A New Approach for Bounding Awards in Bankruptcy Problems

The solution for the "Contested Garment Problem" proposed in the BabylonicTalmud, one of the most important sources of inspiration for solving situations where demand overcomes supply of some resources, suggests that each agent should receive at least some part of the available amount when facing these situations. Thisidea has been underlied the theoretical analysis of bankruptcy problems from its beginning (O'Neill, 1982) to present day (Dominguez and Thomsom, 2006). In this context, starting from the fact that a society establishes its own set of "Commonly Accepted Equity Principles", we propose a new award bound by providing each agent her minimum amount according to all the admissible bankruptcy rules for such a society. Moreover, we analyze the recursive application of this new bound, since it will not exhaust the resources, in general.Bankruptcy problems, bankruptcy rules, lower bound, recursive process.

Development of passive ultrafast fiber lasers at telecom wavelengths using indium nitride as saturable absorber

This thesis focuses on the research of new technologies for fabrication of passive ultrafast mode-locked fiber lasers, operating at telecom wavelengths (C-band, 1.53-1.57 μm). For this purpose novel saturable absorbers based on indium nitride (InN) are proposed, which have been deposited using molecular beam epitaxy. This material presents unique properties such as direct band gap energy, high thermal and chemical stability, and high radiation hardness. In this thesis, the InN based structures have been completely characterized, being particularly detailed the optical characterization of both the linear and nonlinear behavior. The developed devices have demonstrated high nonlinear optical effects, with modulation depth over 30%. Moreover, they have proved to support over 100 mJ/cm2, with no sign of apparent optical damage, converting them in promising devices for high energy applications. Also, the design and fabrication of laser resonators have been carried out. For this purpose, optical fiber has been used as active medium, besides the InN-based saturable absorbers for achievement of the mode-locking. The developed lasers deliver ultrashort pulses (200-250 fs) with high peak power (over 40 kW). Furthermore, all the lasers using InN based saturable absorbers have exhibited properties such as polarization independence or self-starting operation. For all the experiments that have been performed along this work, InN can be situated as a promising material for application in the design of ultrafast lasers with emission at telecom wavelengths

Abstract Biodegradable starch-glycerol based films were obtained. The influence of lipid compounds (palmitic, stearic and oleic acid), other polymers (hydroxypropylmethylcellulose and sodium caseinate) and bioactive compounds (¿-tocoferol, D-limonene and orange essential oil) on film properties (oxygen and water vapour barrier, optical, mechanical, nano- and microstructural). Furthermore the effect of storage time on films¿ properties was also considered. Fatty acids addition did not improve the water vapour ability of films except for non-stored saturated fatty acids containing films. X-ray diffraction results showed that cristallinity of films increased with storage time, thus increasing the stiffness and decreasing the gloss of films. Furthermore, crystallinity affected the water sorption capacity of films as function of relative humidity and temperature. Glass transition temperature of starch films varied with saturated fatty acids addition. However, oleic acid did not affect this parameter. The presence of fatty acids promoted the formation of V-type structures, thus indicatin the formation of amylose-lipid complexes that inhibited the developmet of other crystalline structures. The effect of the incorporation of other biopolymers to improve the functionality of starch films was also studied. Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) addition inhibited starch retrogradation. However, obtained films were more permeable, specially in case of oxygen. HPMC addition produced phase separation as it was observed by scanning electron microscopy. On the contrary, sodium caseinate incorporation (NaCas) allowed to obtain homogeneous films and less permeable to oxygen. Obtained films showed less mechanical resistance in comparison with pure starch films but a greater flexibility without increasing the water vapour permeability. Rearrangement of polymers chains during storage reduced the mechanical resistance, the extensibility and the gloss of composite films. Regarding the obtained results, the film including a starch:protein ratio of 50:50 was choosen as the film with the most adequate properties. Composite film (starch:Nacas ratio = 50:50) was studied as a matrix for the incorporation o active compounds (¿-tocopherol, D-limonene and orange essential oil). The effect of ¿-tocopherol addition was compared with the incorporation of oleic acid and their mixture. Lipids addition promoted phase separation between starch and NaCas due to the different interactions between each polymer and the lipids. Furthermore, oleic acid addition increased significantly the oxygen permeability whereas ¿-tocopherol greatly improved the antioxidant capacity of films without affecting the oxygen permeability. D-limonene and orange essential oil incorporation was carried out by forming rapeseed and soy nanoliposomes, which acted as carriers of bioactive components. Nanoliposomes incorporation was performed directly in starch-NaCas dispersions without any homogenization, to avoid nanoliposomes damages. Bioactive compounds addition did not confer antimicrobial capacity to the films (except for soy-orange oil nanoliposomes containing film) probably due to the high stability of nanoliposomes and the low antibacterial activity of D-limonene and orange essential oil. Jiménez Marco, A. The main objective of this study was the validation of the Healthy Lifestyle Questionnaire (EVS II), using a confirmatory factorial analysis of the measurement model, with veteran athletes. A total of 348 veteran Portuguese athletes of both genders, aged between 30 and 60 years (M = 41.64, SD = 9.83), of whom 200 were males and 148 were females, from several sports. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis demonstrate the adequacy of the adapted version of the EVS II, as the factorial structure (6 factors/24 items) has acceptable validity indexes: χ2 = 305.925, p = 0.000, df = 120.017, χ2/df = 2.549, NFI (Normed Fit Index) = 0.909, TLI (Tucker Lewis Index) = 0.918, CFI (Comparative Fit Index) = 0.944, GFI (Goodness of Fit Index) = 0.944, AGFI (Adjusted Goodness of Fit Index) = 0.909, SRMR (Standardized Root Mean Square Residual) = 0.048, RMSEA (Root Mean Square of Approximation) = 0.060, allowing evaluation of the dimensions of balanced diet, respect for mealtime, tobacco and alcohol consumption, other drugs consumption and resting habits. The adaptation to sport of the Portuguese version of EVS II can be used with reasonable confidence in the evaluation of healthy lifestyles in the context of sportinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF

Transcontextual model application in the prediction of veteran judo athletes’ life satisfaction

    Get PDF
Background and Study Aim: Despite recognised benefits of regular physical activity for health, the percentage of individuals linking with a physical activity practice sufficient to confer health benefits is low. The aim of current work is knowledge about effects of an extension of the motivation trans-contextual model application, specifically in the prediction of life satisfaction by veteran judo athletes. Material and Methods: It was used a sample of 99 Portuguese veteran judo athletes of both genders, aged between 30 and 76 years (M = 42.61 ±9.75), where through questionnaires were measured: basic psychological needs satisfaction, motivation, planned behaviour variables and life satisfaction. Results: The structural equations model showed that autonomy perception positively and significantly predicts autonomous motivation. In its turn it positively and significantly predicts intentions. Conclusions: Life satisfaction is positively and significantly predicted by intentions. Results authorise to emphasise the importance of fostering autonomy, since this will favour autonomous motivation, promoting a higher behavioural control over the practitioners’ intentions, thus generating a higher life satisfaction.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

“Keep them out to save our inside:” discourses on immigration by the Spanish far right

    Get PDF
Vox is a far-right, Spanish political party that has steadily grown to become the third main party in the national congress. Immigration is a major presence in Vox’s political agenda. Through Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), we analyze the party’s public speeches and Twitter communications on immigration in the last 3 years, from the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 to the Ukraine-Russia war in 2022. These contexts have provided a fertile ground for Vox’s concerns with the protection of national borders, the criminalization of African and irregular immigrants, and the Spanish Government’s ineffectiveness to protect the Spaniards’ homes. Vox’s main discursive strategies entail constructions of migrants and migration based on dichotomous binaries, culture clash, exclusionary discourses of domopolitics, and fears of imminent social and cultural changes. These constructions are based on the unproblematized belief on essential and unchangeable values that forge the identity of the homeland, which is implicitly threatened by immigrants. Against the migratory invasion, Vox constitutes itself as the ethical protector of the Spanish society and nation, “out of care for the insiders and not out of hatred for outsiders.

CRPA calculations for neutrino-nucleus scattering : from very low energies to the quasielastic peak

    Get PDF
International audienceWe present continuum random phase approximation calculations (CRPA) for neutrino-induced quasielastic scattering off atomic nuclei. The validity of our formalism is checked by a careful confrontation of its results with semi-inclusive double-differential electron scattering data. We pay special attention to excitations in the giant resonance region. The CRPA is well-suited for the description of interactions in this energy range. We aim at providing a uniform description of one-nucleon knockout processes over the whole energy range from threshold to the quasielastic peak. Our calculations point to the fact that low-energy and giant-resonance excitations provide a non-negligible contribution to the interaction strength, especially at forward lepton-scattering angles
