Detection of neutrons from atmospheric lightning by cosmic ray neutron monitor.

The thesis deals with the study of neutron generation in atmospheric lightning discharges. The thesis is divided into 6 chapters. The chapter-1 presents a very brief discussion of the process of nuclear fusion and the results of the experiments on exploding wires and follow up by reviewing the lightning phenomenon, with particular stress on the details of the physical parameters of a lightning channel. A brief review of the cosmic rays and its variation is discussed in chapter-2.In chapter-3 present calculations on the propagation of neutrons of energy several MeV in the atmosphere. The Chapter-4 deals with the system for detection of neutrons from lightning discharges. The data obtained from the experiment and its analysis are presented in chapter-5.A detailed discussion of the results obtained from this experiment and a comparative study of these results with those of exploding wires is also presented in this chapter. The chapter-6 presents the summary and concluding remarks and possible directions for future investigation
