    Monte Carlo studies of the jet activity in Higgs + 2 jet events

    Tree-level studies have shown in the past that kinematical correlations between the two jets in Higgs+2-jet events are direct probes of the Higgs couplings, e.g. of their CP nature. In this paper we explore the impact of higher-order corrections on the azimuthal angle correlation of the two leading jets and on the rapidity distribution of extra jets. Our study includes matrix-element and shower MC effects, for the two leading sources of Higgs plus two jet events at the CERN LHC, namely vector-boson and gluon fusion. We show that the discriminating features present in the previous leading-order matrix element studies survive.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures. Version to appear on JHEP.     System dynamics modelling for electric and hybrid commercial vehicles adoption

    Problems caused by the increasing freight transportation demand in cities call for integrated solutions where all stakeholders’ efforts are coordinated, in order to both reduce the negative impacts of freight transportation, such as pollution and congestion, and carry no disadvantages to public and private operators. Among the solutions that can be implemented for these purposes, one of the most studied and applied one is the partial or total substitution of commercial vans with low emission vehicles. Previous studies have been focused mainly on the vehicle-related factors that make such adoption sustainable for the private stakeholders. However, there is a lack of contributions that also take into account the operational aspects of a city logistics system. In order to contribute to this literature, our work develops a System Dynamics model that assesses the adoption of low emission vehicles by analysing the most important operational factors typical of a freight distribution system. Results of the simulation and the sensitivity analyses demonstrate that the adoption of low emission commercial vehicles is feasible within a reasonable time period if some strategies are put in place. For instance, public contribution including both incentives to low emission vehicles and disincentives to traditional ones could effectively increase the adoption process, along with effective advertising campaigns about the operational benefits given by such distribution model

    Analysis and trends of city logistics projects in Europe

    Last mile urban freight distribution systems generate negative externalities such as pollution, traffic congestion and other nuisances. To minimize such negative impacts, City Logistics (CL) projects are being implemented in many cities around Europe. CL aims at optimizing the logistics and transport activities by private companies in urban areas while considering traffic congestion and energy consumption. However, most CL initiatives do not consider all these aspects together, but they address them separately. In this context, there is a lack of studies on the state of the art and international diffusion of CL systems. In order to bridge the research gap, this paper proposes an exploratory study of a sample made of 70 European cities that have been piloting CL projects and a set of City Logistics Indices (CLI) is defined and used as indicators of the breath and number of CL measures implemented in a city. In particular, three different domains of application have been defined, namely Infrastructure, Regulation and Technology, together with and Aggregated City Logistics Index (ACLI) encompassing all of them. Results highlight that Southern European cities show higher CLIs. This is due to the fact that these cities have been undertaking fewer measures to reduce traffic congestion and pollution in the past compared to other regions and are now trying to filling the gap. This work illustrates how the CL issue has been applied in different European geographical areas so that it lays foundations for exploring the socio-cultural implications of various CL implementations

    Heavy neutrino signals at large hadron colliders

    We study the LHC discovery potential for heavy Majorana neutrino singlets in the process pp -> W+ -> l+ N -> l+ l+ jj (l=e,mu) plus its charge conjugate. With a fast detector simulation we show that backgrounds involving two like-sign charged leptons are not negligible and, moreover, they cannot be eliminated with simple sequential kinematical cuts. Using a likelihood analysis it is shown that, for heavy neutrinos coupling only to the muon, LHC has 5 sigma sensitivity for masses up to 200 GeV in the final state mu+- mu+- jj. This reduction in sensitivity, compared to previous parton-level estimates, is driven by the ~ 10^2-10^3 times larger background. Limits are also provided for e+- e+- jj and e+- mu+- jj final states, as well as for Tevatron. For heavy Dirac neutrinos the prospects are worse because backgrounds involving two opposite charge leptons are much larger. For this case, we study the observability of the lepton flavour violating signal e+- mu-+ jj. As a by-product of our analysis, heavy neutrino production has been implemented within the ALPGEN framework.Comment: Latex 36 pages, 49 PS figures.     Resolution of enuresis with aripiprazole in children with psychiatric disorders: two case reports

    Background: Aripiprazole is a third-generation atypical antipsychotic drug that acts as a stabilizer of the dopaminergic and serotonergic system. As partial agonist of the dopamine (D2) and serotonin (5-HT1A) receptors, it appears to be efective in reducing mania in patients with bipolar disorder, tics in Tourette Syndrome, aggression in schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder. Enuresis has been reported among its side efects. Only a few studies, with conficting results, have investigated the relationship between aripiprazole and enuresis. Case presentation: We report the disappearance of enuresis in a Caucasian girl with intellectual disability and oppositional defant disorder and in a Caucasian boy with intellectual disability and early-onset psychosis, both following initiation of treatment with aripiprazole. Conclusion: The aim of this study was to contribute to the literature on the use of aripripazole in subjects with enuresis. Our fndings lead us to suggest that aripiprazole is less burdened with side efects, including bedwetting, than other antipsychotic drugs

    Copper(II) Complexes of Cyclams Containing Nitrophenyl Substituents: Push–Pull Behavior and Scorpionate Coordination of the Nitro Group

    The three nitrophenyl–cyclam derivatives (nitrocyclams): 1-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (2), 1-(2-nitrophenyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (3), and 1-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (4), in an MeCN solution, specifically incorporate the CuII ion according to an irreversible process signaled by disappearance of the yellow color for a concentration c < 1 × 10–4 M and by a yellow-to-red color change for c ≄ 1 × 10–3, and must be considered efficient and specific dosimeters of copper(II) salts. When present in the ortho position of the nitrophenyl substituent, the −NO2 group coordinates the CuII according to a scorpionate mode, while the metallocyclam system exhibits a trans-I configuration. In an MeCN solution the red trans-I-[CuII(3)]2+ and trans-I-[CuII(4)]2+ scorpionate complexes slowly convert into the violet trans-III scorpionate complexes. Kinetic aspects of the trans-I-to-trans-III configurational rearrangement were investigated in detail for the [CuII(4)]2+ system. In particular, the conversion is spectacularly accelerated by catalytic amounts of Cl–, NCO–, and F–. While for Cl– and NCO– the effect can be associated with the capability of the anion to stabilize through coordination a possible dissociative intermediate, the amazingly powerful effect of F– must be related to the preliminary deprotonation of one N–H fragment of the macrocycle, driven by the formation of the HF2– ion. Most of the metal complex species studied in solution were isolated in a crystalline form, and their molecular structures were elucidated through X-ray diffraction studies.     Rosmarinus officinalis L.: chemical modifications of the essential oil and evaluation of antioxidant and antimicrobial activity.

    Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil was separated into its hydrocarbon and oxygenated fractions. The major compounds in the hydrocarbon fraction were α-pinene (44.2%), camphene (24.5%), and limonene (11.7%), while in the oxygenated fraction they were 1,8-cineole (37.6%), camphor (16.5%), and bornyl acetate (21.4%). The hydrocarbon fraction was submitted to a hydroformylation process and the antioxidant activity of the product was screened by the DPPH and ÎČ-carotene/linoleic acid tests. The hydroformylated fraction maintained the antioxidant activity of the whole oil. The MIC (minimal inhibitory concentration) and the MBC (minimal bactericidal concentration) of the essential oil, hydrocarbon, oxygenated and hydroformylated fractions were also tested on several microorganisms. Aeromonas sobria and Candida strains were the most susceptible micro-organisms. The hydroformylated fraction exhibited a MBC against Candida strains resistant to the other fractions

    ALPGEN, a generator for hard multiparton processes in hadronic collisions

    This paper presents a new event generator, ALPGEN, dedicated to the study of multiparton hard processes in hadronic collisions. The code performs, at the leading order in QCD and EW interactions, the calculation of the exact matrix elements for a large set of parton-level processes of interest in the study of the Tevatron and LHC data. The current version of the code describes the following final states: (W -> ffbar') QQbar+ N jets (Q being a heavy quark, and f=l,q), with N f fbar)+QQbar+Njets (f=l,nu), with N ffbar') + charm + N jets (f=l,q), N f fbar') + N jets (f=l,q) and (Z/gamma* -> f fbar)+ N jets (f=l,nu), with N<=6; nW+mZ+lH+N jets, with n+m+l+N<=8 and N<=3 including all 2-fermion decay modes of W and Z bosons, with spin correlations; Q Qbar+N jets (N b f fbar' decays and relative spin correlations included if Q=t; Q Qbar Q' Qbar'+N jets, with Q and Q' heavy quarks (possibly equal) and N b f fbar' decays and relative spin correlations included if Q=t; N jets, with N<=6.     Biphasic calcium phosphate biomaterials: Stem Cell-derived Osteoinduction or In-vivo Osteoconduction? Novel insights in Maxillary Sinus Augmentation by advanced Imaging

    none11noMaxillary sinus augmentation is often necessary prior to implantology procedure, in particular in cases of atrophic posterior maxilla. In this context, bone substitute biomaterials made of biphasic calcium phosphates, produced by three-dimensional additive manufacturing were shown to be highly biocompatible with an efficient osteoconductivity, especially when combined with cell-based tissue engineering. Thus, in the present research, osteoinduction and osteoconduction properties of biphasic calcium-phosphate constructs made by direct rapid prototyping and engineered with ovine-derived amniotic epithelial cells or amniotic fluid cells were evaluated. More in details, this preclinical study was performed using adult sheep targeted to receive scaffold alone (CTR), oAFSMC, or oAEC engineered constructs. The grafted sinuses were explanted at 90 days and a cross-linked experimental approach based on Synchrotron Radiation microCT and histology analysis was performed on the complete set of samples. The study, performed taking into account the distance from native surrounding bone, demonstrated that no significant differences occurred in bone regeneration between oAEC-, oAFMSC-cultured, and Ctr samples and that there was a predominant action of the osteoconduction versus the stem cells osteo-induction.
