A context model for semantic mediation in Web services composition
This paper presents a context-driven approach that aims at supporting semantic mediation between composed Web services. Despite the widespread adoption of Web services by the IT community, innovative solutions are needed in order to overcome the challenging issue that relates to the semantic disparity of exchanged data. Indeed, there is a lack of means for interpreting these data according to the contextual requirements of each Web service. The context-driven approach suggests two steps. The first step consists of developing a model for anchoring context to data flowing between Web services. In the second step, we use this model to support the semantic mediation between Web services engaged in a composition. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006

Large variation in the Rubisco kinetics of diatoms reveals diversity among their carbon-concentrating mechanisms
While marine phytoplankton rival plants in their contribution to global primary productivity, our understanding of their photosynthesis remains rudimentary. In particular, the kinetic diversity of the CO₂-fixing enzyme, Rubisco, in phytoplankton remains unknown. Here we quantify the maximum rates of carboxylation (Kcatᶜ), oxygenation (Kcatᵒ), Michaelis constants (K m) for CO₂ (K C) and O₂ (K O), and specificity for CO₂ over O₂ (SC/O) for Form I Rubisco from 11 diatom species. Diatom Rubisco shows greater variation in KC (23-68 μM), SC/O (57-116mol mol⁻¹), and KO (413-2032 μM) relative to plant and algal Rubisco. The broad range of KC values mostly exceed those of C₄ plant Rubisco, suggesting that the strength of the carbon-concentrating mechanism (CCM) in diatoms is more diverse, and more effective than previously predicted. The measured k cat c for each diatom Rubisco showed less variation (2.1-3.7s⁻¹), thus averting the canonical trade-off typically observed between KC and kcatᶜ for plant Form I Rubisco. Uniquely, a negative relationship between KC and cellular Rubisco content was found, suggesting variation among diatom species in how they allocate their limited cellular resources between Rubisco synthesis and their CCM. The activation status of Rubisco in each diatom was low, indicating a requirement for Rubisco activase. This work highlights the need to better understand the correlative natural diversity between the Rubisco kinetics and CCM of diatoms and the underpinning mechanistic differences in catalytic chemistry among the Form I Rubisco superfamily
The three-dimensional structure of Saturn's E ring
Saturn's diffuse E ring consists of many tiny (micron and sub-micron) grains
of water ice distributed between the orbits of Mimas and Titan. Various
gravitational and non-gravitational forces perturb these particles' orbits,
causing the ring's local particle density to vary noticeably with distance from
the planet, height above the ring-plane, hour angle and time. Using
remote-sensing data obtained by the Cassini spacecraft in 2005 and 2006, we
investigate the E-ring's three-dimensional structure during a time when the Sun
illuminated the rings from the south at high elevation angles (> 15 degrees).
These observations show that the ring's vertical thickness grows with distance
from Enceladus' orbit and its peak brightness density shifts from south to
north of Saturn's equator plane with increasing distance from the planet. These
data also reveal a localized depletion in particle density near Saturn's
equatorial plane around Enceladus' semi-major axis. Finally, variations are
detected in the radial brightness profile and the vertical thickness of the
ring as a function of longitude relative to the Sun. Possible physical
mechanisms and processes that may be responsible for some of these structures
include solar radiation pressure, variations in the ambient plasma, and

The closest elastic tensor of arbitrary symmetry to an elasticity tensor of lower symmetry
The closest tensors of higher symmetry classes are derived in explicit form
for a given elasticity tensor of arbitrary symmetry. The mathematical problem
is to minimize the elastic length or distance between the given tensor and the
closest elasticity tensor of the specified symmetry. Solutions are presented
for three distance functions, with particular attention to the Riemannian and
log-Euclidean distances. These yield solutions that are invariant under
inversion, i.e., the same whether elastic stiffness or compliance are
considered. The Frobenius distance function, which corresponds to common
notions of Euclidean length, is not invariant although it is simple to apply
using projection operators. A complete description of the Euclidean projection
method is presented. The three metrics are considered at a level of detail far
greater than heretofore, as we develop the general framework to best fit a
given set of moduli onto higher elastic symmetries. The procedures for finding
the closest elasticity tensor are illustrated by application to a set of 21

Taking account of this circumstance, the objective of the current research may be phrased as two separate questions. In the first place, determining the importance which IT related degree students place on these types of competencies for their professional future. In the second place, the importance which the development of the mentioned competencies has been given during their studies. The realization of an empirical study has fulfilled the two objectives described. The results demonstrate, on the one side, the moderate relevance which students assign to interpersonal competencies, especially emotional competencies, in contrast to the international curricular recommendations and studies concerning labor markets. On the other hand, the results indicate the scarce emphasis which lecturers have placed on the development of such competencies.Publicad
Saturn's icy satellites and rings investigated by Cassini - VIMS. III. Radial compositional variability
In the last few years Cassini-VIMS, the Visible and Infared Mapping
Spectrometer, returned to us a comprehensive view of the Saturn's icy
satellites and rings. After having analyzed the satellites' spectral properties
(Filacchione et al. (2007a)) and their distribution across the satellites'
hemispheres (Filacchione et al. (2010)), we proceed in this paper to
investigate the radial variability of icy satellites (principal and minor) and
main rings average spectral properties. This analysis is done by using 2,264
disk-integrated observations of the satellites and a 12x700 pixels-wide rings
radial mosaic acquired with a spatial resolution of about 125 km/pixel. The
comparative analysis of these data allows us to retrieve the amount of both
water ice and red contaminant materials distributed across Saturn's system and
the typical surface regolith grain sizes. These measurements highlight very
striking differences in the population here analyzed, which vary from the
almost uncontaminated and water ice-rich surfaces of Enceladus and Calypso to
the metal/organic-rich and red surfaces of Iapetus' leading hemisphere and
Phoebe. Rings spectra appear more red than the icy satellites in the visible
range but show more intense 1.5-2.0 micron band depths. The correlations among
spectral slopes, band depths, visual albedo and phase permit us to cluster the
saturnian population in different spectral classes which are detected not only
among the principal satellites and rings but among co-orbital minor moons as
well. Finally, we have applied Hapke's theory to retrieve the best spectral
fits to Saturn's inner regular satellites using the same methodology applied

Employment Changes following Breast Cancer Diagnosis: The Effects of Race and Place
The financial implications of breast cancer diagnosis may be greater among rural and black women. Women with incident breast cancer were recruited as part of the Carolina Breast Cancer Study. We compared unadjusted and adjusted prevalence of cancer-related job or income loss, and a composite measure of either outcome, by rural residence and stratified by race. We included 2435 women: 11.7% were rural; 48.5% were black; and 38.0% reported employment changes after diagnosis. Rural women more often reported employment effects, including reduced household income (43.6% vs 35.4%, two-sided ?2 test P =. 04). Rural white, rural black, and urban black women each more often reported income reduction (statistically significant vs. urban white women), although these groups did not meaningfully differ from each other. In multivariable regression, rural differences were mediated by socioeconomic factors, but racial differences remained. Programs and policies to reduce financial toxicity in vulnerable patients should address indirect costs of cancer, including lost wages and employment
Inferring transmission trees to guide targeting of interventions against visceral leishmaniasis and post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis
Understanding of spatiotemporal transmission of infectious diseases has improved significantly in recent years. Advances in Bayesian inference methods for individual-level geo-located epidemiological data have enabled reconstruction of transmission trees and quantification of disease spread in space and time, while accounting for uncertainty in missing data. However, these methods have rarely been applied to endemic diseases or ones in which asymptomatic infection plays a role, for which additional estimation methods are required. Here, we develop such methods to analyze longitudinal incidence data on visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and its sequela, post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL), in a highly endemic community in Bangladesh. Incorporating recent data on VL and PKDL infectiousness, we show that while VL cases drive transmission when incidence is high, the contribution of PKDL increases significantly as VL incidence declines (reaching 55% in this setting). Theoretical overview on high-energy emission in microquasars
Microquasar (MQ) jets are sites of particle acceleration and synchrotron
emission. Such synchrotron radiation has been detected coming from jet regions
of different spatial scales, which for the instruments at work nowadays appear
as compact radio cores, slightly resolved radio jets, or (very) extended
structures. Because of the presence of relativistic particles and dense photon,
magnetic and matter fields, these outflows are also the best candidates to
generate the very high-energy (VHE) gamma-rays detected coming from two of
these objects, LS 5039 and LS I +61 303, and may be contributing significantly
to the X-rays emitted from the MQ core. In addition, beside electromagnetic
radiation, jets at different scales are producing some amount of leptonic and
hadronic cosmic rays (CR), and evidences of neutrino production in these
objects may be eventually found. In this work, we review on the different
physical processes that may be at work in or related to MQ jets. The jet
regions capable to produce significant amounts of emission at different
wavelengths have been reduced to the jet base, the jet at scales of the order
of the size of the system orbital semi-major axis, the jet middle scales (the
resolved radio jets), and the jet termination point. The surroundings of the
jet could be sites of multiwavelegnth emission as well, deserving also an
insight. We focus on those scenarios, either hadronic or leptonic, in which it
seems more plausible to generate both photons from radio to VHE and high-energy
neutrinos. We briefly comment as well on the relevance of MQ as possible
