Benefit comparison of captioned online courses for american, international, and deaf/hard of hearing students: from the viewpoint of individual value and total value

    Get PDF
This study evaluated benefits toward Captioned Online Courses (COC) among American, International, and Deaf/Hard of Hearing students from two California universities. As a result, COC were not just viewed as accommodations for DHH students, but also as providing benefits for American and International students. Study results indicated that international students showed higher individual value for COC than the other groups, while American students had the smallest individual value but presented the larger total value toward COC than the other groups due to their comprising the largest population at both universities. The aggregate total value for all groups was approximately 2,000,000.00,whichwouldrepresentthecostofconducting370classesatthelowestpriceof2,000,000.00, which would represent the cost of conducting 370 classes at the lowest price of 2.00 per minute. These results indicate the possibility of expanding future COC as Universal Design model for postsecondary educational institutions.Peer Reviewe

Perspectives of communities on use of alcohol among children in rural areas

    Get PDF
Globalisation raises hopes that communities will become self reliant through development success and thus become an integrated whole (Offiong 2001). But the creation of global village leads to fragmentation of communities, a loss of norms and local values. This study focuses on communities of the Eastern Cape Province, exploring the nature of and extent to which children use alcohol as a consequence of cultural rituals. The researcher aims to develop a culturally sensitive psycho-social approach to address alcohol use among children. The purpose of the research was to investigate the extent to which certain cultural practices contribute towards alcohol use among children in the rural areas of the Eastern Cape Province. Thus exploring the nature and extent to which children use alcohol as a consequence of cultural rituals and to explore whether families and communities are aware of the impact of alcohol use by children in the community. The research was qualitative in nature and through semi-structured interview schedules the researcher was able to gain insight in the area of substance use amongst children in the rural areas of the Eastern Cape Province. Community members, learners from schools, educators and probation officers formed part of the research sample. The research findings suggest that community members are aware that the traditional rituals that are carried out in the rural areas have been contributing to the issue of children using alcohol. However, the community members feel challenged as they become conflicted by their traditional rituals and this impacts upon children using alcohol

    Planar hole-doping concentration and effective three-dimensional hole-doping concentration for single-layer high-TcT_c superconductors

We propose that physical properties for the high temperature superconductors can be addressed by either a two-dimensional planar hole-doping concentration (PplP_{pl}) or an effective three-dimentional hole-doping concentration (P3DP_{3D}). We find that superconducting transition temperature (TcT_c) exhibits a universal dome-shaped behavior in the TcT_c vs.vs. P3DP_{3D} plot with a universal optimal doping concentration at P3DP_{3D} \sim 1.6 ×\times 1021^{21} cm3^{-3} for the single-layer high temperature superconductors.Comment: 2pages, 2 figures, submitted to Physica C (Proceedings of M2S-HTSC VIII) ; Ref. 10 is revise

    Monoaxial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction-induced topological Hall effect in a new chiral-lattice magnet GdPt2_2B

We investigate the topological Hall effect (THE) in the monoaxial chiral crystal GdPt2_2B, a recently discovered compound that exhibits putative helimagnetism below 87 K. The distinct THE was observed in GdPt2B in the magnetically ordered state. The scaling relations for anomalous and topological Hall conductivities differed from those of conventional models based on the scattering process. We further demonstrate the clear scaling behavior of the THE in a wide temperature range, which we attribute to the monoaxial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction under external magnetic fields perpendicular to the screw axis. The THE induced by the monoaxial DM interaction as well as the THE in a monoaxial chiral crystal of f-electron system are demonstrated in this study.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. The Novel Eryngii Method of Nipple Reduction for Female-to-Male Transsexuals

Nosaka, NobuyukiMastectomy is usually the first and most important surgical procedure in female-to-male (FTM) individuals with gender identity disorder. Nipple reduction is also important in the process of reconstructing the chest wall for a more male appearance. If the nipples remain large after a mastectomy, the results may be disappointing to many FTM transsexuals. Nipple reduction enables these individuals to go to the beach or Japanese public baths, where they may go topless in public. We therefore consider that nipple reduction is indicated for all FTM transsexuals who desire it. There are a variety of methods for the reduction of enlarged nipples for women or non-FTM patients, but only a few reports have described the process used to create masculine-appearing nipples for FTM transsexuals. We developed a novel technique called the Eryngii method for creating male-like nipples using a 4-mm diameter dermal punch knife. The name of the method refers to the Eryngii king trumpet mushroom, which the nipple resembles after the surgical process. The main strength of this method is that it permits the creation of ideal nipples without difficulty. Here we introduce the technique and discuss our history of surgical methods for nipple reduction, including improvements and elaborations
