    Students' and supervisors' experiences of supervision and training in clinical learning environment

    Clinical training for health profession students is important prior to commencing their future professions. The literature describes a tension between the education assignment and patient care in clinical environments with high demands. Understanding students and supervisors’ experiences in the clinical learning environment isimportant to enhance the quality of clinical education. The overall aim was to explore the clinical learning environment from students’ and supervisors’ perspectives. Study I compared physiotherapy, medical, speech-language pathology, and nursing students’ perceptions of their clinical learning environments. Study II explored physiotherapy students’ experience of supervisors’ preparedness and supervision practices during their first clinical placement. Study III explored medical students’ experiences in the early stages of clinical training. Study IV explored clinical physiotherapy supervisors’ experience of giving feedback to students. To describe and compare students’ perceptions of their clinical learning environments, the Undergraduate Clinical Education Environment Measure was used. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with physiotherapy and medical students. Focus group interviews were performed with physiotherapy supervisors. The findings suggests that students experienced their clinical learning environment differently, the medical students scoring lower than the other students. The physiotherapy students appreciated supervisors who established a relationship with them, encouraged cooperation in the community, and used intended learning outcomes. The medical students were encouraged to push themselves forward in the clinic and ad hoc solutions concerning supervision occurred. Rather than trying to change the circumstances, they opted to adapt to the busy clinical learning environment. The physiotherapy supervisors found it challenging to provide feedback to students but found support within their network. Undergraduate students are generally satisfied with their clinical learning environments, but medical students’ low ratings need attention. It is important that supervisors take the initiative to establish a relationship with students and that focus is given for learning outcomes. Supervisors, need support in their educational role, which otherwise risks being downgraded, resulting in clinical training of variable quality for students. The workplace network provides key support for supervisors’ development of their ability to provide feedback to students

    The effect of desiccation on the emission of volatile bromocarbons from two common temperate macroalgae

    Exposure of intertidal macroalgae during low tide has been linked to the emission of a variety of atmospherically-important trace gases into the coastal atmosphere. In recent years, several studies have investigated the role of inorganic iodine and organoiodides as antioxidants and their emission during exposure to combat oxidative stress, yet the role of organic bromine species during desiccation is less well understood. In this study the emission of dibromomethane (CH2Br2) and bromoform (CHBr3) during exposure and desiccation of two common temperate macroalgae, Fucus vesiculosus and Ulva intestinalis, is reported. Determination of the impact exposure may have on algal physiological processes is difficult as intertidal species are adapted to desiccation and may undergo varying degrees of desiccation before their physiology is affected. For this reason we include comparisons between photosynthetic capacity (Fv/Fm) and halocarbon emissions during a desiccation time series. In addition, the role of rewetting with freshwater to simulate exposure to rain was also investigated. Our results show that an immediate flux of bromocarbons occurs upon exposure, followed by a decline in bromocarbon emissions. We suggest that this immediate bromocarbon pulse may be linked to volatilisation or emissions of existing bromocarbon stores from the algal surface rather than the production of bromocarbons as an antioxidant response

    The author has identified the following significant results. Image interpretation and computer-assisted techniques were developed to analyze LANDSAT scenes in support of resource inventory and monitoring requirements for the Texas coastal region. Land cover and land use maps, at a scale of 1:125,000 for the image interpretation product and 1:24,000 for the computer-assisted product, were generated covering four Texas coastal test sites. Classification schemes which parallel national systems were developed for each procedure, including 23 classes for image interpretation technique and 13 classes for the computer-assisted technique. Results indicate that LANDSAT-derived land cover and land use maps can be successfully applied to a variety of planning and management activities on the Texas coast. Computer-derived land/water maps can be used with tide gage data to assess shoreline boundaries for management purposes

    A Concept Analysis of Parental Uncertainty in Illness of an Infant

    Background: The concept of uncertainty in illness has been well described and applied to many different areas of nursing and other disciplines. Specifically, parental uncertainty in illness of an infant is a meaningful concept that has specific attributes and implications. A current concept analysis that considers the changing healthcare setting, historical conceptual inconsistencies, and a lack of information concerning parents of infants is needed. Purpose: To identify essential antecedents, attributes, and consequences of parental uncertainty in illness using Rodgers\u27 Evolutionary Concept Analysis method. Methods: A literature search was conducted using PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycInfo. The following keywords were used in combination using the Boolean terms “AND” and “OR”: parental uncertainty; infants; parental uncertainty in illness; preterm infants; parent; uncertainty. Inclusion criteria: articles published between 2000 and 2017 and published in English. The search included 38 articles published from 2000 to 2017 with a specific focus on parental uncertainty in illness. Findings: Parental uncertainty in illness of an infant is a paradoxical, cognitive, and emotional experience in which there is an inability to create meaning and may cause disruption in parental role development. Implications for Practice: Nursing care of parents with ill infants and children must include sensitivity to parents\u27 experiences of uncertainty in illness. Nurses are uniquely positioned to normalize parental uncertainty and facilitate healthy coping

    The author has identified the following significant results. Four LANDSAT scenes were analyzed for the Harbor Island area test sites to produce land cover and land use maps using both image interpretation and computer-assisted techniques. When evaluated against aerial photography, the mean accuracy for three scenes was 84% for the image interpretation product and 62% for the computer-assisted classification maps. Analysis of the fourth scene was not completed using the image interpretation technique, because of poor quality, false color composite, but was available from the computer technique. Preliminary results indicate that these LANDSAT products can be applied to a variety of planning and management activities in the Texas coastal zone

    Spatial variability of snow chemistry in western Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica

    During the austral summer of 1993-94 a number of 1-2 m deep snow pits were sampled in connection with firn-coring in western Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. The traverse went from 800 to about 3000 m a.s.l. upon the high-altitude plateau. Profiles of cations (Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+), anions (Cl−, NO3-, SO4 2- , CH3SO3 −) and stable oxygen isotopes (δ18O) from 11 snow pils are presented here. Close to the coast 2 m of snow accumulates in about 2-3 years, whilst at sites on the high-altitude plateau 2 m of snow accumulates in 10—14 years. The spatial variation in ion concentrations shows that the ions can be divided into two groups, one with sea-salt elements and methane sulfonate and the other with nitrate and sulfate. For the sca-salt elements and methane sulfonate the concentrations decrease with increasing altitude and increasing distance from the coast, as well as with decreasing temperature and decreasing accumulation rate. For nitrate and sulfate the concentrations are constant or increase with respect to these parameters. This pattern suggests that the sources for sca-salt elements and methane sulfonate are local, whereas the sources for nitrate and sulfate are a mixture of local and long-range transport

    The Luminosity Function of Young Star Clusters In "The Antennae" Galaxies (NGC 4038/4039)

    The WFPC2 of the HST has been used to obtain high-resolution images of NGC 4038/4039 that go roughly 3 magnitudes deeper in V than previous observations made during Cycle 2 (-14 < M_V < -6). To first order the luminosity function (LF) is a power law, with exponent \alpha = -2.12 +/- 0.04. However, after decoupling the cluster and stellar LFs, which overlap in the range -9 < M_V < -6, we find an apparent bend in the young cluster LF at approximately M_V = -10.4. The LF has a power law exponent -2.6 +/- 0.2 in the brightward and -1.7 +/- 0.2 in the faintward. The bend corresponds to a mass ~ 10^5 M_{\odot}, only slightly lower than the characteristic mass of globular clusters in the Milky Way (~2x10^5 M_{\odot}). The star clusters of the Antennae appear slightly resolved, with median effective radii of 4 +/- 1 pc, similar to or perhaps slightly larger than those of globular clusters in our Galaxy. However, the radial extents of some of the very young clusters (ages < 10 Myr) are much larger than those of old globular clusters. A combination of the UBVI colors, \Halpha morphology, and GHRS spectra enables us to age-date the clusters in different regions of The Antennae. We find two groups of young star clusters with ages <~ 20Myr and ~100Myr, as well as an intermediate-age group (~500 Myr) and a handful of old globular clusters from the progenitor galaxies. Age estimates derived from GHRS spectroscopy yield 3 +/- 1 Myr for Knot K (just south of the nucleus of NGC 4038) and 7 +/- 1 Myr for Knot S in the Western Loop, in good agreement with ages derived from the UBVI colors. Effective gas-outflow velocities from Knots S and K are estimated to be about 25-30 km/s. However, the measured widths of the interstellar absorption lines suggest dispersion velocities of ~400 km/s along the lines of sight to Knots S and K.Comment: 56 pages, 4 tables and 23 figures, texts in AAS style, to be published in A
