OH(1720 MHz) Masers As Signposts of Molecular Shocks
We present observations of molecular gas made with the 15-m James Clark
Maxwell Telescope toward the sites of OH(1720 MHz) masers in three supernova
remnants: W28, W44 and 3C391. Maps made in the 12CO J=3-2 line reveal that the
OH masers are preferentially located along the edges of thin filaments or
clumps of molecular gas. There is a strong correlation between the morphology
of the molecular gas and the relativistic gas traced by synchrotron emission at
centimeter wavelengths. Broad CO line widths (dV=30-50 km/s) are seen along
these gaseous ridges, while narrow lines are seen off the ridges. The ratio of
H2CO line strengths is used to determine temperatures in the broad-line gas of
80 K, and the 13CO J=3-2 column density suggests densities of 10^4-10^5 cm{-3}.
These observations support the hypothesis that the OH(1720 MHz) masers
originate in post-shock gas, heated by the passage of a supernova remnant shock
through dense molecular gas. From the observational constraints on the density,
velocity and magnetic field we examine the physical properties of the shock and
discuss the shock-production of OH. These OH(1720 MHz) masers are useful
``signposts'', which point to the most promising locations to study supernova

Tau and atrophy: domain-specific relationships with cognition.
BackgroundLate-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by primary memory impairment, which then progresses towards severe deficits across cognitive domains. Here, we report how performance in cognitive domains relates to patterns of tau deposition and cortical thickness.MethodsWe analyzed data from 131 amyloid-β positive participants (55 cognitively normal, 46 mild cognitive impairment, 30 AD) of the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), flortaucipir (FTP) positron emission tomography, and neuropsychological testing. Surface-based vertex-wise and region-of-interest analyses were conducted between FTP and cognitive test scores, and between cortical thickness and cognitive test scores.ResultsFTP and thickness were differentially related to cognitive performance in several domains. FTP-cognition associations were more widespread than thickness-cognition associations. Further, FTP-cognition patterns reflected cortical systems that underlie different aspects of cognition.ConclusionsOur findings indicate that AD-related decline in domain-specific cognitive performance reflects underlying progression of tau and atrophy into associated brain circuits. They also suggest that tau-PET may have better sensitivity to this decline than MRI-derived measures of cortical thickness
Heating and cooling of the neutral ISM in the NGC4736 circumnuclear ring
The manner in which gas accretes and orbits within circumnuclear rings has
direct implications for the star formation process. In particular, gas may be
compressed and shocked at the inflow points, resulting in bursts of star
formation at these locations. Afterwards the gas and young stars move together
through the ring. In addition, star formation may occur throughout the ring, if
and when the gas reaches sufficient density to collapse under gravity. These
two scenarios for star formation in rings are often referred to as the `pearls
on a string' and `popcorn' paradigms. In this paper, we use new Herschel PACS
observations, obtained as part of the KINGFISH Open Time Key Program, along
with archival Spitzer and ground-based observations from the SINGS Legacy
project, to investigate the heating and cooling of the interstellar medium in
the nearby star-forming ring galaxy, NGC4736. By comparing spatially resolved
estimates of the stellar FUV flux available for heating, with the gas and dust
cooling derived from the FIR continuum and line emission, we show that while
star formation is indeed dominant at the inflow points in NGC 4736, additional
star formation is needed to balance the gas heating and cooling throughout the
ring. This additional component most likely arises from the general increase in
gas density in the ring over its lifetime. Our data provide strong evidence,
therefore, for a combination of the two paradigms for star formation in the
ring in NGC4736.Comment: accepted for publication in A&
Route of Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida Vaccine Administration Does Not Affect Health or Performance of Receiving Heifers
Light weight stocker calves often experience health problems shortly after arrival to feeding facilities. Preventative health programs are routinely administered to calves upon arrival to reduce the incidence of Bovine Respiratory Disease. The major route of vaccine administration in cattle is via injection through either intramuscular or subcutaneous routes. Several products have been introduced that utilize the intranasal route of vaccine administration. There are several reasons why intranasal vaccine administration may be more beneficial: 1) Intranasal vaccine administration alleviates concerns that injections pose for Beef Quality Assurance programs. 2) Intranasal vaccine administration may be less stressful on the animal. 3) Intranasal vaccine administration delivers the vaccine to the site of infection in the case of respiratory pathogens, and may provide a different adaptive immune response to the vaccine.

Multimode bolometer development for the PIXIE instrument
The Primordial Inflation Explorer (PIXIE) is an Explorer-class mission
concept designed to measure the polarization and absolute intensity of the
cosmic microwave background. In the following, we report on the design,
fabrication, and performance of the multimode polarization-sensitive bolometers
for PIXIE, which are based on silicon thermistors. In particular we focus on
several recent advances in the detector design, including the implementation of
a scheme to greatly raise the frequencies of the internal vibrational modes of
the large-area, low-mass optical absorber structure consisting of a grid of
micromachined, ion-implanted silicon wires. With times the absorbing
area of the spider-web bolometers used by Planck, the tensioning scheme enables
the PIXIE bolometers to be robust in the vibrational and acoustic environment
at launch of the space mission. More generally, it could be used to reduce
microphonic sensitivity in other types of low temperature detectors. We also
report on the performance of the PIXIE bolometers in a dark cryogenic

Variable-delay Polarization Modulators for Cryogenic Millimeter-wave Applications
We describe the design, construction, and initial validation of the
variable-delay polarization modulator (VPM) designed for the PIPER cosmic
microwave background polarimeter. The VPM modulates between linear and circular
polarization by introducing a variable phase delay between orthogonal linear
polarizations. Each VPM has a diameter of 39 cm and is engineered to operate in
a cryogenic environment (1.5 K). We describe the mechanical design and
performance of the kinematic double-blade flexure and drive mechanism along

A Summary of the Experimental Results for a Generic Tractor-Trailer in the Ames Research Center 7- by 10-Foot and 12-Foot Wind Tunnels
Experimental measurements of a generic tractor-trailer were obtained in two wind tunnels at Ames Research Center. After a preliminary study at atmospheric conditions in the 7- by 10-Foot Wind Tunnel, additional testing was conducted at Reynolds numbers corresponding to full-scale highway speeds in the 12-Foot Pressure Wind Tunnel. To facilitate computational modeling, the 1:8-scale geometry, designated the Generic Conventional Model, included a simplified underbody and omitted many small-scale details. The measurements included overall and component forces and moments, static and dynamic surface pressures, and three-component particle image velocimetry. This summary report highlights the effects of numerous drag reduction concepts and provides details of the model installation in both wind tunnels. To provide a basis for comparison, the wind-averaged drag coefficient was tabulated for all configurations tested. Relative to the baseline configuration representative of a modern class-8 tractor-trailer, the most effective concepts were the trailer base flaps and trailer belly box providing a drag-coefficient reduction of 0.0855 and 0.0494, respectively. Trailer side skirts were less effective yielding a drag reduction of 0.0260. The database of this experimental effort is publicly available for further analysis
Seeking the Local Convergence Depth. V. Tully-Fisher Peculiar Velocities for 52 Abell Clusters
We have obtained I band Tully-Fisher (TF) measurements for 522 late-type
galaxies in the fields of 52 rich Abell clusters distributed throughout the sky
between 50 and 200\h Mpc. Here we estimate corrections to the data for various
forms of observational bias, most notably Malmquist and cluster population
incompleteness bias. The bias-corrected data are applied to the construction of
an I band TF template, resulting in a relation with a dispersion of 0.38
magnitudes and a kinematical zero-point accurate to 0.02 magnitudes. This
represents the most accurate TF template relation currently available.
Individual cluster TF relations are referred to the average template relation
to compute cluster peculiar motions. The line-of-sight dispersion in the
peculiar motions is 341+/-93 km/s, in general agreement with that found for the

The hidden HI-massive LIRG HIZOA J0836-43: Inside-out galaxy formation
HIZOA J0836-43 is an extreme gas-rich (=7.5\times10^{10}
M_{\sun}) disk galaxy which lies hidden behind the strongly obscuring Vela
region of the Milky Way. Utilizing observations from the {\it Spitzer Space
Telescope}, we have found it to be a luminous infrared starburst galaxy with a
star formation rate of \sim 21 M_{\sun} \rm{yr^{-1}}, arising from
exceptionally strong molecular PAH emission (L_{7.7\micron} = 1.50 \times
10^{9} L_{\odot}) and far-infrared emission from cold dust. The galaxy
exhibits a weak mid-infrared continuum compared to other starforming galaxies
and U/LIRGs. This relative lack of emission from small grains suggests atypical
interstellar medium conditions compared to other starbursts. We do not detect
significant Ne {\sc v} or O {\sc iv}, which implies an absent or
very weak AGN. The galaxy possesses a prominent bulge of evolved stars and a
stellar mass of 4.4(1.4)\times10^{10} M_{\sun}. With its plentiful gas
supply and current star formation rate, a doubling of stellar mass would occur
on a timescale of 2 Gyr. Compared to local galaxies, HIZOA J0836-43
appears to be a "scaled-up" spiral undergoing inside-out formation, possibly

Spectral Mapping Reconstruction of Extended Sources
Three dimensional spectroscopy of extended sources is typically performed
with dedicated integral field spectrographs. We describe a method of
reconstructing full spectral cubes, with two spatial and one spectral
dimension, from rastered spectral mapping observations employing a single slit
in a traditional slit spectrograph. When the background and image
characteristics are stable, as is often achieved in space, the use of
traditional long slits for integral field spectroscopy can substantially reduce
instrument complexity over dedicated integral field designs, without loss of
mapping efficiency -- particularly compelling when a long slit mode for single
unresolved source followup is separately required. We detail a custom
flux-conserving cube reconstruction algorithm, discuss issues of extended
source flux calibration, and describe CUBISM, a tool which implements these
methods for spectral maps obtained with ther Spitzer Space Telescope's Infrared
