    Influence of Mediation on Estate Planning Decisions: Evidence from Indian Survey Data

    Background: Intestate death can lead to the distribution of assets against the personal wishes of the deceased and is a problem in India, as 80% of Indians die without making a last will. Following the concepts of decision theory (i.e., the theory of choice), stewardship theory, agency theory, and signaling theory, the purpose of this study is to examine the influence of meditation on estate planning decisions. This study also seeks to extend previous findings on the influence of religious beliefs on the estate planning decisions of Canadians to that of Indians. Methods: Employed and self-employed individuals from India were surveyed regarding their perceptions of meditation and estate planning decisions. Results: The survey indicates that mediation positively influences the estate planning decisions while individuals who practice meditation have greater preferences for estate planning compared with those who do not. The findings suggest that individual assets, family size, and education positively influence the estate planning decisions of Indians. Conclusion: Reported meditation, individual assets, family size, location, education, and gender are positively correlated with the estate planning decisions of Indians

    We investigated the association between socially responsible investment, internal fnancing sources, and access to bank fnancing in the production industry of India. Using a survey research design, owners of small production frms were asked about their perceptions regarding socially responsible investment, internal fnancing sources, and access to bank fnancing. We found that socially responsible investment and internal fnancing sources help owners of small production frms improve access to bank fnancing. This study contributes to the literature on the relationship between socially responsible investment, internal fnancing sources, and access to bank fnancing. The fndings may be useful for fnancial managers, production frm owners, investors, consultants, and other stakeholder

    Factors Affecting Ethical Sources of External Debt Financing for Indian Agribusiness Firms

    Majority of the Indian farmers are financially constrained and pay very high interest rate to private moneylenders which has a negative impact on the survivability and growth of agribusiness firms. Because of less strict debt financing requirements farmers become prey to predatory lenders from private lending institutions that are not controlled by the central bank and may not behave in an ethical way. The study investigates factors affecting ethical sources of external debt financing by taking a sample of Indian agribusiness firms. Owners of agribusiness firms were interviewed through personal visits and telephone calls regarding the factors affecting ethical sources of external debt financing. The findings show that several factors affect ethical sources of external debt financing for agribusiness firms in India. This study contributes to the literature on the factors that affect ethical sources of external debt financing. This study also provides recommendations to improve access to ethical sources of external debt financing. The findings may be useful for agribusiness owners (farmers), financial managers, investors, agribusiness management consultants, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders

    Multiple micronutrients and docosahexaenoic acid supplementation during pregnancy : A randomized controlled study

    Maternal dietary intake during pregnancy needs to meet increased nutritional demands to maintain metabolism and to support fetal development. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is essential for fetal neuro-/visual development and in immunomodulation, accumulating rapidly within the developing brain and central nervous system. Levels available to the fetus are governed by the maternal diet. In this multicenter, parallel, randomized controlled trial, we evaluated once-daily supplementation with multiple micronutrients and DHA (i.e., multiple micronutrient supplementation, MMS) on maternal biomarkers and infant anthropometric parameters during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy compared with no supplementation. Primary efficacy endpoint: change in maternal red blood cell (RBC) DHA (wt% total fatty acids) during the study. Secondary variables: other biomarkers of fatty acid and oxidative status, vitamin D, and infant anthropometric parameters at delivery. Supplementation significantly increased RBC DHA levels, the omega-3 index, and vitamin D levels. Subscapular skinfold thickness was significantly greater with MMS in infants. Safety outcomes were comparable between groups. This first randomized controlled trial of supplementation with multiple micronutrients and DHA in pregnant women indicated that MMS significantly improved maternal DHA and vitamin D status in an industrialized setting\u2014an important finding considering the essential roles of DHA and vitamin D

    Validation of ultrasound bioimaging to predict worm burden and treatment efficacy in preclinical filariasis drug screening models

    Filariasis is a global health problem targeted for elimination. Curative drugs (macroflaricides) are required to accelerate elimination. Candidate macroflaricides require testing in preclinical models of flariasis. The incidence of infection failures and high intra-group variation means that large group sizes are required for drug testing. Further, a lack of accurate, quantitative adult biomarkers results in protracted timeframes or multiple groups for endpoint analyses. Here we evaluate intra-vital ultrasonography (USG) to identify B. malayi in the peritonea of gerbils and CB.17 SCID mice and assess prognostic value in determining drug efcacy. USG operators, blinded to infection status, could detect intra-peritoneal flarial dance sign (ipFDS) with 100% specifcity and sensitivity, when >5 B. malayi worms were present in SCID mice. USG ipFDS was predictive of macroflaricidal activity in randomized, blinded studies comparing fubendazole, albendazole and vehicle-treated SCID mice. Semi-quantifcation of ipFDS could predict worm burden >10 with 87–100% accuracy in SCID mice or gerbils. We estimate that pre-assessment of worm burden by USG could reduce intra-group variation, obviate the need for surgical implantations in gerbils, and reduce total SCID mouse use by 40%. Thus, implementation of USG may reduce animal use, refne endpoints and negate invasive techniques for assessing anti-flarial drug efcacy

    The therapeutic efficacy and macrofilaricidal activity of doxycycline for the treatment of river blindness

    Background. Onchocerca volvulus and lymphatic filariae, causing river blindness and elephantiasis, depend on endosymbiotic Wolbachia bacteria for growth, development, fertility, and survival. Clinical trials have shown that doxycycline treatment eliminates Wolbachia, causing long-term sterilization of adult female filariae and effecting potent macrofilaricidal activity. The continual reinfection by drug-naive worms that occurs in these trial settings dilutes observable anti-Wolbachia and antifilarial effects, making it difficult to estimate therapeutic efficacy and compare different doxycycline regimens, evaluated at different times after treatment. Methods. A meta-analytical modeling framework is developed to link all usable data collected from clinical trials measuring the Wolbachia status and viability of individual female adult worms collected at various times after treatment with 4, 5, or 6 weeks of daily 100 or 200 mg oral doxycycline. The framework is used to estimate efficacy parameters that are not directly measurable as trial outcomes. Results. The estimated efficacy of doxycycline (the maximum proportional reduction in the percentage of adult female O. volvulus positive for Wolbachia) is 91%–94% on average, irrespective of the treatment regimen. Efficacy is >95% in the majority of trial participants. The life span of Wolbachia-depleted worms is reduced by 70%–80%, from approximately 10 years to 2–3 years. Conclusions. The efficacy parameters are pertinent to the prospects of using doxycycline on a “test and treat” basis for onchocerciasis control and confirm doxycycline as a potent macrofilaricidal therapy. The modeling approach is more generally relevant to the design and evaluation of clinical trials for antifilarial drugs conducted in endemic settings

    Traditional Roles in a Non‐Traditional Setting: Genetic Counseling in Precision Oncology

    Next generation sequencing technology is increasingly utilized in oncology with the goal of targeting therapeutics to improve response and reduce side effects. Interpretation of tumor mutations requires sequencing of paired germline DNA, raising questions about incidental germline findings. We describe our experiences as part of a research team implementing a protocol for whole genome sequencing (WGS) of tumors and paired germline DNA known as the Michigan Oncology Sequencing project (MI‐ONCOSEQ) that includes options for receiving incidental germline findings. Genetic counselors (GCs) discuss options for return of results with patients during the informed consent process and document family histories. GCs also review germline findings and actively participate in the multi‐disciplinary Precision Medicine Tumor Board (PMTB), providing clinical context for interpretation of germline results and making recommendations about disclosure of germline findings. GCs have encountered ethical and counseling challenges with participants, described here. Although GCs have not been traditionally involved in molecular testing of tumors, our experiences with MI‐ONCOSEQ demonstrate that GCs have important applicable skills to contribute to multi‐disciplinary care teams implementing precision oncology. Broader use of WGS in oncology treatment decision making and American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) recommendations for active interrogation of germline tissue in tumor‐normal dyads suggests that GCs will have future opportunities in this area outside of research settings.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/147078/1/jgc40655.pd

    Mitochondrial DNA content and methylation in fetal cord blood of pregnancies with placental insufficiency

    Introduction: Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and preeclampsia (PE) are pregnancy disorders characterized by placental insufficiency with oxygen/nutrient restriction and oxidative stress, all influencing mitochondria functionality and number. Moreover, IUGR and PE fetuses are predisposed to diseases later in life, and this might occur through epigenetic alterations. Here we analyze content and methylation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), for the first time in IUGR and PE singleton fetuses, to identify possible alterations in mtDNA levels and/or epigenetic control of mitochondrial loci relevant to replication (D-loop) and functionality (mt-TF/RNR1: protein synthesis, mt-CO1: respiratory chain complex). Methods: We studied 35 term and 8 preterm control, 31 IUGR, 17 PE/IUGR and 17 PE human singleton pregnancies with elective cesarean delivery. Fetal cord blood was collected and evaluated for biochemical parameters. Extracted DNA was subjected to Real-time PCR to assess mtDNA content and analyzed for D-loop, mt-TF/RNR1 and mt-CO1 methylation by bisulfite conversion and pyrosequencing. Results: mtDNA levels were increased in all pathologic groups compared to controls. Mitochondrial loci showed very low methylation levels in all samples; D-loop methylation was further decreased in the most severe cases and associated to umbilical vein pO2. mt-CO1 methylation levels inversely correlated to mtDNA content. Discussion: Increased mtDNA levels in IUGR, PE/IUGR and PE cord blood may denote a fetal response to placental insufficiency. Hypomethylation of D-loop, mt-TF/RNR1 and mt-CO1 loci confirms their relevance in pregnancy
