    Andreev reflection in Si-engineered Al/InGaAs hybrid junctions

    Andreev-reflection dominated transport is demonstrated in Al/n-In0.38Ga0.62As superconductor-semiconductor junctions grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs(001). High junction transparency was achieved in low-doped devices by exploiting Si interface bilayers to suppress the native Schottky barrier.     Cloning and mapping multiple S-locus F-box genes in European pear (Pyrus communis L.).

    European pear, as well as its close relatives Japanese pear and apple, exhibits S-RNase-based gametophytic self-incompatibility. The male determinant of this self-incompatibility mechanism is a pollen-expressed protein containing an F-box domain; in the genera Petunia (Solanaceae), Antirrhinum (Plantaginaceae), and Prunus (Rosaceae), a single F-box gene determines the pollen S. In apple and Japanese pear, however, multiple S-locus F-box genes were recently identified as candidates for the pollen S, and they were named S-locus F-Box Brothers. These genes were considered good candidates for the pollen S determinant since they exhibit S-haplotype-specific polymorphisms, pollen-specific expression, and linkage to the S-RNase. In the present study, S-locus F-Box Brothers homologs have been cloned from two of the most agronomically important European pear varieties, "Abbé Fétel" (S104-2/S105) and“Max Red Bartlett" (S101/S102), and they have been mapped on a genetic linkage map developed on their progeny. Our results suggest that the number of Fbox genes linked to the S-locus of the European pear is higher than expected according with previous reports for apple and Japanese pear, since up to five genes were found to be linked to a single S-haplotype. Moreover, two of these genes exhibited an incomplete linkage to the S-RNase, allowing the identification of low-frequency recombinant haplotypes, generated by a crossing-over event between the two genes. These F-box genes are most likely placed in close proximity of the S-locus but do not belong to it, and they can thus be excluded from being responsible for the determination of pollen S function

    Hidden Comorbidities in Asthma: A Perspective for a Personalized Approach

    : Bronchial asthma is the most frequent inflammatory non-communicable condition affecting the airways worldwide. It is commonly associated with concomitant conditions, which substantially contribute to its burden, whether they involve the lung or other districts. The present review aims at providing an overview of the recent acquisitions in terms of asthma concomitant systemic conditions, besides the commonly known respiratory comorbidities. The most recent research has highlighted a number of pathobiological interactions between asthma and other organs in the view of a shared immunological background underling different diseases. A bi-univocal relationship between asthma and common conditions, including cardiovascular, metabolic or neurodegenerative diseases, as well as rare disorders such as sickle cell disease, α1-Antitrypsin deficiency and immunologic conditions with hyper-eosinophilia, should be considered and explored, in terms of diagnostic work-up and long-term assessment of asthma patients. The relevance of that acquisition is of utmost importance in the management of asthma patients and paves the way to a new approach in the light of a personalized medicine perspective, besides targeted therapies

    Could we find any signal of the stratosphere-ionosphere coupling in Antarctica?

    An investigation searching for a possible coupling between the lower ionosphere and the middle atmosphere in Antarctica is here performed on the basis of stratospheric vertical temperature profiles and ionospheric absorption data observed at the Antarctic Italian Base of Terra Nova Bay (74.69°S, 164.12°E) during local summer time. The result obtained by applying a multi-regression analysis and a Superimposed Epoch Analysis (SEA) shows a statistically significant ionosphere-stratosphere interaction. In particular, by selecting stratospheric temperature maxima occurring at different heights as the referring epoch («zero day») for the SEA approach, the ionospheric absorption is found to show a positive and/or negative trend (several days) around it. The tendency for an increasing/decreasing absorption is obtained for temperature maxima occurring below/above the stratospheric level of about 17-19 km, respectively

    Membrane association of peroxiredoxin-2 in red cells is mediated by n-terminal cytoplasmic domain of band 3

    Band 3(B3),the anion transporter, is an integral membrane protein that plays a key structural role by anchor in the plasmamembrane to the spectrin-based membrane skeleton in the red cell. In addition, it also plays a critical role in the assembly of glycolytic enzymes to regulate red cell metabolism. However, its ability to recruit proteins that can prevent membrane oxidation has not been previously explored. In this study, using a variety of experimental approaches including cross-linking studies, fluorescence and dichroic measurements,surface plasmon resonance analysis, and proteolytic digestion assays, we document that the antioxidant protein peroxiredoxin-2(PRDX2), the third most abundant cytoplasmic protein in RBCs, interacts with the cytoplasmic domain of B3. The surface electrostatic potential analysis and stoichiometry measurements revealed that the N-terminal peptide of B3 is involved in the interaction. PRDX2 underwent a conformational change upon its binding to B3 without losing its peroxidase activity. Hemichrome formation induced by phenylhydrazine of RBCs prevented membrane association of PRDX2, implying overlapping binding sites. Documentation of the absence of binding of PRDX2 to B3 Neapolis red cell membranes, in which the initial N-terminal 11 amino acids are deleted, enabled us to conclude that PRDX2 binds to the N-terminal cytoplasmic domain of B3 and that the first 11 amino acids of this domain are crucial for PRDX2 membrane association in intact RBCs. These findings imply yet another important role for B3 in regulating red cell membrane function

    Rapid clinical management of leishmaniasis in emergency department: a case report with clinical review of recent literature

    Systemic or localized lympho-adenomegaly is a common cause of access to the emergency department (ED), and differential diagnosis is often complicated. The combination of anamnesis, physical examination, laboratory tests, and instrumental diagnosis are extremely important to orientate toward a rapid and correct therapy, even if a prompt discrimination of the etiology of this lymphadenomegaly is not often possible. Our aim with this review is to improve the management of a dierential diagnosis between hematological and infective diseases as leishmaniasis in ED and suggest quick diagnostic techniques that might be useful for early identification. Together in the review, we describe a case report of a young man aected from visceral leishmaniasis who presented to our ED and was incorrectly addressed to the wrong ward for the study of his condition. Subsequently, we focus on the clinical presentation of visceral leishmaniasis and compare it to the most common dierential diagnoses that are usually taken into account in the management of such patients

    Evidence of two-electron tunneling interference in Nb/InAs junctions

    The impact of junction transparency in driving phase-coherent charge transfer across diffusive semiconductor-superconductor junctions is demonstrated. We present conductivity data for a set of Nb-InAs junctions differing only in interface transparency. Our experimental findings are analyzed within the quasi-classical Green-function approach and unambiguously show the physical processes giving rise to the observed excess zero-bias conductivity.Comment: 10 pages (RevTex), 4 figures (PostScript), accepted for pubblication in Physical Review
