Calculation of the planar supercritical flow over a NASA supercritical profile

    Get PDF
An unsteady finite difference procedure was used to calculate the steady inviscid flow over an 11% thickness ratio NASA supercritical profile of LWP 505 at M sub infinity = 0.80 and alpha = 0. An attempt is made to include the viscous effects using a modified form of Head's entrainment method to calculate the turbulent boundary layer. The attempt to predict the viscous effects using the compressible form of Head's integral method with a modified auxiliary equation for the form factors was unsatisfactory. Though a reasonably separation bubble was established on the lower surface, a grossly exaggerated displacement effect resulted downstream of the shock on the upper surface. There clearly is substantial further effort required to evolve a satisfactory boundary layer procedure, which must then be coupled in a still unproven manner with the inviscid procedure

Steady inviscid transonic flows over planar airfoils: A search for a simplified procedure

    Get PDF
A finite difference procedure based upon a system of unsteady equations in proper conservation form with either exact or small disturbance steady terms is used to calculate the steady flows over several classes of airfoils. The airfoil condition is fulfilled on a slab whose upstream extremity is a semi-circle overlaying the airfoil leading edge circle. The limitations of the small disturbance equations are demonstrated in an extreme example of a blunt-nosed, aft-cambered airfoil. The necessity of using the equations in proper conservation form to capture the shock properly is stressed. Ability of the steady relaxation procedures to capture the shock is briefly examined

Is Misoprostol Cost-effective in the Prevention of Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug—Induced Gastropathy in Patients With Chronic Arthritis?

    Get PDF
Whether misoprostol, a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analogue, should be routinely prescribed along with nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) to prevent gastric damage is of great clinical importance and has profound cost implications. No consensus exists on whether misoprostol cotherapy results in a cost-saving, is cost-effective, or is costly. The different conclusions reached by five economic evaluations of misoprostol can be explained solely by the assumed absolute risk reduction of symptomatic ulcer, which was more than seven times greater in the studies that concluded that misoprostol was cost-effective than in a study that concluded misoprostol to be costly. Since no study has directly shown the effectiveness of misoprostol cotherapy in preventing clinically significant ulcer disease (ie, hemorrhage and preforation), it is impossible to judge which assumptions are most appropriate. The absence of firm data on the rate of NSAID-induced gastric ulcers reduced by misoprostol makes it impossible to conclude whether it is cost-effective in patients with chronic arthritis who use NSAIDS

In vivo contact stresses at the radiocarpal joint using a finite element method of the complete wrist joint

    Get PDF
A small number of cadaveric studies have been carried out looking at the force transmission through the radiocarpal joint. In this study subject specific finite element models were created of the whole wrist joint using measured biomechanical data to capture the forces acting on the wrist with the hand generating a maximum gripping force

Does Foreign Direct Investment Promote Development?

    Get PDF
What is the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on development? The answer is important for the lives of millions--if not billions--of workers, families, and communities in the developing world. The answer is crucial for policymakers in developing and developed countries, and in multilateral agencies. This volume gathers together the cutting edge of new research on FDI and host country economic performance and presents the most sophisticated critiques of current and past inquiries. It probes the limits of what can be determined from available evidence and from innovative investigative techniques. In addition, the book presents new results, concludes with an analysis of the implications for contemporary policy debates, and proposeds new avenues for future research.

Well controlled in length and highly aligned ZnO nanorods were grown on the gold-coated glass substrate by hydrothermal growth method. ZnO nanorods were functionalised with selective thallium (I) ion ionophore dibenzyldiaza-18-crown-6 (DBzDA18C6). The thallium ion sensor showed wide linear potentiometric response to thallium (I) ion concentrations ( M to  M) with high sensitivity of 36.87 ± 1.49 mV/decade. Moreover, thallium (I) ion demonstrated fast response time of less than 5 s, high selectivity, reproducibility, storage stability, and negligible response to common interferents. The proposed thallium (I) ion-sensor electrode was also used as an indicator electrode in the potentiometric titration, and it has shown good stoichiometric response for the determination of thallium (I) ion
