Justification of Sexual Reproduction by Modified Penna Model of Ageing
We generalize the standard Penna bit-string model of biological ageing by
assuming that each deleterious mutation diminishes the survival probability in
every time interval by a small percentage. This effect is added to the usual
lethal but age-dependent effect of the same mutation. We then find strong
advantages or disadvantages of sexual reproduction (with males and females)

Simulated emergence of cyclic sexual-asexual reproduction
Motivated by the cyclic pattern of reproductive regimes observed in some
species of green flies (``{\it aphids}''), we simulate the evolution of a
population enduring harsh seasonal conditions for survival. The reproductive
regime of each female is also seasonal in principle and genetically acquired,
and can mutate for each newborn with some small probability. The results show a
sharp transition at a critical value of the survival probability in the winter,
between a reproductive regime in the fall that is predominantly sexual, for low

13CO2 recovery fraction in expired air of septic patients under mechanical ventilation
The continuous intravenous administration of isotopic bicarbonate (NaH13CO2) has been used for the determination of the retention of the 13CO2 fraction or the 13CO2 recovered in expired air. This determination is important for the calculation of substrate oxidation. The aim of the present study was to evaluate, in critically ill patients with sepsis under mechanical ventilation, the 13CO2 recovery fraction in expired air after continuous intravenous infusion of NaH13CO2 (3.8 µmol/kg diluted in 0.9% saline in ddH2O). A prospective study was conducted on 10 patients with septic shock between the second and fifth day of sepsis evolution (APACHE II, 25.9 ± 7.4). Initially, baseline CO2 was collected and indirect calorimetry was also performed. A primer of 5 mL NaH13CO2 was administered followed by continuous infusion of 5 mL/h for 6 h. Six CO2 production (VCO2) measurements (30 min each) were made with a portable metabolic cart connected to a respirator and hourly samples of expired air were obtained using a 750-mL gas collecting bag attached to the outlet of the respirator. 13CO2 enrichment in expired air was determined with a mass spectrometer. The patients presented a mean value of VCO2 of 182 ± 52 mL/min during the steady-state phase. The mean recovery fraction was 0.68 ± 0.06%, which is less than that reported in the literature (0.82 ± 0.03%). This suggests that the 13CO2 recovery fraction in septic patients following enteral feeding is incomplete, indicating retention of 13CO2 in the organism. Selection of strawberry cultivars with tolerance to Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae) and high yield under different managements.
Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) is considered the main pest of strawberry. Several factors can favor its development, among them the genotype susceptibility and cropping system. The aims of this study were to evaluate the agronomic performance of strawberry cultivars under different managements and to identify strawberry cultivars that meet tolerance to T. urticae and high fruit yield. Thirteen cultivars of strawberry ('Albion', 'Aleluia', 'Aromas', 'Camarosa', 'Camino Real', 'Campinas', 'Diamante', 'Dover', 'Festival', 'Seascape', 'Toyonoka', 'Tudla', and 'Ventana') under three managements (open field, low tunnel, and high tunnel) were evaluated. The T. urticae attack to different cultivars was influenced by managements, being low tunnel the one that provided higher infestations in the most evaluated cultivars. 'Camarosa' was the cultivar with the lower incidence of pest and 'Dover' had the higher infestation. The genotype most suitable for growing under different managements is the 'Festival' genotype, since it meets tolerance to T. urticae, high fruit yield, and phenotypic stability
Phase transition in a mean-field model for sympatric speciation
We introduce an analytical model for population dynamics with intra-specific
competition, mutation and assortative mating as basic ingredients. The set of
equations that describes the time evolution of population size in a mean-field
approximation may be decoupled. We find a phase transition leading to sympatric
speciation as a parameter that quantifies competition strength is varied. This
transition, previously found in a computational model, occurs to be of first

Fragmentation Experiment and Model for Falling Mercury Drops
The experiment consists of counting and measuring the size of the many
fragments observed after the fall of a mercury drop on the floor. The size
distribution follows a power-law for large enough fragments. We address the
question of a possible crossover to a second, different power-law for small
enough fragments. Two series of experiments were performed. The first uses a
traditional film photographic camera, and the picture is later treated on a
computer in order to count the fragments and classify them according to their
sizes. The second uses a modern digital camera. The first approach has the
advantage of a better resolution for small fragment sizes. The second, although
with a poorer size resolution, is more reliable concerning the counting of all
fragments up to its resolution limit. Both together clearly indicate the real
existence of the quoted crossover.
The model treats the system microscopically during the tiny time interval
when the initial drop collides with the floor. The drop is modelled by a
connected cluster of Ising spins pointing up (mercury) surrounded by Ising
spins pointing down (air). The Ising coupling which tends to keep the spins
segregated represents the surface tension. Initially the cluster carries an
extra energy equally shared among all its spins, corresponding to the coherent
kinetic energy due to the fall. Each spin which touches the floor loses its
extra energy transformed into a thermal, incoherent energy represented by a
temperature used then to follow the dynamics through Monte Carlo simulations.
Whenever a small piece becomes disconnected from the big cluster, it is
considered a fragment, and counted. The results also indicate the existence of
the quoted crossover in the fragment-size distribution.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
An array of fabry-perot optical-channels for biological fluids analysis
This paper describes a biosystem (biological system) used to measure the concentration of biochemical substances in urine, serum,
plasma or cerebrospinal fluid. Rather than just one channel, it comprises 16 optical-channels that enable the measurement of the concentration
of 16 different biochemical substances. An array of 16 optical filters based on Fabry-Perot thin-films optical resonators has
been designed. Each optical-channel is sensitive in a single wavelength with a full-width-half-maximum (FWHM) of 7 nm. The filter
fabrication requires only four masks, used with different etch time. A commercially available band-pass optical filter with a band-pass
wavelength in 450–650 nm is used. The biosystem requires only a white light source for illumination due the use of selective optical

Biological microsystem for measuring uric acid in biological fluids
This paper describes a biological microsystem (bio-system) for measuring uric acid concentration in serum, plasma or urine. Its operation is based on optical absorption in a well-defined part of the visible spectrum. The bio-system is composed by two dies: one is fabricated in polystyrene and contains the microchannels and the other is fabricated in a CMOS standard process and contains the photodetector and
readout electronics. The uric acid concentration is measured by using a mixture of 14µl of infinity™ uric acid reagent with 0.25µl of
sample. The achieved sensitivity is 0.33 mg/dl (±0.6% of the value in urine of a healthy person), with a 1mm lightpath. Using an optical
absorption method, a maximum peak at wavelength λ = 494 nm, is detected. This bio-system can be included in the group of low-cost

On slip pulses at a sheared frictional viscoelastic/ non deformable interface
We study the possibility for a semi-infinite block of linear viscoelastic
material, in homogeneous frictional contact with a non-deformable one, to slide
under shear via a periodic set of ``self-healing pulses'', i.e. a set of
drifting slip regions separated by stick ones. We show that, contrary to
existing experimental indications, such a mode of frictional sliding is
impossible for an interface obeying a simple local Coulomb law of solid
friction. We then discuss possible physical improvements of the friction model
which might open the possibility of such dynamics, among which slip weakening
of the friction coefficient, and stress the interest of developing systematic
