    Get PDF

Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) annually cause enormous loss to the producers and their  combat has become a worldwide challenge mainly due to several reports of pesticides resistance. Today, one of the best  alternatives used in this combat is the application of natural insecticides such as neem oil and pyroligneous acid. This study  demonstrates a method to obtain a hexane fraction from sugarcane pyroligneous acid, which can be easily applied, as well as its effectiveness against S. frugiperda. The hexane fraction exhibited LC50 of 2206,41 ppm after 24 h of exposure with a linear dose-response, indicating that the fraction can be used as a bio-insecticide against S. frugiperda. Keywords: Wood vinegar, insecticide, Saccharum officinarum, fall armyworm, pyroligneous extract

Lessons Learned to Improve the UX Practices in Agile Projects Involving Data Science and Process Automation

Context: User-Centered Design and Agile methodologies focus on human issues. Nevertheless, agile methodologies focus on contact with contracting customers and generating value for them. Usually, the communication between end users and the agile team is mediated by customers. However, they do not know the problems end users face in their routines. Hence, UX issues are typically identified only after the implementation, during user testing and validation. Objective: Aiming to improve the understanding and definition of the problem in agile projects, this research investigates the practices and difficulties experienced by agile teams during the development of data science and process automation projects. Also, we analyze the benefits and the teams' perceptions regarding user participation in these projects. Method: We collected data from four agile teams in an academia-industry collaboration focusing on delivering data science and process automation solutions. Therefore, we applied a carefully designed questionnaire answered by developers, scrum masters, and UX designers. In total, 18 subjects answered the questionnaire. Results: From the results, we identify practices used by the teams to define and understand the problem and to represent the solution. The practices most often used are prototypes and meetings with stakeholders. Another practice that helped the team to understand the problem was using Lean Inceptions. Also, our results present some specific issues regarding data science projects. Conclusion: We observed that end-user participation can be critical to understanding and defining the problem. They help to define elements of the domain and barriers in the implementation. We identified a need for approaches that facilitate user-team communication in data science projects and the need for more detailed requirements representations to support data science solutions

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of rosuvastatin on renal injury and inflammation in a model of nitric oxide deficiency. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups (n = 10/group) and treated for 28 days with saline (CTRL); 30 mg/kg/day L-NAME (L-name); L-NAME and 20 mg/kg/day rosuvastatin (L-name+ROS-20); or L-NAME and 2 mg/kg/day rosuvastatin (L-name+ROS-2). Systolic blood pressure was measured by plethysmography in the central artery of the tail. The serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, creatinine, nitric oxide, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor alpha levels were analyzed. Urine samples were taken to measure the albumin: urinary creatinine ratio. Kidneys were sectioned and stained with hematoxylin/eosin and Masson's trichrome. Immunohistochemical analysis of the renal tissue was performed to detect macrophage infiltration of the glomeruli. RESULTS: The systolic blood pressure was elevated in the L-name but not the L-name+rosuvastatin-20 and L-name+rosuvastatin-2 groups. The L-name group had a significantly reduced nitric oxide level and an increased interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha level, albumin: urinary creatinine ratio and number of macrophages in the renal glomeruli. Rosuvastatin increased the nitric oxide level in the L-name+rosuvastatin-2 group and reduced the interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha levels, glomerular macrophage number and albumin:urinary creatinine ratio in the L-name+rosuvastatin-20 and L-name+rosuvastatin-2 groups. CONCLUSION: Rosuvastatin treatment reduced glomerular damage due to improvement in the inflammatory pattern independent of the systolic blood pressure and serum lipid level. These effects may lead to improvements in the treatment of kidney disease

Avaliação diagnóstica em propostas de sequência didática elaboradas por professores de português em formação inicial

    Get PDF
This work is a cut of a broader study concerning the initial formation of teachers of Portuguese mother tongue, with regard to the didactization of textual genres through the procedure “Didactic Sequence”. Here, we deal with the integration of formative evaluation in the teaching-learning of languages, focusing the importance of the diagnostic evaluation for the regulation of the teaching action in the teaching of textual production and in the learning process. To do this, we proceeded to a documentary research, selecting nine proposals of Didactic Sequence (SD) elaborated by undergraduate students in Letters (Portuguese), seeking to highlight the appropriation, on their part, of the formative perspective that the SD procedure proposes.

    Get PDF
Application of geomathematical methods to the analysis of distribution patterns of spatial variables has been common in cartographic studies. Among those methods, one of the simplest and most efficient is the “trend surface analysis”. With the application of that method two patterns of space distribution can be obtained: one of regional nature, represented by the polynomial surface adjusted to the data points, and the other with the local floatations, identifying areas with anomalous values represented by the residues. As an example of application of that methodology, carbon monoxide (CO) was used as a variable, sampled in the urban area of Rio Claro city/SP. That pollutant, when present, influences the environmental conditions in urban areas, and its space distribution, in a significant way as verified in this work. It is, therefore of fundamental importance to guide planning studies in urban health.

Characterizing the potential of the non-conventional yeast Saccharomycodes ludwigii UTAD17 in winemaking

    Get PDF
Non-Saccharomyces yeasts have received increased attention by researchers and winemakers, due to their particular contributions to the characteristics of wine. In this group, Saccharomycodes ludwigii is one of the less studied species. In the present study, a native S. ludwigii strain, UTAD17 isolated from the Douro wine region was characterized for relevant oenological traits. The genome of UTAD17 was recently sequenced. Its potential use in winemaking was further evaluated by conducting grape-juice fermentations, either in single or in mixed-cultures, with Saccharomyces cerevisiae, following two inoculation strategies (simultaneous and sequential). In a pure culture, S. ludwigii UTAD17 was able to ferment all sugars in a reasonable time without impairing the wine quality, producing low levels of acetic acid and ethyl acetate. The overall effects of S. ludwigii UTAD17 in a mixed-culture fermentation were highly dependent on the inoculation strategy which dictated the dominance of each yeast strain. Wines whose fermentation was governed by S. ludwigii UTAD17 presented low levels of secondary aroma compounds and were chemically distinct from those fermented by S. cerevisiae. Based on these results, a future use of this non-Saccharomyces yeast either in monoculture fermentations or as a co-starter culture with S. cerevisiae for the production of wines with greater expression of the grape varietal character and with flavor diversity could be foreseen. Confirmatory factor analysis of the Brief Resilience Scale for Brazilian athletes

    Get PDF
In general studies of resilience, the traumatic events, stressors and risks tend to be events that astonish the person. In the sports setting, it is not always true, since athletes actively seek for challenging situations. e pressure to perform at a high standard, worries about job security and injury, diculties balancing sport and social life commitments, lack of coach feedback, lack of social support in competition and training are some specic stressor in sports settings. The aim of this study was to adapt cross-culturally and examine the psychometric properties of the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) for Brazilian athletes. Following the cross-cultural adaptation of the original English scale, data were collected from 330 athletes (18 - 44 years of age) of both sexes. The original model of the scale was tested, with conrmatory factor analysis, using LISREL software (version 8.51). A satisfactory t for the Brazilian model with one factor and six items was found (χ2 = 18.32, p <.001; RMSEA = .07; GFI = .993; AGFI = .97;, NFI = .979; CFI = .993; NNFI = .986; χ2 /Df = 2.61), replicating the original structure of the scale. Satisfactory evidence of construct validity and internal consistency were also generated through analysis of factor loadings, t-values, Cronbach’s alpha, and construct reliability tests. The BRS appears to be a valid and reliable scale to assess resilience among Brazilian athletes.
