    Nuclear reactor power as applied to a space-based radar mission

    The SP-100 Project was established to develop and demonstrate feasibility of a space reactor power system (SRPS) at power levels of 10's of kilowatts to a megawatt. To help determine systems requirements for the SRPS, a mission and spacecraft were examined which utilize this power system for a space-based radar to observe moving objects. Aspects of the mission and spacecraft bearing on the power system were the primary objectives of this study; performance of the radar itself was not within the scope.     Effects of 1- and 2-MeV electrons on photomultiplier tubes

    Various types of photomultiplier tubes useful for space applications were irradiated with 1- and 2-MeV electrons at Van Allen radiation belt fluxes of 100,000 to 10 millions electrons/sq cm-sec. The increase in the dark current due to electron irradiation was observed at various bias voltages under worst-case conditions (no shielding). Results were presented in the form of dark current plotted against electron flux. All the tubes tested showed extremely large increases in dark current. Tube types 541A, 6217, 6199, and 6903 exhibited the largest increases under irradiation, whereas type 1P22 was affected the least. All the damage observed was transient. The luminescence produced in the optical window probably accounts for a large part of the dark-current increases, but there were some effects possibly due to direct irradiation of the photocathode and dynode chain

    The ROTSE-III Robotic Telescope System

    The observation of a prompt optical flash from GRB990123 convincingly demonstrated the value of autonomous robotic telescope systems. Pursuing a program of rapid follow-up observations of gamma-ray bursts, the Robotic Optical Transient Search Experiment (ROTSE) has developed a next-generation instrument, ROTSE-III, that will continue the search for fast optical transients. The entire system was designed as an economical robotic facility to be installed at remote sites throughout the world. There are seven major system components: optics, optical tube assembly, CCD camera, telescope mount, enclosure, environmental sensing & protection and data acquisition. Each is described in turn in the hope that the techniques developed here will be useful in similar contexts elsewhere.Comment: 19 pages, including 4 figures. To be published in PASP in January, 2003.     New Measurement of the Cosmic-Ray Positron Fraction from 5 to 15 GeV

    We present a new measurement of the cosmic-ray positron fraction at energies between 5 and 15 GeV with the balloon-borne HEAT-pbar instrument in the spring of 2000. The data presented here are compatible with our previous measurements, obtained with a different instrument. The combined data from the three HEAT flights indicate a small positron flux of non-standard origin above 5 GeV. We compare the new measurement with earlier data obtained with the HEAT-e+- instrument, during the opposite epoch of the solar cycle, and conclude that our measurements do not support predictions of charge sign dependent solar modulation of the positron abundance at 5 GeV.Comment: accepted for publication in PR

    Status of ANITA and ANITA-lite

    We describe a new experiment to search for neutrinos with energies above 3 x 10^18 eV based on the observation of short duration radio pulses that are emitted from neutrino-initiated cascades. The primary objective of the ANtarctic Impulse Transient Antenna (ANITA) mission is to measure the flux of Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) neutrinos and search for neutrinos from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We present first results obtained from the successful launch of a 2-antenna prototype instrument (called ANITA-lite) that circled Antarctica for 18 days during the 03/04 Antarctic campaign and show preliminary results from attenuation length studies of electromagnetic waves at radio frequencies in Antarctic ice.     Identity work and the `unemployed' worker: age, disability and the lived experience of the older unemployed

    This article seeks to explore how older individuals negotiate and manage their self-identity in relation to work while situated without paid employment. After reviewing the current positions of the older unemployed in the UK, noting the substantial overlap between age and disability, we turn our attention to conceptualizing the lived experiences of individuals through exploring `identity work' as a means of understanding a non-working work identity. Based upon focus group interviews, our empirical analysis focuses on key dimensions of participants' identity practice and how they sought to manage the following social processes: imposed identities; crafting working identities; and contesting unfavourable working identities.The conclusion contextualizes the findings against a backdrop of increasing individualistic discourses underpinning approaches to employability, closes with the policy implications arising from this study, and makes suggestions for future research agendas. </jats:p

    Observational Constraints on the Ultra-high Energy Cosmic Neutrino Flux from the Second Flight of the ANITA Experiment

    The Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) completed its second long-duration balloon flight in January 2009, with 31 days aloft (28.5 live days) over Antarctica. ANITA searches for impulsive coherent radio Cherenkov emission from 200 to 1200 MHz, arising from the Askaryan charge excess in ultra-high energy neutrino-induced cascades within Antarctic ice. This flight included significant improvements over the first flight in the payload sensitivity, efficiency, and a flight trajectory over deeper ice. Analysis of in-flight calibration pulses from surface and sub-surface locations verifies the expected sensitivity. In a blind analysis, we find 2 surviving events on a background, mostly anthropogenic, of 0.97+-0.42 events. We set the strongest limit to date for 1-1000 EeV cosmic neutrinos, excluding several current cosmogenic neutrino models.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
