Clonal variability of several grapevine cultivars (V. vinifera L.) grown in the Emilia-Romagna

Clonal selection has been performed over the past 2 decades by the University of Bologna to maintain the traditional grapevine cultivars grown in the Emilia-Romagna. Around 1980 budwood canes from several biotypes of the cvs Lambrusco di Sorbara, Lambrusco Salamino, Lambrusco Grasparossa, Lambrusco Maestri and Fortana were collected from old vineyards and used to establish a preliminary trial. The vines were tested for their virus status and compared for yield, grape quality, leaf characters and phenological phases in order to evaluate the biotype variability and clonal repeatability within each cultivar. L. Salamino, L. Grasparossa and L. Maestri showed very low degrees of genetic determination for yield and quality, while Fortana and L Sorbara exhibited quite high degrees. The results in both cases were independent on the virus status of the vines. While for cvs L. Salamino, L. Maestri and L. Grasparossa selection can be made only on the basis of virus status, good selection potentials were found with cvs L. Sorbara and Fortana. Fortana also exhibited marked differences in leaf morphology and phenological phases. Further investigations are needed to better characterize the diversity among biotypes of this variety, since the delimitation between cultivars and clones remains questionable

Comportamento mecânico e de durabilidade de concretos produzidos com efluente industrial tratado e bruto

The construction industry is one of the biggest polluters of the environment and a consumer of natural resources, fresh water, and energy. The concrete manufacturing process requires a large amount of water and releases large amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere. In view of this, an alternative that proves to be viable is to use treated sewage effluents in the execution of services and processes in civil construction that do not require water with a high-quality standard. Having said that, this research seeks to analyze the feasibility of reusing sewage effluents (treated and raw) to replace concrete kneading water, comparing them with the reference replacement, drinking water. Initially, the choice of materials used for the work was carried out, as well as the experimental dosage and molding of the specimens. Afterwards, the properties of the concrete were evaluated through tests of Uniaxial Compression Strength, Diametral Compression Tensile Strength, Modulus of Elasticity and Water Absorption. Through the results obtained in the mechanical and durability tests, it can be concluded that it is possible to use sewage effluent to produce concrete without influencing its quality, however, there must be an adequate treatment and be in accordance with the NBR technical standards 15900-1/2009 and NM 137/1997.A indústria da construção civil é uma das maiores poluidoras do meio ambiente e consumidora de recursos naturais, água doce e energia.

Influence of the Location of the Internal Temperature Control Loop on the Performance of the Dual Temperature Control for Feed Temperature Disturbance

A control strategy with distributed corrective action for distillation has been proposed and consists of a conventional dual temperature control combined with an additional column tray. In this work, we evaluated the influence of the location of this internal loop as part of the new proposal, compared to a conventional system. Tests were carried out in a 13-column tray distillation equipment and feed temperature was disturbed. Two different column trays from the stripping section were used (11 and 12) for internal decentralized temperature control, each one separately, plus the dual control of top and bottom temperatures. The results demonstrated that this proposed control approach with distributed corrective action is faster than the conventional one, regardless of the column tray in use. It was also determined that the internal loop close to the feed (disturbance) is more interesting as a way to minimize transients

Tyrphostin AG 1024 modulates radiosensitivity in human breast cancer cells

Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) plays an important growth-promoting effect by activating the PI3K/Akt signalling pathway, inhibiting apoptotic pathways and mediating mitogenic actions. Tyrphostin AG 1024, one selective inhibitor of IGF-1R, was used to evaluate effects on proliferation, radiosensitivity, and radiation-induced cell apoptosis in a human breast cancer cell line MCF-7. Exposure to Tyrphostin AG 1024 inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis in a time-dependent manner, and the degree of growth inhibition for IC20 plus irradiation (4 Gy) was up to 50% compared to the control. Examination of Tyrphostin AG 1024 effects on radiation response demonstrated a marked enhancement in radiosensitivity and amplification of radiation-induced apoptosis. Western blot analysis indicated that Tyrphostin AG 1024-induced apoptosis was associated with a downregulation of expression of phospho-Akt1, increased expression of Bax, p53 and p21, and a decreased expression of bcl-2 expression, especially when combined with irradiation. To our knowledge, this is the first report showing that an IGF-1 inhibitor was able to markedly increase the response of tumour cells to ionizing radiation. These results suggest that Tyrphostin AG 1024 could be used as a potential therapeutic agent in combination with irradiation.   http://www.bjcancer.com © 2001 Cancer Research Campaig
