Characteristics of Kiso Ultra-Violet Excess Galaxies
We examined the general characteristics of the Kiso Ultra-violet Excess
Galaxies (KUGs). We present for the first time the quantitative expressions for
the criteria of the KUGs; the boundary color separating the KUGs from the
non-KUGs is (B-V)_{T} = 0.74 and the KUG degrees of UV strength are found to
correlate with the mean (B-V)_{T} colors. We investigate the nature of the
KUGs, a sample of blue galaxy population, and show that (1) about a half of the
KUGs are spiral galaxies with Sb to Scd, (2) the KUGs are biased to late-type
galaxies and include early-type galaxies with young star populations, and (3)
the KUGs are preferably found among less luminous galaxies with log L(B) < 10.
The KUGs also contain the post-starburst galaxies, many of which are found
among the blue galaxy population at intermediate redshifts. The analysis of the
far-infrared data shows that a typical present-to-past star formation rate for

Photometric Observations of Star Formation Activity in Early Type Spirals
We observationally study the current star formation activities of early type
spiral galaxies. We construct a complete sample of 15 early type spirals having
far-infrared (FIR) to optical B band luminosity ratios, L(FIR)/L(B), larger
than the average of the type, and make their CCD imaging of the R and H-alpha
bands. The equivalent widths of H-alpha emission increase with increasing
L(FIR)/L(B), indicating that L(FIR)/L(B) can be an indicator of star formation
for such early type spirals with star formation activities higher than the
average. For all of the observed early type spirals, the extended HII regions
exist at the central regions with some asymmetric features. H-alpha emission is
more concentrated to the galactic center than the R band light, and the degree
of the concentration increases with the star formation activity. We also
analyze the relation between the star formation activities and the existence of
companion galaxies in the sample galaxies and other bright early type spirals.
No correlation is found and this suggests that the interaction is not

New Improved Photometric Redshifts of Galaxies in the HDF
We report new improved photometric redshifts of 1048 galaxies in the Hubble
Deep Field (HDF). A standard chi^2 minimizing method is applied to seven-color
UBVIJHK photometry by Fernandez-Soto, Lanzetta, & Yahil (1999). We use 187
template SEDs representing a wide variety of morphology and age of observed
galaxies based on a population synthesis model by Kodama & Arimoto (1997). We
introduce two new recipes. First, the amount of the internal absorption is
changed as a free parameter in the range of E(B-V)=0.0 to 0.5 with an interval
of 0.1. Second, the absorption due to intergalactic HI clouds is also changed
by a factor of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 around the opacity given by Madau (1995). The
total number of template SEDs is thus 187x6x3=3,366, except for the redshift
grid. The dispersion sigma_z of our photometric redshifts with respect to
spectroscopic redshifts is sigma_z=0.08 and 0.24 for z2, respectively,
which are smaller than the corresponding values (sigma_z=0.09 and 0.45) by
Fernandez-Soto et al. Improvement is significant, especially in z>2. This is
due to smaller systematic errors which are largely reduced mainly by including
three opacities due to intergalactic HI clouds. We discuss redshift
distribution N(z) and cosmic star formation rate based on our new photometric

A Kluyveromyces marxianus 2-deoxyglucose-resistant mutant with enhanced activity of xylose utilization
Thermotolerant ethanologenic yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus is capable of fermenting various sugars including xylose but glucose represses to hamper the utilization of other sugars. To acquire glucose repression-defective strains, 33 isolates as 2-deoxyglucose (2-DOG)-resistant mutants were acquired from about 100 colonies grown on plates containing 2-DOG, which were derived from an efficient strain DMKU 3-1042. According to the characteristics of sugar consumption abilities and cell growth and ethanol accumulation along with cultivation time, they were classified into three groups. The first group (3 isolates) utilized glucose and xylose in similar patterns along with cultivation to those of the parental strain, presumably due to reduction of the uptake of 2-DOG or enhancement of its export. The second group (29 isolates) showed greatly delayed utilization of glucose, presumably by reduction of the uptake or initial catabolism of glucose. The last group, only one isolate, showed enhanced utilization ability of xylose in the presence of glucose. Further analysis revealed that the isolate had a single nucleotide mutation to cause amino acid substitution (G270S) in RAG5 encoding hexokinase and exhibited very low activity of the enzyme. The possible mechanism of defectiveness of glucose repression in the mutant is discussed in this paper. Photometric Properties of Kiso Ultraviolet-Excess Galaxies in the Lynx-Ursa Major Region
We have performed a systematic study of several regions in the sky where the
number of galaxies exhibiting star formation (SF) activity is greater than
average. We used Kiso ultraviolet-excess galaxies (KUGs) as our SF-enhanced
sample. By statistically comparing the KUG and non-KUG distributions, we
discovered four KUG-rich regions with a size of . One of these regions corresponds spatially to a filament of length
Mpc in the Lynx-Ursa Major region (). We call this ``the Lynx-Ursa
Major (LUM) filament''. We obtained surface photometry of 11 of
the KUGs in the LUM filament and used these to investigate the integrated
colors, distribution of SF regions, morphologies, and local environments. We
found that these KUGs consist of distorted spiral galaxies and compact galaxies
with blue colors. Their star formation occurs in the entire disk, and is not
confined to just the central regions. The colors of the SF regions imply that
active star formation in the spiral galaxies occurred yr ago,
while that of the compact objects occurred yr ago. Though the
photometric characteristics of these KUGs are similar to those of interacting
galaxies or mergers, most of these KUGs do not show direct evidence of merger

High-pressure dc magnetic measurements on a bisdiselenazolyl radical ferromagnet using a vibrating-coil SQUID magnetometer
The high-pressure magnetic properties of the iodo-substituted bisdiselenazolyl radical ferromagnet IBPSSEt have been studied by vibrating-coil SQUID magnetometry. The magnetic state at a pressure (P) of approximately 2 GPa has the highest Curie temperature (TC) of 27.5 K, and displays an ideal three-dimensional (3D) ferromagnetic interaction network. The value of TC observed by ac magnetic susceptibility measurements is consistent with that obtained from dc measurements below approximately 4 GPa. Field-cooled dc measurements at more elevated pressures reveal a slow evolution of magnetic ordering, so that atP >6 GPa the structure may be described in terms of a 1D ferromagnetic chain with predominantly antiferromagnetic lateral (interchain) interactions, in accord with the results of density functional theory calculations
Supernovae in the Subaru Deep Field: An Initial Sample, and Type Ia Rate, out to Redshift 1.6
Large samples of high-redshift supernovae (SNe) are potentially powerful
probes of cosmic star formation, metal enrichment, and SN physics. We present
initial results from a new deep SN survey, based on re-imaging in the R, i', z'
bands, of the 0.25 deg2 Subaru Deep Field (SDF), with the 8.2-m Subaru
telescope and Suprime-Cam. In a single new epoch consisting of two nights of
observations, we have discovered 33 candidate SNe, down to a z'-band magnitude
of 26.3 (AB). We have measured the photometric redshifts of the SN host
galaxies, obtained Keck spectroscopic redshifts for 17 of the host galaxies,
and classified the SNe using the Bayesian photometric algorithm of Poznanski et
al. (2007) that relies on template matching. After correcting for biases in the
classification, 55% of our sample consists of Type Ia supernovae and 45% of
core-collapse SNe. The redshift distribution of the SNe Ia reaches z ~ 1.6,
with a median of z ~ 1.2. The core-collapse SNe reach z ~ 1.0, with a median of
z ~ 0.5. Our SN sample is comparable to the Hubble Space Telescope/GOODS sample
both in size and redshift range. The redshift distributions of the SNe in the
SDF and in GOODS are consistent, but there is a trend (which requires
confirmation using a larger sample) for more high-z SNe Ia in the SDF. This
trend is also apparent when comparing the SN Ia rates we derive to those based
on GOODS data. Our results suggest a fairly constant rate at high redshift that
could be tracking the star-formation rate. Additional epochs on this field,
already being obtained, will enlarge our SN sample to the hundreds, and
determine whether or not there is a decline in the SN Ia rate at z >~ 1.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, MNRAS accepte
Critical properties of S=1/2 Heisenberg ladders in magnetic fields
The critical properties of the Heisenberg two-leg ladders are
investigated in a magnetic field. Combining the exact diagonalization method
and the finite-size-scaling analysis based on conformal field theory, we
calculate the critical exponents of spin correlation functions numerically. For
a strong interchain coupling, magnetization dependence of the critical
exponents shows characteristic behavior depending on the sign of the interchain
coupling. We also calculate the critical exponents for the Heisenberg
two-leg ladder with a diagonal interaction, which is thought as a model
Hamiltonian of the organic spin ladder compound

experimental results of temperature dependence of the NMR relaxation rate
