    Gleason Score As Predictor Of Clinicopathologic Findings And Biochemical (psa) Progression Following Radical Prostatectomy.

    There is evidence showing that Gleason grading of prostatic adenocarcinoma is one of the most powerful predictors of biological behavior and one of the most influential factors used to determine treatment for prostate cancer. The aim of the current study was to compare the Gleason score for needle biopsy to the Gleason score for the correspondent surgical specimen, find any possible difference in the biochemical (PSA) progression following surgery in upgraded cases, correlate Gleason score in the specimens to several clinicopathologic variables, and compare outcomes between patients with low-grade vs. high-grade Gleason and Gleason scores 3+4 vs. 4+3. The study population consisted of 200 consecutive patients submitted to radical prostatectomy. Biochemical progression was defined as PSA > or = 0.2 ng/mL. Time to PSA progression was studied using the Kaplan-Meier product-limit analysis. In 47.1% of the cases, there was an exact correlation and 40.6% of cases were underestimated in the biopsies. Half of the tumors graded Gleason 6 at biopsy were Gleason score 7 at surgery. These upgraded tumors had outcomes similar to tumors with Gleason score 7 in both biopsy and surgery. There was a positive correlation of high-grade Gleason score in the surgical specimens to higher preoperative PSA, more extensive tumors, positive margins and more advanced pathologic staging. Tumors with a Gleason score > or = 7 have lower PSA progression-free survival vs. Gleason scores < 7. In this series, there was no significant difference when comparing Gleason scores of 3+4 vs. 4+3. The findings support the importance of Gleason grading for nomograms, which are used by clinicians to counsel individual patients and help them make important decisions regarding their disease.3423-

    Morphological and Postural changes in the foot during pregnancy and puerperium : a longitudinal study

    The aim of this study is to observe the morphological and postural changes to the foot that take place during pregnancy and the puerperium. Method: In this descriptive, observational, longitudinal study, we analysed 23 pregnant women, with particular attention to morphological and postural aspects of the foot, at three time points during and after pregnancy: in weeks 9-13 of gestation, weeks 32-35 of gestation and weeks 4-6 after delivery. The parameters considered were changes in foot length, the Foot Posture Index (FPI) and the Hernández Corvo Index, which were analysed using a pedigraph and taking into account the Body Mass Index (BMI). The same procedure was conducted in each review. Results: The statistical analyses obtained for each foot did not differ significantly between the three measurement times. A pronator-type footprint was most frequently observed during the third trimester of pregnancy; it was predominantly neutral during the postpartum period. Statistically significant differences between the measurement times were obtained in the right foot for cavus vs. neutral foot type (between the first and third trimesters and also between the first trimester and the puerperium) (in both cases, p < 0.0001). Conclusions: Foot length increases in the third trimester and returns to normal in the puerperium. According to FPI findings, the third trimester of pregnancy is characterised by pronation, while the posture returns to neutrality during the postpartum period. During pregnancy, the plantar arch flattens, and this persists during the puerperium. The incidence of cavus foot increases significantly in the third trimester and in the puerperium

Data from global plot networks have transformed our knowledge of forests’ diversity, function, contribution to global biogeochemical cycles, and sensitivity to climate change. Monitoring has thus far been concentrated in rain forests. Despite increasing appreciation of their threatened status, biodiversity, and importance to the global carbon cycle, monitoring in tropical dry forests is still in its infancy. We provide a protocol for permanent monitoring plots in tropical dry forests.     Influência das adubações nitrogenada e orgânica no tomateiro sobre os teores de N-NO3- e N-NH4+ no perfil do solo

    Os teores de N-NO3-, N-NH4+ e N mineral (N-NO3- + N-NH4+), em solo cultivado com tomateiro em resposta a doses de nitrogênio e a adubação orgânica, foram avaliados em um experimento de campo conduzido na época de outono/primavera (mai/99 a out/99) e instalado na Horta do Fundão da Universidade Federal de Viçosa, em solo da classe Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo Câmbico. As doses de N aplicadas foram 0, 110, 220, 440 e 880 kg ha-1 e as de matéria orgânica, na forma de esterco bovino curtido, foram 0 e 8 t ha-1, em base seca. O experimento seguiu o delineamento em blocos ao acaso, no arranjo fatorial 5x2, com quatro repetições. Foram feitas amostragens de solo nas profundidades de 0-20, 20-40 e 40-60 cm ao final do ciclo da planta. Em todas as profundidades e nas duas doses de matéria orgânica, os teores de N-NO3- e de N-NH4+ aumentaram com o incremento nas doses de N, sendo que os teores de N-NO3- foram mais influenciados por este aumento que os de N-NH4+. As respostas apresentadas pelos teores de N mineral foram similares àquelas apresentadas pelos teores de N-NO3-
