Energy Firms in Emerging Markets: Systemic Risk and Diversification Opportunities

Previous studies in energy stock markets have analyzed market connectedness using aggregate indexes and focusing on developed markets. We depart from the extant literature and we focus our attention on companies listed on emerging stock markets and examine connectedness from the firm’s perspective. Using a two-step approach, we remove the common global factors from energy stock returns and estimate the network of global energy stocks in emerging markets. We show that idiosyncratic components are highly relevant for our understanding of risk transmission in energy markets. Moreover, we offer precise diversification alternatives and identify the most systemically important firms and countries

Thepresentthesisentitled""ImpactofForeignDirectInvestmentonthelongtermeconomicgrowthofthePeruvianeconomyintheperiod19802021hadtheobjectiveofdeterminingtheimpactofForeignDirectInvestmentonthelongtermeconomicgrowthofthePeruvianeconomy.Theresearchisexplanatorycorrelationalandnonexperimental,sinceitisintendedtoserveassupportforpolicies.ThevariablesusedareGDPandFDI.UsinghistoricaldatafromtheCentralReserveBankofPeru(BCRP)andstatisticalseriesfromtheWorldBank(WB).Basedonthetheorythatforeigndirectinvestmentimproveseconomicgrowth.AnOrdinaryLeastSquaresmodelwithweightswasestimated,afterwhichitcanbeobservedthattheindependentvariablesexplain98.78dependentvariable.TheresultsoftheeconometricmodelindicatethatforeigndirectinvestmenthadapositiveimpactonPeruseconomicgrowthintheperiod19802021,forevery1 de la IED, el crecimiento económico en el Perú aumenta en S/.4.82. The research is explanatory correlational and non-experimental, since it is intended to serve as support for policies. The variables used are GDP and FDI. Using historical data from the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP) and statistical series from the World Bank (WB). Based on the theory that foreign direct investment improves economic growth. An Ordinary Least Squares model with weights was estimated, after which it can be observed that the independent variables explain 98.78% of the dependent variable. The results of the econometric model indicate that foreign direct investment had a positive impact on Peru's economic growth in the period 1980-2021, for every 1 increase in FDI, economic growth in Peru increases by S/. 4.82. With this result we corroborate that the higher the FDI, the higher the economic growth, but it must be properly managed.Tesi

A new species of Enyalioides (Iguanidae: Hoplocercinae) from southwestern Ecuador

We describe a new species of Enyalioides from lowland cloud forests in southwestern Ecuador. This represents the third species in the genus known to occur west of the Andes in South America; the other two species are E. heterolepis and E. oshaughnessyi. Among other characters, the new species can be distinguished from other members in the genus by having small, keeled, paravertebrals; a series of skin folds on the lateral aspects of body and neck; size-homogeneous scales on body and limbs; distinct caudal segments; and an extensive dark patch on the gular region of adult males. Morphological similarity suggests that the new species, which we call E. touzeti, is closely related to E. oshaughnessyi.

Estimation of the optimum speed to minimize the driver stress based on the previous behavior

Proceedings of 7th International Symposium on Ambient Intelligence (ISAmI 2016), Seville, Spain on June 1st–3rdStress is one of the most important factors in car accidents. When the driver is in this mental state, their skills and abilities are reduced. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to predict stress level on a road. Prediction model is based on deep learning. The stress level estimation considers the previous driver's driving behavior before reaching the road section, the road state (weather and traffic), and the previous driving made by the driver. We employ this algorithm to build a speed assistant. The solution provides an optimum average speed for each road stage that minimizes the stress. Validation experiment has been conducted using five different datasets with 100 samples. The proposal is able to predict the stress level given the average speed by 84.20% on average. The system reduces the heart rate (15.22%) and the aggressiveness of driving. The proposed solution is implemented on Android mobile devices and uses a heart rate chest strap. The research leading to these results has received funding from the “HERMES-SMART DRIVER/CITIZEN” projects TIN2013-46801-C4-2-R /1-R funded by the Spanish MINECO, from the grant PRX15/00036 from the Ministerio de Educación Cultura y Deporte

Stress is one of the most important factors in traffic accidents. When the driver is in this mental state, their skills and abilities are reduced. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to estimate the optimal speed to minimize stress levels on upcoming road segments when driving. The prediction model is based on deep learning. The stress level estimation considers the previous driver's driving behavior before reaching the road section to be assessed, the road state (weather and traffic), and the previous drives made by the driver. We use this algorithm to build a speed assistant. The solution provides an optimum average speed for each road segment that minimizes the stress. A validation experiment has been conducted in a real setting using two different types of vehicles. The proposal is able to predict the stress levels given the average speed by 84.20% on average. On the other hand, the speed assistant reduces the stress levels (estimated from the driver’s heart rate signal) and the aggressiveness of driving regardless of the vehicle type. The proposed solution is implemented on Android mobile devices and uses a heart rate chest strap

A low-molecular weight chromium-containing fraction of the material resulting from dichromate reduction by bovine liver homogenate was investigated by NMR and ES-MS. The ES-MS spectrum showed a readily detectable peak at m/z 786.1. The same molecular weight reasonably agreed with the relatively low diffusion coefficient measured by NMR-DOSY experiments on the main species observed in the 1H NMR spectrum. At least two downfield shifted and broad paramagnetic signals were apparent in the 1H NMR spectrum. Temperature dependence of chemical shift was exploited in order to estimate the diamagnetic shift of the signals in the diamagnetic region of the spectrum. 2D TOCSY, NOESY, COSY and 1H-13C HMQC spectra revealed the presence of aromatic protons (which were assigned as His residues), Gly and some other short chain amino-acids. Combinations of the molecular masses of such components together with acetate (which is present in the solution) and chromium atoms allowed a tentative proposal of a model for the compound

Discovery of distant RR Lyrae stars in the Milky Way using DECam

We report the discovery of distant RR Lyrae stars, including the most distant known in the Milky Way, using data taken in the gg-band with the Dark Energy Camera as part of the High cadence Transient Survey (HiTS; 2014 campaign). We detect a total of 173 RR Lyrae stars over a ~120 deg^2 area, including both known RR Lyrae and new detections. The heliocentric distances d_H of the full sample range from 9 to >200 kpc, with 18 of them beyond 90 kpc. We identify three sub-groups of RR Lyrae as members of known systems: the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy, for which we report 46 new discoveries, and the ultra-faint dwarf galaxies Leo IV and Leo V. Following an MCMC methodology, we fit spherical and ellipsoidal profiles of the form rho(R) ~ R^n to the radial density distribution of RR Lyrae in the Galactic halo. The best fit corresponds to the spherical case, for which we obtain a simple power-law index of n=-4.17^{+0.18}_{-0.20}, consistent with recent studies made with samples covering shorter distances. The pulsational properties of the outermost RR Lyrae in the sample (d_H>90 kpc) differ from the ones in the halo population at closer distances. The distribution of the stars in a Period-Amplitude diagram suggest they belong to Oosterhoff-intermediate or Oosterhoff II groups, similar to what is found in the ultra-faint dwarf satellites around the Milky Way. The new distant stars discovered represent an important addition to the few existing tracers of the Milky Way potential in the outer halo.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

The authors had carried through the survey of cases of legal medical identification, with suspicion of being determined person, analyzed for the Nucleus of Anthropology of the Legal Medical Institute of the State of São Paulo, in the period of January of 1990 the December of 2000. The survey was carried through the legal findings medical with the objective to get given on this type of skill, practically inexistent in literature, as well as verifying the factors that had influenced in the identification or not of this type of case. Results: the total number of cases was of 169, being that 125 (73,06%) were bodies in decomposition or skeletons and 44 (26,03%) carbonized. In relation to the cause of death in 93 (55,35%) it was not possible to establish the death cause and in 39 (23,21%) the death occurred due to brain injury. The identification resulted positive in 81 cases (47,9%), using the odontologic methods in 39 cases (60%), genetic in 13 (20%), anthropologic in 9 (13,84%) and fingerprints in 4 cases (6,15%). In 88 cases (52,07%) it was not possible conclusive result, attributing this to it the absence of confrontation elements, which were present in 82 cases (93,18%). Conclusion: the legal medical identification depends on confrontation elements, supplied, mainly for the familiar ones, without which it is not possible to get a positive result in the skill of legal medical identification
