A clinical trial of the Examen and mindfulness within a secular substance use disorder treatment program
The Examen is a 500-year-old Jesuit introspective prayer and reflection. Recent research has indicated that it has utility in psychotherapy. This study implemented the Examen as a secular cognitive–behavioral tool in the first longitudinal clinical trial of the intervention with an addiction treatment population, comparing it directly to a treatment-as-usual mindfulness intervention. The study found that Examen and mindfulness are equivalent in outcomes on depression, anxiety, stress, and substance craving. Further research should continue to investigate the Examen as an alternative to mindfulness for religious and secular populations and the factors responsible for the success of these practices
DYNAMICS OF FISCAL FINANCING IN THE UNITED STATES
Dynamic stochastic general equilibrium models that include policy rules for government spending, lump-sum transfers, and distortionary taxation on labor and capital income and on consumption expenditures are fit to U.S. data under a variety of specifica- tions of fiscal policy rules. We obtain several results. First, the best fitting model allows a rich set of fiscal instruments to respond to stabilize debt. Second, responses of aggregate variables to fiscal policy shocks under rich fiscal rules can vary considerably from responses that allow only non-distortionary fiscal instruments to finance debt. Third, based on esti- mated policy rules, transfers, capital tax rates, and government spending have historically responded strongly to government debt, while labor taxes have responded more weakly. Fourth, all components of the intertemporal condition linking debt to expected discounted surpluses—transfers, spending, tax revenues, and discount factors—display instances where their expected movements are important in establishing equilibrium. Fifth, debt-financed fiscal shocks trigger long lasting dynamics so that short-run multipliers can differ markedly from long-run multipliers, even in their signs.

New Measurement of the Relative Scintillation Efficiency of Xenon Nuclear Recoils Below 10 keV
Liquid xenon is an important detection medium in direct dark matter
experiments, which search for low-energy nuclear recoils produced by the
elastic scattering of WIMPs with quarks. The two existing measurements of the
relative scintillation efficiency of nuclear recoils below 20 keV lead to
inconsistent extrapolations at lower energies. This results in a different
energy scale and thus sensitivity reach of liquid xenon dark matter detectors.
We report a new measurement of the relative scintillation efficiency below 10
keV performed with a liquid xenon scintillation detector, optimized for maximum
light collection. Greater than 95% of the interior surface of this detector was
instrumented with photomultiplier tubes, giving a scintillation yield of 19.6
photoelectrons/keV electron equivalent for 122 keV gamma rays. We find that the
relative scintillation efficiency for nuclear recoils of 5 keV is 0.14, staying
constant around this value up to 10 keV. For higher energy recoils we measure a
value around 20%, consistent with previously reported data. In light of this
new measurement, the XENON10 experiment's results on spin-independent
WIMP-nucleon cross section, which were calculated assuming a constant 0.19
relative scintillation efficiency, change from cm to
cm for WIMPs of mass 100 GeV/c, and from
cm to cm for WIMPs of mass 30
