Facile Preparation of Organic Nanoparticles by Interfacial Cross-Linking of Reverse Micelles and Template Synthesis of Subnanometer Au−Pt Nanoparticles
A single- and a double-tailed cationic surfactant with the triallylammonium headgroup formed reverse micelles (RMs) in heptane/chloroform containing a small amount of water. The reverse micelles were cross-linked at the interface upon UV irradiation in the presence of a water-soluble dithiol cross-linker and a photoinitiator. The resulting interfacially cross-linked reverse micelles (ICRMs) of the single-tailed surfactant aggregated in a solvent-dependent fashion, whereas those of the double-tailed were identical in size as the corresponding RMs. The ICRMs could extract anionic metal salts, such as AuCl4− and PtCl62−, from water into the organic phase. Au and Pt metal nanoparticles were produced upon reduction of metal salts. The covalent nature of the ICRMs made the template synthesis highly predictable, with the size of the metal particles controlled by the amount of the metal salt and the method of reduction. Nanoalloys were obtained by combining two metal precursors in the same reaction. Reduction of the ICRM-entrapped aurate also occurred without any external reducing agents, and the gold nanoparticles differed dramatically from those obtained through sodium borohydride reduction. The same template allowed the preparation of luminescent Au4, Au8, and Au13−Au23 clusters, as well as gold nanoparticles several nanometers in size, simply by using different amounts of gold precursor and reducing conditions
Chimpanzee Ethnography Reveals Unexpected Cultural Diversity
Human ethnographic knowledge covers hundreds of societies, whereas chimpanzee ethnography encompasses at most 15 communities. Using termite fishing as a window into the richness of chimpanzee cultural diversity, we address a potential sampling bias with 39 additional communities across Africa. Previously, termite fishing was known from eight locations with two distinguishable techniques observed in only two communities. Here, we add nine termite-fishing communities not studied before, revealing 38 different technical elements, as well as community-specific combinations of three to seven elements. Thirty of those were not ecologically constrained, permitting the investigation of chimpanzee termite-fishing culture. The number and combination of elements shared among individuals were more similar within communities than between them, thus supporting community-majority conformity via social imitation. The variation in community-specific combinations of elements parallels cultural diversity in human greeting norms or chopstick etiquette. We suggest that termite fishing in wild chimpanzees shows some elements of cumulative cultural diversity
Le collezioni museali naturalistiche come fondamentale risorsa nella ricerca scientifica: distribuzione spazio-temporale dei reperti di grandi vertebrati marini nei musei italiani
Il patrimonio culturale marino italiano ha per tradizione e storia un’imponente ricchezza di collezioni museali naturalistiche, con migliaia di reperti ossei e tassidermizzati di vertebrati marini, costruite in oltre due secoli di attività. I reperti museali rappresentano la conoscenza primaria ed unica della biodiversità organismica ed ecosistemica storica del Mediterraneo e costituiscono un ampio archivio di tessuti e dati scientifici potenzialmente sfruttabile grazie alle nuove tecnologie biomolecolari per comprendere pattern, processi e possibili cause della perdita di biodiversità, degrado degli ecosistemi e declino delle popolazioni. Con l’obiettivo di ricostruire le traiettorie evolutive ed ecologiche di specie e popolazioni di grandi predatori marini del Mediterraneo (cetacei ed elasmobranchi) abbiamo costituito un network di 25 collezioni osteologiche museali (universitarie e civiche) e private italiane, da cui abbiamo ottenuto oltre 500 campioni (fotografie geometriche e tessuti biologici di crani, rostri, mascelle, vertebre e denti) di individui storici di Delphinus delphis, Stenella coeruleoalba, Tursiops truncatus, Carcharodon carcharias, quattro specie di pesce sega dei generi Pristis e Anoxypristis, otto specie di cetacei mediterranei e la foca monaca (Monachus monachus). Il presente lavoro descrive i risultati, in termini di numero e di distribuzione, dei reperti di alcune specie di grandi predatori marini e mette in evidenza il valore storico, culturale e scientifico delle collezioni museali, in particolar modo per gruppi di organismi di particolare interesse conservazionistico
Nocturnal activity in wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes): evidence for flexible sleeping patterns and insights into human evolution
Objectives – We investigated occurrences and patterns of terrestrial nocturnal activity in wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and modelled the influence of various ecological predictors on nocturnal activity. Methods – Data were extracted from terrestrial camera-trap footage and ecological surveys from 22 chimpanzee study sites participating in the Pan African Programme: The Cultured Chimpanzee. We described videos demonstrating nocturnal activity, and we tested the effects of the percentage of forest, abundance of predators (lions, leopards and hyenas), abundance of large mammals (buffalos and elephants), average daily temperature, rainfall, human activity, and percent illumination on the probability of nocturnal activity. Results – We found terrestrial nocturnal activity to occur at 18 of the 22 study sites, at an overall average proportion of 1.80% of total chimpanzee activity, and to occur during all hours of the night, but more frequently during twilight hours. We found a higher probability of nocturnal activity with lower levels of human activity, higher average daily temperature, and at sites with a larger percentage of forest. We found no effect of the abundance of predators and large mammals, rainfall, or moon illumination. Discussion – Chimpanzee terrestrial nocturnal activity appears widespread yet infrequent, which suggests a consolidated sleeping pattern. Nocturnal activity may be driven by the stress of high daily temperatures and may be enabled at low levels of human activity. Human activity may exert a relatively greater influence on chimpanzee nocturnal behavior than predator presence. We suggest that chimpanzee nocturnal activity is flexible, enabling them to respond to changing environmental factors
International Society of Sports Nutrition Position Stand: Probiotics.
Position statement: The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) provides an objective and critical review of the mechanisms and use of probiotic supplementation to optimize the health, performance, and recovery of athletes. Based on the current available literature, the conclusions of the ISSN are as follows: 1)Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host (FAO/WHO).2)Probiotic administration has been linked to a multitude of health benefits, with gut and immune health being the most researched applications.3)Despite the existence of shared, core mechanisms for probiotic function, health benefits of probiotics are strain- and dose-dependent.4)Athletes have varying gut microbiota compositions that appear to reflect the activity level of the host in comparison to sedentary people, with the differences linked primarily to the volume of exercise and amount of protein consumption. Whether differences in gut microbiota composition affect probiotic efficacy is unknown.5)The main function of the gut is to digest food and absorb nutrients. In athletic populations, certain probiotics strains can increase absorption of key nutrients such as amino acids from protein, and affect the pharmacology and physiological properties of multiple food components.6)Immune depression in athletes worsens with excessive training load, psychological stress, disturbed sleep, and environmental extremes, all of which can contribute to an increased risk of respiratory tract infections. In certain situations, including exposure to crowds, foreign travel and poor hygiene at home, and training or competition venues, athletes' exposure to pathogens may be elevated leading to increased rates of infections. Approximately 70% of the immune system is located in the gut and probiotic supplementation has been shown to promote a healthy immune response. In an athletic population, specific probiotic strains can reduce the number of episodes, severity and duration of upper respiratory tract infections.7)Intense, prolonged exercise, especially in the heat, has been shown to increase gut permeability which potentially can result in systemic toxemia. Specific probiotic strains can improve the integrity of the gut-barrier function in athletes.8)Administration of selected anti-inflammatory probiotic strains have been linked to improved recovery from muscle-damaging exercise.9)The minimal effective dose and method of administration (potency per serving, single vs. split dose, delivery form) of a specific probiotic strain depends on validation studies for this particular strain. Products that contain probiotics must include the genus, species, and strain of each live microorganism on its label as well as the total estimated quantity of each probiotic strain at the end of the product's shelf life, as measured by colony forming units (CFU) or live cells.10)Preclinical and early human research has shown potential probiotic benefits relevant to an athletic population that include improved body composition and lean body mass, normalizing age-related declines in testosterone levels, reductions in cortisol levels indicating improved responses to a physical or mental stressor, reduction of exercise-induced lactate, and increased neurotransmitter synthesis, cognition and mood. However, these potential benefits require validation in more rigorous human studies and in an athletic population
