Cannibalism as a life boat mechanism
Under certain conditions a cannibalistic population can survive when food for the adults is too scarce to support a non-cannibalistic population. Cannibalism can have this lifeboat effect if (i) the juveniles feed on a resource inaccessible to the adults; and (ii) the adults are cannibalistic and thus incorporate indirectly the inaccessible resource. Using a simple model we conclude that the mechanism works when, at low population densities, the average yield, in terms of new offspring, due to the energy provided by one cannibalized juvenile is larger than one
Comorbidity and Quality of Life in Adults with Hair Pulling Disorder
Hair pulling disorder (HPD; trichotillomania) is thought to be associated with significant psychiatric comorbidity and functional impairment. However, few methodologically rigorous studies of HPD have been conducted, rendering such conclusions tenuous. The following study examined comorbidity and psychosocial functioning in a well-characterized sample of adults with HPD (N=85) who met DSM-IV criteria, had at least moderate hair pulling severity, and participated in a clinical trial. Results revealed that 38.8% of individuals with HPD had another current psychiatric diagnosis and 78.8% had another lifetime (present and/or past) psychiatric diagnosis. Specifically, HPD showed substantial overlap with depressive, anxiety, addictive, and other body-focused repetitive behavior disorders. The relationships between certain comorbidity patterns, hair pulling severity, current mood and anxiety symptoms, and quality of life were also examined. Results showed that current depressive symptoms were the only predictor of quality of life deficits. Implications of these findings for the conceptualization and treatment of HPD are discussed
Atomic dynamics in evaporative cooling of trapped alkali atoms in strong magnetic fields
We investigate how the nonlinearity of the Zeeman shift for strong magnetic
fields affects the dynamics of rf field induced evaporative cooling in magnetic
traps. We demonstrate for the 87-Rb and 23-Na F=2 trapping states with wave
packet simulations how the cooling stops when the rf field frequency goes below
a certain limit (for the 85-Rb F=2 trapping state the problem does not appear).
We examine the applicability of semiclassical models for the strong field case
as an extension of our previous work [Phys. Rev. A 58, 3983 (1998)]. Our
results verify many of the aspects observed in a recent Rb experiment

Accessing directly the properties of fundamental scalars in the confinement and Higgs phase
The properties of elementary particles are encoded in their respective
propagators and interaction vertices. For a SU(2) gauge theory coupled to a
doublet of fundamental complex scalars these propagators are determined in both
the Higgs phase and the confinement phase and compared to the Yang-Mills case,
using lattice gauge theory. Since the propagators are gauge-dependent, this is
done in the Landau limit of 't Hooft gauge, permitting to also determine the
ghost propagator. It is found that neither the gauge boson nor the scalar
differ qualitatively in the different cases. In particular, the gauge boson
acquires a screening mass, and the scalar's screening mass is larger than the
renormalized mass. Only the ghost propagator shows a significant change.
Furthermore, indications are found that the consequences of the residual
non-perturbative gauge freedom due to Gribov copies could be different in the

The judgment of forseti: economic utility for dynamic heap sizing of multiple runtimes
We introduce the Forseti system, which is a principled approach
for holistic memory management. It permits a sysadmin
to specify the total physical memory resource that may
be shared between all concurrent virtual machines on a physical
node. Forseti models the heap size versus application
throughput for each virtual machine, and seeks to maximize
the combined throughput of the set of VMs based on concepts
from economic utility theory. We evaluate the Forseti system
using a standard Java managed runtime, i.e. OpenJDK. Our
results demonstrate that Forseti enables dramatic reductions
(up to 5x) in heap footprint without compromising application
execution times
On the gauge boson's properties in a candidate technicolor theory
The technicolor scenario replaces the Higgs sector of the standard model with
a strongly interacting sector. One candidate for a realization of such a sector
is two-technicolor Yang-Mills theory coupled to two degenerate flavors of
adjoint, massless techniquarks. Using lattice gauge theory the properties of
the technigluons in this scenario are investigated as a function of the
techniquark mass towards the massless limit. For that purpose the minimal
Landau gauge two-point and three-point correlation functions are determined,
including a detailed systematic error analysis. The results are, within the
relatively large systematic uncertainties, compatible with a behavior very
similar to QCD at finite techniquark mass. However, the limit of massless
techniquarks exhibits features which could be compatible with a

Post-AGB stars with hot circumstellar dust: binarity of the low-amplitude pulsators
While the first binary post-AGB stars were serendipitously discovered, the
distinct characteristics of their Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) allowed us
to launch a more systematic search for binaries. We selected post-AGB objects
which show a broad dust excess often starting already at H or K, pointing to
the presence of a gravitationally bound dusty disc in the system. We started a
very extensive multi-wavelength study of those systems and here we report on
our radial velocity and photometric monitoring results for six stars of early F
type, which are pulsators of small amplitude. To determine the radial velocity
of low signal-to-noise time-series, we constructed dedicated auto-correlation
masks. The radial velocity variations were subjected to detailed analysis to
differentiate between pulsational variability and variability due to orbital
motion. Finally orbital minimalisation was performed to constrain the orbital
elements. All of the six objects are binaries, with orbital periods ranging
from 120 to 1800 days. Five systems have non-circular orbits. The mass
functions range from 0.004 to 0.57 solar mass and the companions are likely
unevolved objects of (very) low initial mass. We argue that these binaries must
have been subject to severe binary interaction when the primary was a cool
supergiant. Although the origin of the circumstellar disc is not well
understood, the disc is generally believed to be formed during this strong
interaction phase. The eccentric orbits of these highly evolved objects remain
poorly understood. With the measured orbits and mass functions we conclude that
the circumbinary discs seem to have a major impact on the evolution of a

The Generation of Successive Unmarked Mutations and Chromosomal Insertion of Heterologous Genes in Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae Using Natural Transformation
We have developed a simple method of generating scarless, unmarked mutations in Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae by exploiting the ability of this bacterium to undergo natural transformation, and with no need to introduce plasmids encoding recombinases or resolvases. This method involves two successive rounds of natural transformation using linear DNA: the first introduces a cassette carrying cat (which allows selection by chloramphenicol) and sacB (which allows counter-selection using sucrose) flanked by sequences to either side of the target gene; the second transformation utilises the flanking sequences ligated directly to each other in order to remove the cat-sacB cassette. In order to ensure efficient uptake of the target DNA during transformation, A. pleuropneumoniae uptake sequences are added into the constructs used in both rounds of transformation. This method can be used to generate multiple successive deletions and can also be used to introduce targeted point mutations or insertions of heterologous genes into the A. pleuropneumoniae chromosome for development of live attenuated vaccine strains. So far, we have applied this method to highly transformable isolates of serovars 8 (MIDG2331), which is the most prevalent in the UK, and 15 (HS143). By screening clinical isolates of other serovars, it should be possible to identify other amenable strains
Measurement of Strange Quark Contributions to the Nucleon's Form Factors at Q^2=0.230 (GeV/c)^2
We report on a measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in the
scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons on unpolarized protons at a
of 0.230 (GeV/c)^2 and a scattering angle of \theta_e = 30^o - 40^o.
Using a large acceptance fast PbF_2 calorimeter with a solid angle of
\Delta\Omega = 0.62 sr the A4 experiment is the first parity violation
experiment to count individual scattering events. The measured asymmetry is
A_{phys} =(-5.44 +- 0.54_{stat} +- 0.27_{\rm sys}) 10^{-6}. The Standard Model
expectation assuming no strangeness contributions to the vector form factors is
. The difference is a direct measurement of the
strangeness contribution to the vector form factors of the proton. The
extracted value is G^s_E + 0.225 G^s_M = 0.039 +- 0.034 or F^s_1 + 0.130 F^s_2
