Not so disadvantaged: Portuguese migrants in Switzerland have a better access to healthcare and health status than Portuguese residents
Background: Most migrant studies have compared health characteristics between migrants and nationals of the host country. We aimed at comparing health characteristics of migrants with nationals from their home country.
Methods: Portuguese national health survey (2005-6; 30,173 participants aged 18-75 years) and four national health surveys conducted in Switzerland (2002, 2004, 2007 and 2011, totalling 1,170 Portuguese migrants of the same age range). Self-reported data on length of stay, cardiovascular risk factors, healthcare use and health status were collected.
Results: Resident Portuguese were significantly older and more educated than migrants. Resident Portuguese had a higher mean BMI and prevalence of obesity than migrants. Resident Portuguese also reported more frequently being hypertensive and having their blood pressure screened within the last year. On the contrary, migrant Portuguese were more frequently smokers, had a medical visit in the previous year more frequently and self-rated their health higher than resident Portuguese. After adjustment for age, gender, marital status and education, migrants had a higher likelihood smoking, of having a medical visit the previous year, and of self-rating their current health as good or very good than resident Portuguese. Compared to Portuguese residents, cholesterol screening in the previous year was more common only among migrants living in Switzerland for more than 17 years.
Conclusion: Portuguese migrants in Switzerland do not differ substantially from resident Portuguese regarding most cardiovascular risk factors. Migrants appear to benefit from higher healthcare accessibility and consider themselves healthier than Portuguese residents
Generic Criticality in a Model of Evolution
Using Monte Carlo simulations, we show that for a certain model of biological
evolution, which is driven by non-extremal dynamics, active and absorbing
phases are separated by a critical phase. In this phase both the density of
active sites and the survival probability of spreading decay
as , where . At the critical point, which
separates the active and critical phases, , which suggests
that this point belongs to the so-called parity-conserving universality class.
The model has infinitely many absorbing states and, except for a single point,
has no conservation law.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, minor grammatical change
The Richardson's Law in Large-Eddy Simulations of Boundary Layer flows
Relative dispersion in a neutrally stratified planetary boundary layer (PBL)
is investigated by means of Large-Eddy Simulations (LES). Despite the small
extension of the inertial range of scales in the simulated PBL, our Lagrangian
statistics turns out to be compatible with the Richardson law for the
average of square particle separation. This emerges from the application of
nonstandard methods of analysis through which a precise measure of the
Richardson constant was also possible. Its values is estimated as
in close agreement with recent experiments and three-dimensional direct
numerical simulations.Comment: 15 LaTex pages, 4 PS figure
The first Frontier Fields cluster: 4.5{\mu}m excess in a z~8 galaxy candidate in Abell 2744
We present in this letter the first analysis of a z~8 galaxy candidate found
in the Hubble and Spitzer imaging data of Abell 2744, as part of the Hubble
Frontier Fields legacy program. We applied the most commonly-used methods to
select exceptionally high-z galaxies by combining non-detection and
color-criteria using seven HST bands. We used GALFIT on IRAC images for fitting
and subtracting contamination of bright nearby sources. The physical properties
have been inferred from SED-fitting using templates with and without nebular
emission. This letter is focussed on the brightest candidate we found
(m=26.2) over the 4.9 arcmin field of view covered by the WFC3.
It shows a non-detection in the ACS bands and at 3.6{\mu}m whereas it is
clearly detected at 4.5{\mu}m with rather similar depths. This break in the
IRAC data could be explained by strong [OIII]+H{\beta} lines at z~8 which
contribute to the 4.5{\mu}m photometry. The best photo-z is found at
z~8.0, although solutions at low-redshift (z~1.9) cannot be
completely excluded, but they are strongly disfavoured by the SED-fitting work.
The amplification factor is relatively small at {\mu}=1.490.02. The Star
Formation Rate in this object is ranging from 8 to 60 Mo/yr, the stellar mass
is in the order of M=(2.5-10) x 10Mo and the size is
r~0.350.15 kpc. This object is one of the first z~8 LBG candidates showing
a clear break between 3.6{\mu}m and 4.5{\mu}m which is consistent with the IRAC
properties of the first spectroscopically confirmed galaxy at a similar
redshift. Due to its brightness, the redshift of this object could potentially
be confirmed by near infrared spectroscopy with current 8-10m telescopes. The
nature of this candidate will be revealed in the coming months with the arrival
of new ACS and Spitzer data, increasing the depth at optical and near-IR
wavelengths.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy and

A Study of Two-Temperature Non-Equilibrium Ising Models: Critical Behavior and Universality
We study a class of 2D non-equilibrium Ising models based on competing
dynamics induced by contact with heat-baths at two different temperatures. We
make a comparative study of the non-equilibrium versions of Metropolis, heat
bath/Glauber and Swendsen-Wang dynamics and focus on their critical behavior in
order to understand their universality classes. We present strong evidence that
some of these dynamics have the same critical exponents and belong to the same
universality class as the equilibrium 2D Ising model. We show that the bond
version of the Swendsen-Wang update algorithm can be mapped into an equilibrium
model at an effective temperature.Comment: 12 pages of LaTeX plus 18 pages of postscript figures in a uuencoded
