    In this paper, we prove the following identity \lcm({n\brack 0}_q,{n\brack 1}_q,...,{n\brack n}_q) =\frac{\lcm([1]_q,[2]_q,...,[n+1]_q)}{[n+1]_q}, where [nk]q{n\brack k}_q denotes the qq-binomial coefficient and [n]q=1−qn1−q[n]_q=\frac{1-q^n}{1-q}.     Two-stage Kondo effect in a four-electron artificial atom

    An artificial atom with four electrons is driven through a singlet-triplet transition by varying the confining potential. In the triplet, a Kondo peak with a narrow dip at drain-source voltage V_ds=0 is observed. The low energy scale V_ds* characterizing the dip is consistent with predictions for the two-stage Kondo effect. The phenomenon is studied as a function of temperature T and magnetic field B, parallel to the two-dimensional electron gas. The low energy scales T* and B* are extracted from the behavior of the zero-bias conductance and are compared to the low energy scale V_ds* obtained from the differential conductance. Good agreement is found between kT* and |g|muB*, but eV_ds* is larger, perhaps because of nonequilibrium effects.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures. Added labels on Fig. 3f and one referenc

    On the design and development of a miniature ceramic gimbal bearing

    A review is made of a program to develop ceramic gimbal bearings for a miniaturized missile guidance system requiring nonmagnetic properties and higher load capacity than possible with conventional AISI 440C stainless steel bearings. A new gimbal design concept is described which utilizes the compressive strength and nonmagnetic properties of silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramics for the gimbal bearing. Considerable manufacturing development has occurred in the last 5 years making ceramic bearings a viable option in the gimbal design phase. A preliminary study into the feasibility of the proposed design is summarized. Finite element analysis of the brittle ceramic bearing components under thermal stress and high acceleration loading were conducted to ensure the components will not fail catastrophically in service. Finite element analysis was also used to optimize the adhesive joint design. Bearing torque tests run at various axial loads indicate that the average running torque of ceramic bearings varies with load similarly to that of conventional steel bearings

    The de Sitter Relativistic Top Theory

    We discuss the relativistic top theory from the point of view of the de Sitter (or anti de Sitter) group. Our treatment rests on Hanson-Regge's spherical relativistic top lagrangian formulation. We propose an alternative method for studying spinning objects via Kaluza-Klein theory. In particular, we derive the relativistic top equations of motion starting with the geodesic equation for a point particle in 4+N dimensions. We compare our approach with the Fukuyama's formulation of spinning objects, which is also based on Kaluza-Klein theory.     Quantum Degenerate Systems

    Degenerate dynamical systems are characterized by symplectic structures whose rank is not constant throughout phase space. Their phase spaces are divided into causally disconnected, nonoverlapping regions such that there are no classical orbits connecting two different regions. Here the question of whether this classical disconnectedness survives quantization is addressed. Our conclusion is that in irreducible degenerate systems --in which the degeneracy cannot be eliminated by redefining variables in the action--, the disconnectedness is maintained in the quantum theory: there is no quantum tunnelling across degeneracy surfaces. This shows that the degeneracy surfaces are boundaries separating distinct physical systems, not only classically, but in the quantum realm as well. The relevance of this feature for gravitation and Chern-Simons theories in higher dimensions cannot be overstated.Comment: 18 pages, no figure

    Sensitivity of Ag/Al Interface Specific Resistances to Interfacial Intermixing

    We have measured an Ag/Al interface specific resistance, 2AR(Ag/Al)(111) = 1.4 fOhm-m^2, that is twice that predicted for a perfect interface, 50% larger than for a 2 ML 50%-50% alloy, and even larger than our newly predicted 1.3 fOhmm^2 for a 4 ML 50%-50% alloy. Such a large value of 2ARAg/Al(111) confirms a predicted sensitivity to interfacial disorder and suggests an interface greater than or equal to 4 ML thick. From our calculations, a predicted anisotropy ratio, 2AR(Ag/Al)(001)/2AR(Ag/Al)(111), of more then 4 for a perfect interface, should be reduced to less than 2 for a 4 ML interface, making it harder to detect any such anisotropy.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, 1 table.     Noncommutativity in interpolating string: A study of gauge symmetries in noncommutative framework

    A new Lagrangian description that interpolates between the Nambu--Goto and Polyakov version of interacting strings is given. Certain essential modifications in the Poission bracket structure of this interpolating theory generates noncommutativity among the string coordinates for both free and interacting strings. The noncommutativity is shown to be a direct consequence of the nontrivial boundary conditions. A thorough analysis of the gauge symmetry is presented taking into account the new modified constraint algebra, which follows from the noncommutative structures and finally a smooth correspondence between gauge symmetry and reparametrisation is established.Comment: 14 pages Late
