Observation of quark-hadron duality in gamma*-p helicity cross sections
Combining data on unpolarized and polarized inclusive proton structure
functions, we perform the first detailed study of quark-hadron duality in
individual helicity-1/2 and 3/2 virtual photoproduction cross sections. We find
that duality is realized more clearly in the helicity-1/2 channel, with duality
violating corrections < 10% over the entire nucleon resonance region, while
larger, < 20% corrections are found in the helicity-3/2 sector. The results are
in general agreement with quark model expectations, and suggest that data above
the Delta resonance region may be used to constrain both spin-averaged and
spin-dependent parton distributions.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
Precise Extraction of the Induced Polarization in the He-4(e,e(l)(p)over-right-arrow)H-3 Reaction
We measured with unprecedented precision the induced polarization P-y in He-4(e, e(l)(p) over right arrow)H-3 at Q(2) = 0.8 and 1.3 (GeV/c)(2). The induced polarization is indicative of reaction-mechanism effects beyond the impulse approximation. Our results are in agreement with a relativistic distorted-wave impulse approximation calculation but are overestimated by a calculation with strong charge-exchange effects. Our data are used to constrain the strength of the spin-independent charge-exchange term in the latter calculation
Medium Modifications of Hadron Properties and Partonic Processes
Chiral symmetry is one of the most fundamental symmetries in QCD. It is
closely connected to hadron properties in the nuclear medium via the reduction
of the quark condensate , manifesting the partial restoration of
chiral symmetry. To better understand this important issue, a number of
Jefferson Lab experiments over the past decade have focused on understanding
properties of mesons and nucleons in the nuclear medium, often benefiting from
the high polarization and luminosity of the CEBAF accelerator. In particular, a
novel, accurate, polarization transfer measurement technique revealed for the
first time a strong indication that the bound proton electromagnetic form
factors in 4He may be modified compared to those in the vacuum. Second, the
photoproduction of vector mesons on various nuclei has been measured via their
decay to e+e- to study possible in-medium effects on the properties of the rho
meson. In this experiment, no significant mass shift and some broadening
consistent with expected collisional broadening for the rho meson has been
observed, providing tight constraints on model calculations. Finally, processes
involving in-medium parton propagation have been studied. The medium
modifications of the quark fragmentation functions have been extracted with
much higher statistical accuracy than previously possible.Comment: to appear in J. Phys.: Conf. Proc. "New Insights into the Structure

Scaling of the F_2 structure function in nuclei and quark distributions at x>1
We present new data on electron scattering from a range of nuclei taken in
Hall C at Jefferson Lab. For heavy nuclei, we observe a rapid falloff in the
cross section for , which is sensitive to short range contributions to the
nuclear wave-function, and in deep inelastic scattering corresponds to probing
extremely high momentum quarks. This result agrees with higher energy muon
scattering measurements, but is in sharp contrast to neutrino scattering
measurements which suggested a dramatic enhancement in the distribution of the
`super-fast' quarks probed at x>1. The falloff at x>1 is noticeably stronger in
^2H and ^3He, but nearly identical for all heavier nuclei.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to be submitted to physical revie
Transverse momentum dependence of semi-inclusive pion production
Cross sections for semi-inclusive electroproduction of charged pions
() from both proton and deuteron targets were measured for
, GeV, , and GeV. For
GeV, we find the azimuthal dependence to be small, as expected
theoretically. For both and , the dependence from the
deuteron is found to be slightly weaker than from the proton. In the context of
a simple model, this implies that the initial transverse momenta width of
quarks is larger than for quarks and, contrary to expectations, the
transverse momentum width of the favored fragmentation function is larger than
the unfavored one.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures. Fit form changed to include Cahn effect Minor

The Onset of Quark-Hadron Duality in Pion Electroproduction
A large data set of charged-pion electroproduction from both hydrogen and
deuterium targets has been obtained spanning the low-energy residual-mass
region. These data conclusively show the onset of the quark-hadron duality
phenomenon, as predicted for high-energy hadron electroproduction. We construct
several ratios from these data to exhibit the relation of this phenomenon to
the high-energy factorization ansatz of electron-quark scattering and
subsequent quark-to- pion production mechanisms.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, accepted in Phys. Rev. Lett. Tables adde
New measurements of high-momentum nucleons and short-range structures in nuclei
We present new measurements of electron scattering from high-momentum
nucleons in nuclei. These data allow an improved determination of the strength
of two-nucleon correlations for several nuclei, including light nuclei where
clustering effects can, for the first time, be examined. The data also include
the kinematic region where three-nucleon correlations are expected to dominate.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Results from JLab E02-01
