Anisotropic Anomalous Diffusion assessed in the human brain by scalar invariant indices
A new method to investigate anomalous diffusion in human brain is proposed.
The method has been inspired by both the stretched-exponential model proposed
by Hall and Barrick (HB) and DTI. Quantities extracted using HB method were
able to discriminate different cerebral tissues on the basis of their
complexity, expressed by the stretching exponent gamma and of the anisotropy of
gamma across different directions. Nevertheless, these quantities were not
defined as scalar invariants like mean diffusivity and fractional anisotropy,
which are eigenvalues of the diffusion tensor. We hypotesize instead that the
signal may be espressed as a simple stretched-exponential only along the
principal axes of diffusion, while in a generic direction the signal is modeled
as a combination of three different stretched-exponentials. In this way, we
derived indices to quantify both the tissue anomalous diffusion and its
anisotropy, independently of the reference frame of the experiment. We tested
and compare our new method with DTI and HB approaches applying them to 10
healty subjects brain at 3T. Our experimental results show that our parameters
are highly correlated to intrinsic local geometry when compared to HB indices.
Moreover, they offer a different kind of contrast when compared to DTI outputs.
Specifically, our indices show a higher capability to discriminate among
different areas of the corpus callosum, which are known to be associated to
different axonal densities.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, 2 table
Ultrafast Transient Infrared Spectroscopy of Photoreceptors with Polarizable QM/MM Dynamics
Ultrafast transient infrared (TRIR) spectroscopy is widely used to measure the excitation-induced structural changes of protein-bound chromophores. Here, we design a novel and general strategy to compute TRIR spectra of photoreceptors by combining ÎŒs-long MM molecular dynamics with ps-long QM/AMOEBA Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) trajectories for both ground and excited electronic states. As a proof of concept, the strategy is here applied to AppA, a blue-light-utilizing flavin (BLUF) protein, found in bacteria. We first analyzed the short-time evolution of the embedded flavin upon excitation revealing that its dynamic Stokes shift is ultrafast and mainly driven by the internal reorganization of the chromophore. A different normal-mode representation was needed to describe ground- and excited-state IR spectra. In this way, we could assign all of the bands observed in the measured transient spectrum. In particular, we could characterize the flavin isoalloxazine-ring region of the spectrum, for which a full and clear description was missing
Improved Cu2O/AZO Heterojunction by Inserting a Thin ZnO Interlayer Grown by Pulsed Laser Deposition
Cu2O/ZnO:Al (AZO) and Cu2O/ZnO/AZO heterojunctions have been deposited on glass substrates by a unique three-step pulsed laser deposition process. The structural, optical, and electrical properties of the oxide films were investigated before their implementation in the final device. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the materials were highly crystallized along the c-axis. All films were highly transparent in the visible region with enhanced electrical properties. Atomic force and scanning electron microscopies showed that the insertion of a ZnO layer between the Cu2O and AZO films in the heterojunction enhanced the average grain size and surface roughness. The heterojunctions exhibited remarkable diode behavior and good rectifying character with low leakage current under reverse bias. The presence of the ZnO interlayer film significantly reduced the parasitic and leakage currents across the barrier, improved the quality of the heterostructure, made the energy band between AZO and Cu2O layers smoother, and eliminated the possibility of interface recombination, leading to much longer electron lifetime
Testosterone Enanthate: An In Vitro Study of the Effects Triggered in MG-63 Cells
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the androgenic hormone testosterone enanthate (TE) on human MG-63 cells. MG-63 were cultured for 24 h in the presence of TE at increasing concentrations to assess its lethal dose. Therefore, the suitable concentration for a prolonged use of TE in vitro was assessed by viability assay over 9 days. Finally, MG-63 were exposed to TE for 14 days and assayed for differentiation by qPCR and Alizarin Red S staining. TE in the amount of 100 ”M resulted as the maximum dose tolerated by MG-63 cells after 24 h. However, a prolonged exposure in culture TE in the amount of 100 ”M showed a cytostatic effect on cell proliferation. On the contrary, TE 10 ”M was tolerated by the cells and did not boost cell proliferation, but did enhance new bone formation, as revealed by COL1A1, ALPL, BGLAP, and IBSP gene expression after 3, 7, and 14 days, and calcium deposition by Alizarin Red S staining after 14 days. Based on the current study, 10 ”M is the critical dose of TE that should be used in vitro to support bone differentiation of MG-63 cells
Trapping cold atoms using surface-grown carbon nanotubes
We present a feasibility study for loading cold atomic clouds into magnetic
traps created by single-wall carbon nanotubes grown directly onto dielectric
surfaces. We show that atoms may be captured for experimentally sustainable
nanotube currents, generating trapped clouds whose densities and lifetimes are
sufficient to enable detection by simple imaging methods. This opens the way
for a novel type of conductor to be used in atomchips, enabling atom trapping
at sub-micron distances, with implications for both fundamental studies and for
technological applications
Preparation of human primary macrophages to study the polarization from monocyte-derived macrophages to pro- or anti-inflammatory macrophages at biomaterial interface in vitro
Background/purpose: Testing of dental materials when in contact with innate immune cells has been so far hindered by the lack of proper in vitro models. Human primary monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs) would be an excellent option to this aim. However, the inability to detach them from the tissue culture plates contrast the possibility to culture them on biomaterials. The goal of the present work is to present and validate an innovative protocol to obtain MDMs from peripheral blood monocytes, and to reseed them in contact with biomaterials without altering their viability and phenotype. Materials and methods: We differentiated MDMs on ultra-low attachment tissue culture plastics and recovered them with specific detachment solution in order to be reseeded on a secondary substrate. Therefore, using biological assays (RT-PCR, Western blot, and immunofluorescence) we compared their phenotype to MDMs differentiated on standard culture plates. Results: Transferred MDMs keep their differentiated M0 resting state, as well as the ability to be polarized into M1 (pro-inflammatory) or M2 (anti-inflammatory) macrophages. Conclusion: These data provide the dental material research community the unprecedented possibility to investigate the immunomodulatory properties of biomaterials for dental application
Stability and Longevity in the Publication Careers of U.S. Doctorate Recipients
Since the 1950s, the number of doctorate recipients has risen dramatically in the United States. In this paper, we investigate whether the longevity of doctorate recipients' publication careers has changed. This is achieved by matching 1951-2010 doctorate recipients with rare names in astrophysics, chemistry, economics, genetics and psychology in the dissertation database ProQuest to their publications in the publication database Web of Science. Our study shows that pre-PhD publication careers have changed: the median year of first publication has shifted from after the PhD to several years before PhD in most of the studied fields. In contrast, post-PhD publication career spans have not changed much in most fields. The share of doctorate recipients who have published for more than twenty years has remained stable over time; the shares of doctorate recipients publishing for shorter periods also remained almost unchanged. Thus, though there have been changes in pre-PhD publication careers, post-PhD career spans remained quite stable.Merit, Expertise and Measuremen
3D printed masks for powders and viruses safety protection using food grade polymers: Empirical tests
The production of 3D printed safety protection devices (SPD) requires particular attention to the material selection and to the evaluation of mechanical resistance, biological safety and surface roughness related to the accumulation of bacteria and viruses. We explored the possibility to adopt additive manufacturing technologies for the production of respirator masks, responding to the sudden demand of SPDs caused by the emergency scenario of the pandemic spread of SARSâCOVâ 2. In this study, we developed different prototypes of masks, exclusively applying basic additive manufacturing technologies like fused deposition modeling (FDM) and dropletâbased precision extrusion deposition (dbâPED) to common food packaging materials. We analyzed the resulting mechanical characteristics, biological safety (cell adhesion and viability), surface roughness and resistance to dissolution, before and after the cleaning and disinfection phases. We showed that masks 3D printed with homeâgrade printing equipment have similar performances compared to the industrialâgrade ones, and furthermore we obtained a perfect face fit by customizing their shape. Finally, we developed novel approaches to the additive manufacturing postâprocessing phases essential to assure human safety in the production of 3D printed custom medical devices
The Machine Learning Landscape of Top Taggers
Based on the established task of identifying boosted, hadronically decaying
top quarks, we compare a wide range of modern machine learning approaches.
Unlike most established methods they rely on low-level input, for instance
calorimeter output. While their network architectures are vastly different,
their performance is comparatively similar. In general, we find that these new
approaches are extremely powerful and great fun.Comment: Yet another tagger included
