Multicritical Susceptibility Sum Rules
Asymptotically close to the Nth-order multicritical point of an N-phase system, there are N-1 sum rules involving the mean-field susceptibilities measured in each of the coexisting phases. These sum rules provide the experimentalist a convenient and stringent test of the theory. In particular, they facilitate the detection of nonclassical effects, especially valuable for N\u3e3 where the fluctuation effect is dominated by the classical contribution for three-dimensional systems

Nasal administration of glutamate decarboxylase (GAD65) peptides induces Th2 responses and prevents murine insulin-dependent diabetes.
We previously demonstrated that a spontaneous Th1 response against glutamate decarboxylase (GAD65) arises in NOD mice at four weeks in age and subsequently T cell autoimmunity spreads both intramolecularly and intermolecularly. Induction of passive tolerance to GAD65, through inactivation of reactive T cells before the onset of autoimmunity, prevented determinant spreading and the development of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Here, we examined whether an alternative strategy, designed to induce active tolerance via the engagement of Th2 immune responses to GAD65, before the spontaneous onset of autoimmunity, could inhibit the cascade of Th1 responses that lead to IDDM. We observed that a single intranasal administration of GAD65 peptides to 2-3-wk-old NOD mice induced high levels of IgG1 antibodies to GAD65. GAD65 peptide treated mice displayed greatly reduced IFN gamma responses and increased IL-5 responses to GAD65, confirming the diversion of the spontaneous GAD65 Th1 response toward a Th2 phenotype. Consistent with the induction of an active tolerance mechanism, splenic CD4+ (but not CD8+) T cells from GAD65 peptide-treated mice, inhibited the adoptive transfer of IDDM to NOD-scid/scid mice. This active mechanism not only inhibited the development of proliferative T cell responses to GAD65, it also limited the expansion of autoreactive T cell responses to other beta cell antigens (i.e., determinant spreading). Finally, GAD65 peptide treatment reduced insulitis and long-term IDDM incidence. Collectively, these data suggest that the nasal administration of GAD65 peptides induces a Th2 cell response that inhibits the spontaneous development of autoreactive Th1 responses and the progression of beta cell autoimmunity in NOD mice
Measuring Global Similarity between Texts
We propose a new similarity measure between texts which, contrary to the
current state-of-the-art approaches, takes a global view of the texts to be
compared. We have implemented a tool to compute our textual distance and
conducted experiments on several corpuses of texts. The experiments show that

Sec22b-dependent antigen cross-presentation is a significant contributor of T cell priming during infection with the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi
Antigen cross-presentation is a vital mechanism of dendritic cells and other antigen presenting cells to orchestrate the priming of cytotoxic responses towards killing of infected or cancer cells. In this process, exogenous antigens are internalized by dendritic cells, processed, loaded onto MHC class I molecules and presented to CD8+ T cells to activate them. Sec22b is an ER-Golgi Intermediate Compartment resident SNARE protein that, in partnership with sintaxin4, coordinates the recruitment of the transporter associated with antigen processing protein and the peptide loading complex to phagosomes, where antigenic peptides that have been proteolyzed in the cytosol are loaded in MHC class I molecules and transported to the cell membrane. The silencing of Sec22b in dendritic cells primary cultures and conditionally in dendritic cells of C57BL/6 mice, critically impairs antigen cross-presentation, but neither affects other antigen presentation routes nor cytokine production and secretion. Mice with Sec22b conditionally silenced in dendritic cells (Sec22b−/− ) show deficient priming of CD8+ T lymphocytes, fail to control tumor growth, and are resistant to anti-checkpoint immunotherapy. Evidence for D1 Dopamine Receptor Activation by a Paracrine Signal of Dopamine in Tick Salivary Glands
Ticks that feed on vertebrate hosts use their salivary secretion, which contains various bioactive components, to manipulate the host's responses. The mechanisms controlling the tick salivary gland in this dynamic process are not well understood. We identified the tick D1 receptor activated by dopamine, a potent inducer of the salivary secretion of ticks. Temporal and spatial expression patterns examined by immunohistochemistry and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction suggest that the dopamine produced in the basal cells of salivary gland acini is secreted into the lumen and activates the D1 receptors on the luminal surface of the cells lining the acini. Therefore, we propose a paracrine function of dopamine that is mediated by the D1 receptor in the salivary gland at an early phase of feeding. The molecular and pharmacological characterization of the D1 receptor in this study provides the foundation for understanding the functions of dopamine in the blood-feeding of ticks
A Standardised Procedure for Evaluating Creative Systems: Computational Creativity Evaluation Based on What it is to be Creative
Computational creativity is a flourishing research area, with a variety of creative systems being produced and developed. Creativity evaluation has not kept pace with system development with an evident lack of systematic evaluation of the creativity of these systems in the literature. This is partially due to difficulties in defining what it means for a computer to be creative; indeed, there is no consensus on this for human creativity, let alone its computational equivalent. This paper proposes a Standardised Procedure for Evaluating Creative Systems (SPECS). SPECS is a three-step process: stating what it means for a particular computational system to be creative, deriving and performing tests based on these statements. To assist this process, the paper offers a collection of key components of creativity, identified empirically from discussions of human and computational creativity. Using this approach, the SPECS methodology is demonstrated through a comparative case study evaluating computational creativity systems that improvise music
Novel scaling behavior of the Ising model on curved surfaces
We demonstrate the nontrivial scaling behavior of Ising models defined on (i)
a donut-shaped surface and (ii) a curved surface with a constant negative
curvature. By performing Monte Carlo simulations, we find that the former model
has two distinct critical temperatures at which both the specific heat
and magnetic susceptibility show sharp peaks.The critical exponents
associated with the two critical temperatures are evaluated by the finite-size
scaling analysis; the result reveals that the values of these exponents vary
depending on the temperature range under consideration. In the case of the
latter model, it is found that static and dynamic critical exponents deviate
from those of the Ising model on a flat plane; this is a direct consequence of
the constant negative curvature of the underlying surface.Comment: 11 pages 5 figure
Haptic subitizing across the fingers
Numerosity judgments of small sets of items (≤ 3) are generally fast and errorfree, while response times and error rates increase rapidly for larger numbers of items. We investigated an efficient process used for judging small numbers of items (known as subitizing) in active touch. We hypothesized that this efficient process for numerosity judgment might be related to stimulus properties that allow for efficient (parallel) search. Our results showed that subitizing was not possible forraised lines among flat surfaces, whereas this type of stimulus could be detected in parallel over the fingers. However, subitizing was possible when the number of fingers touching a surface had to be judged while the other fingers were lowered in mid-air. In the latter case, the lack of tactile input is essential, since subitizing was not enabled by differences in proprioceptive information from the fingers. Our results show that subitizing using haptic information from the fingers is possible only whensome fingers receive tactile information while other fingers do not
On the determination of a cloud condensation nuclei from satellite : Challenges and possibilities
We use aerosol size distributions measured in the size range from 0.01 to 10+ μm during Transport and Chemical Evolution over the Pacific (TRACE-P) and Aerosol Characterization Experiment-Asia (ACE-Asia), results of chemical analysis, measured/modeled humidity growth, and stratification by air mass types to explore correlations between aerosol optical parameters and aerosol number concentration. Size distributions allow us to integrate aerosol number over any size range expected to be effective cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and to provide definition of a proxy for CCN (CCNproxy). Because of the internally mixed nature of most accumulation mode aerosol and the relationship between their measured volatility and solubility, this CCNproxy can be linked to the optical properties of these size distributions at ambient conditions. This allows examination of the relationship between CCNproxy and the aerosol spectral radiances detected by satellites. Relative increases in coarse aerosol (e.g., dust) generally add only a few particles to effective CCN but significantly increase the scattering detected by satellite and drive the Angstrom exponent (α) toward zero. This has prompted the use of a so-called aerosol index (AI) on the basis of the product of the aerosol optical depth and the nondimensional α, both of which can be inferred from satellite observations. This approach biases the AI to be closer to scattering values generated by particles in the accumulation mode that dominate particle number and is therefore dominated by sizes commonly effective as CCN. Our measurements demonstrate that AI does not generally relate well to a measured proxy for CCN unless the data are suitably stratified. Multiple layers, complex humidity profiles, dust with very low α mixed with pollution, and size distribution differences in pollution and biomass emissions appear to contribute most to method limitations. However, we demonstrate that these characteristic differences result in predictable influences on AI. These results suggest that inference of CCN from satellites will be challenging, but new satellite and model capabilities could possibly be integrated to improve this retrieval
The effect of feature saliency on haptic subitizing
‘Subitizing’ refers to fast and error-free numerosity judgment for small (<4) sets of items. For larger sets, the slower process of ‘counting’ is used. Counting has a serial character, whereas subitizing is believed to have a parallel character. While subitizing was initially found in vision, it has been shown to exist in touch as well. In vision, it has been demonstrated that adding distractor items to a set of target items influences numerosity judgment of the target items. Subitizing was in this case only possible if the distractor item is highly salient among the targets. In the present study, we investigated the effect of adding a distractor item on haptic judgement of a set of target items. To this end, we asked subjects to judge the number of spheres grasped in their hand. Either a cube or an ellipsoid could be added to the set. A cube among spheres has been shown to be highly salient, while an ellipsoid among spheres is not. Our results show that adding a distractor item led to an increase in the response time slopes regardless of the distractor shape. Subitizing was, however, only possible in the case of a salient distractor. This is in agreement with results from vision
