron-star atmosphere model, without the need for a high-energy (power-law) component; with a 95 per cent confidence the power-law contributes less than 1 per cent to the total flux of the source in $0.5-10.0$ keV. The fits show significant residuals at around 0.5 keV which can be explained by either a hot gas component around the neutron star or a moderately broad emission line from a residual accretion disc. The temperature of the neutron-star has decreased significantly compared to the previous observation, from 124 eV to 105 eV, with the cooling curve being consistent with either an exponential decay plus a constant or a (broken) power law. The best-fitting neutron-star mass and radius can be better constrained if we extend the fits down to the lowest possible energy available. For an assumed distance of 7.1 kpc, the best-fitting neutron-star mass and radius are $2.00_{-0.24}^{+0.07}~M_\odot$ and $11.3_{-1.0}^{+1.3}$ km if we fit the spectrum over the $0.3-10$ keV range, but $1.50_{-1.0}^{+0.4}~M_\odot$ and $12.2_{-3.6}^{+0.8}$ km if we restrict the fits to the $0.5-10$ keV range. We finally discuss the effect of the assumed distance to the source upon the best-fitting neutron-star mass and radius. As systematic uncertainties in the deduced mass and radius depending on the distance are much larger than the statistical errors, it would be disingenuous to take these results at face value.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure

Archival Resistance: A Comparative Reading of Ulysses and One Hundred Years of Solitude

Much of the comparative scholarship on the works of Gabriel García Márquez assumes the position that he was most significantly influenced by the works of William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway. However, beyond the citation of techniques shared extensively by other Modernists and dependence upon superficial comparisons between texts, the connections between García Márquez and these writers frequently remain tenuous. I suggest that to privilege Faulknerian or Hemingwayan readings of García Márquez is to overlook his position as a postcolonial Latin American novelist; I therefore consider in relationship with García Márquez the Irish writer James Joyce. Both writers participate in what I call archival resistance, constructing in Ulysses and One Hundred Years of Solitude a depository of images and scenes relating the experiences of life in Ireland or Latin America, respectively. The presence of colonialism in both Ireland and Latin America has historically impeded their ability to create narratives through which their own identities may be expressed, subordinated instead to overarching imperialist chronicles. I argue that it is in this shared resistance that an extensive ideological relationship—if not direct influence—is revealed between James Joyce and Gabriel García Márquez

La légendaire beauté espagnole à l'épreuve de l'idéal

L'anthropologue Mary Douglas assure que chaque institution doit reposer sur une métaphore naturalisée comme un principe constitutif, en mesure de fournir l'apparence de la réalité aux conventions sociales afin de leur accorder un certificat de naturalisation qui les fait incontestables et évidentes. Cette naturalisation a été appliqué à la nation espagnole en s'appuyant sur le corps féminin, en résultant en un stéréotype de beauté mêlant d’une façon delibérament confuse des clichés sur la femme, l’espagnol, l’andalou et le gitan. Nous sommes intéressés à révéler les mécanismes de production de cette image, le traçant dans divers exemples de l'art et la publicité du XXème siècle. En partant de la réflexion de Bourdieu : que les images de l’autre ne sont pas un reflet de la réalité, mais de les préoccupations de ceux qui produisent et consomment ces images, nous tenterons ici de clarifier l’autoportrait –en négatif- du producteur de l’image de la « véritable » beauté espagnole. Notre proposition est bien, plus précisément, une déconstruction des processus de production et de réception de l'image de la beauté de la femme espagnole en analysant trois exemples: sa création et manipulation dans la peinture du peintre Romero de Torres comme un paradigme de l’invention de la femme espagnole) ; des images de tourisme qui utilisent surtout l'image du corps féminin; et enfin, nous allons discuter la façon de démasquer la mystification soulevée dans lóuvre des certains artistes espagnoles dans l'actualitéUniversidad de Málaga. Factores de influencia en la expedición de la nueva regulación anticontrabando de 2015 en Colombia

El contrabando ha sido una problemática que ha venido en ascenso en Colombia, debido a ello el presente trabajo pretende explicar algunos de los factores que influenciaron la expedición de una nueva regulación anti-contrabando en Colombia, Ley 1762 de 2015. Ya que fue solamente durante el segundo periodo de Juan Manuel Santos que se generó en el país un rompimiento en la estructura misma de la lucha contra este crimen trasnacional, debido a la aparición de nuevos factores que alteraron el escenario nacional e internacional de la lucha contra el contrabando, permitiendo en Colombia la expedición de la nueva regulación anti-contrabando. El tipo de investigación que se desarrolló fue cualitativa, basada en Colombia como su única unidad de análisis, resultados obtenidos a partir de la metodología de recopilación documental.Illicit trade has been a growing problem in Colombia. The following work will explain some of the factors that influenced the passing of the anti-smuggling law in Colombia, law 1762 from 2015.It was only during the second part of Juan Manuel Santos that a break in the structure of the struggle against this transnational crime came about. This was due to the appearance of new factors that altered the national and international landscapes in the fight againts smuggling allowing the passing of the new regulation. The type of research carried out was qualitative, having Colombia as its only unit of analysis with the results obtained from the documented methodolog

Transformational Leadership Practices and Student Achievement in Diverse Urban Elementary Schools

The relationship between transformational leadership and student academic achievement in diverse urban elementary schools is under-researched. However, studies have indicated that there are no evident gains in student achievement when administrators and teachers differ on views of effective leadership practices. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship between teachers\u27 perceptions of administrator leadership practices and student achievement in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics within diverse elementary schools. Burns\u27s seminal theory on transformational leadership was the theoretical framework for this study. The research questions were designed to explore the relationship between teachers\u27 perceived rating of transformational leadership practices of administrators and student academic achievement in ELA and mathematics. The study was a secondary analysis of publicly available data from 595 elementary schools surveyed by the New York City Department of Education. Two one-way analysis of variance were conducted. From the data, a post hoc test was conducted that determined significant differences between teacher ratings of administrators and student achievement levels in ELA and mathematics. The results indicated the higher the transformational leadership score of administrators, the greater the student academic achievement level. This study may influence district superintendents to offer professional development to administrators, to participate in intervisitation between higher achieving schools and lower achieving schools, and to have administrators mentor one another in cohorts. Positive social change may result by assisting and guiding administrators to use effective transformational leadership practices to improve school climate, trust, and job satisfaction

Las familias interculturales como ejemplo de nuevas formas familiares en un mundo globalizado: análisis de algunos factores de riesgo y de protección

Como consecuencia de la consolidación del proceso migratorio, se han ido configurando, paulatinamente, nuevos núcleos familiares: las familias interculturales o mixtas, compuestas por un miembro autóctono y otro extranjero. Las familias interculturales representan un importante laboratorio para comprender las dinámicas sociales y emocionales que caracterizan una sociedad multicultural. Pero también, muy a menudo tienen que enfrentarse a situaciones de discriminación, falta de apoyo social y a otras formas de presiones sociales que contribuyen a la ruptura marital. Aunque se trata de un tipo de familias cada vez más numerosa, (alrededor de un 14,4% del total de los matrimonios celebrados), las investigaciones y las intervenciones con estas parejas son muy escasas. El objetivo de la presente investigación es determinar la capacidad predictiva di determinadas variables psicosociales y relacionales sobre la satisfacción marital de sus miembros, y por lo tanto el principal factor de protección contra las rupturas maritales. Por ello, se utilizó el modelo ecológico de Bronfenbrenner para explicar el fenomeno. Participaron 130 parejas mixtas residentes en España que contestaron un cuestionario autoadministrado que consta de escalas estandarizadas. Coherentemente con el modelo propuesto, el mantenimiento de la identidad cultural, el apoyo social recibido, la integración comunitaria y una gestión de las diferencias culturales basadas en la valorización de la doble cultura, son los principales factores de protección sobre estabilidad de las parejas. Mientras a medida que aumenta la discriminación percibida y disminuyen las redes de apoyo, la satisfacción familiar desciende. Para mejorar el bienestar de las parejas se ve necesario, de acuerdo con otros autores, la implementación del trabajo en red entre distintas instituciones y sistemas de apoyo informal. Que, desde la multidisciplinaridad y la perspectiva de la investigación acción, puede contribuir a empoderar a las familias mixtas y minimizar, así, las disoluciones matrimoniales.Universidad de Málaga. Las familias interculturales en España: análisis de algunos predictores sociales sobre su satisfacción vital.

Como consecuencia de la consolidación del proceso migratorio, se han ido configurando, paulatinamente, nuevos núcleos familiares: las familias interculturales o mixtas. Se trata de una tipología de pareja cada vez más numerosa que en el 2011 rondaba el 14,4% de los matrimonios celebrados. No obstante, la dimensión del fenómeno en el contexto español, los estudios y, consecuentemente, las intervenciones con estas parejas, son muy escasas. El objetivo de la presente investigación es determinar las principales variables sociales, comunitarias y relacionales, capaces de predecir la satisfacción vital de estas parejas. Se administró un cuestionario a 130 parejas que consta de escalas estandarizadas sobre apoyo social, sentido de comunidad, satisfacción marital, discriminación percibida y satisfacción vital. Se realizaron análisis de regresión para determinar qué variables predicen la satisfacción vital de las parejas mixtas. Coherentemente con otros hallazgos, la satisfacción marital es la principal variable explicativa para ambos miembros (β=.37; p<.001 para los extranjeros y β=.39; p<.001 para los autóctonos), seguida por la discriminación y el apoyo social. Son necesarias otras investigaciones para comprender como estas variables regulan el bienestar subjetivo de estas parejas. Además, es interesante comprender como estas parejas gestionan su diferencia cultural y como estas estrategias afectan la satisfacción marital.Universidad de Málaga.
