Measurement of pseudorapidity density of charged particles in proton-proton collisions with the ALICE Pixel detector
This note describes a procedure for measuring the pseudorapidity density distribution of charged particles, based on the tracklets reconstructed with the silicon pixel layers. Results on proton-proton Monte Carlo samples are presented
The pixel Fast-OR signal for the ALICE trigger in p-p collisions
The silicon pixel detector of the ALICE experiment at LHC comprises the two innermost layers of the inner tracking system of the apparatus. It contains 1200 readout chips, each of them corresponding to a 8192 pixel matrix. The single chip outputs a digital Fast-OR signal which is active whenever at least one of the pixels in the matrix records a hit. The 1200 Fast-OR output signals can be used to implement a unique triggering capability: few details on the pixel trigger system and some of the possible applications for p-p collisions are presented
The pixel detector based tracklet reconstruction algorithm in ALICE
This note describes a method to reconstruct signals in the two silicon pixel detector layers compatible with tracks coming from the main interaction vertex, namely tracklets. The basic algorithm strategy and its performance are illustrated
Delta opioid receptor on equine sperm cells: subcellular localization and involvement in sperm motility analyzed by computer assisted sperm analyzer (CASA)

Abstract

Background

Opioid receptors and endogenous opioid peptides act not only in the control of nociceptive pathways, indeed several reports demonstrate the effects of opiates on sperm cell motility and morphology suggesting the importance of these receptors in the modulation of reproduction in mammals. In this study we investigated the expression of delta opioid receptors on equine spermatozoa by western blot/indirect immunofluorescence and its relationship with sperm cell physiology.

Methods

We analyzed viability, motility, capacitation, acrosome reaction and mitochondrial activity in the presence of naltrindole and DPDPE by means of a computer assisted sperm analyzer and a fluorescent confocal microscope. The evaluation of viability, capacitation and acrosome reaction was carried out by the double CTC/Hoechst staining, whereas mitochondrial activity was assessed by means of MitoTracker Orange dye.

Results

We showed that in equine sperm cells, delta opioid receptor is expressed as a doublet of 65 and 50 kDa molecular mass and is localized in the mid piece of tail; we also demonstrated that naltrindole, a delta opioid receptor antagonist, could be utilized in modulating several physiological parameters of the equine spermatozoon in a dose-dependent way. We also found that low concentrations of the antagonist increase sperm motility whereas high concentrations show the opposite effect. Moreover low concentrations hamper capacitation, acrosome reaction and viability even if the percentage of cells with active mitochondria seems to be increased; the opposite effect is exerted at high concentrations. We have also observed that the delta opioid receptor agonist DPDPE is scarcely involved in affecting the same parameters at the employed concentrations.

Conclusions

The results described in this paper add new important details in the comprehension of the mammalian sperm physiology and suggest new insights for improving reproduction and for optimizing equine breeding.</p
A didactic experiment to measure the angular correlation between
A didactic experiment carried out by a group of Physics masters’ students at Bari University is presented. The purpose was the study of the angular correlation between the two gamma rays of 1.17 MeV and 1.33 MeV emitted in typical 60Co decays by means of two NaI(Tl) scintillators equipped with photomultiplier tubes read out by a digital oscilloscope. Several runs were performed with the Co
source at different angles between the two scintillators. Additional runs were performed removing the source, to study the backgrounds from cosmic rays and from gamma rays emitted by the radioactive isotopes 208Tl and 40K. Our results showed that the signal rate changes with the angular separation in agreement with the theoretical expectations by Hamilton dating back to 1940 and with recent measurements
documented in the literature. Students learned to plan and set up an experiment, to take data and to perform basic analysis. Care was taken to understand the limits of our experimental apparatus and possible improvements
Low energy actuation technique of bistable composites for aircraft morphing
Morphing structures for lightweight and energy-efficient aircraft mobile surfaces have been investigated for several years. This paper presents a novel lightweight, passive and low-energy morphing surface concept based on the "lever effect" of a bistable composite plate that can be integrated in aircraft moving surfaces. By using appropriate boundary conditions, it is demonstrated that the magnitude of the activation force on the bistable composite can be tailored to match the differential pressure on the aircraft's airfoil. As a consequence, the bistable laminate can be used as a passive morphing surface. Both numerical simulations and experimental testing are used to prove this concept on a NACA 2412 airfoil structure. The results show that, by choosing proper configuration of constraints, lay-up and aspect ratio of the bistable composite, it is possible to tailor and activate the snap-through mechanism in a passive manner. The proposed concept would save significant weight when compared to an active morphing concept
INFN What Next: Ultra-relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions
This document was prepared by the community that is active in Italy, within
INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare), in the field of
ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The experimental study of the phase
diagram of strongly-interacting matter and of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP)
deconfined state will proceed, in the next 10-15 years, along two directions:
the high-energy regime at RHIC and at the LHC, and the low-energy regime at
FAIR, NICA, SPS and RHIC. The Italian community is strongly involved in the
present and future programme of the ALICE experiment, the upgrade of which will
open, in the 2020s, a new phase of high-precision characterisation of the QGP
properties at the LHC. As a complement of this main activity, there is a
growing interest in a possible future experiment at the SPS, which would target
the search for the onset of deconfinement using dimuon measurements. On a
longer timescale, the community looks with interest at the ongoing studies and
discussions on a possible fixed-target programme using the LHC ion beams and on
the Future Circular Collider.Comment: 99 pages, 56 figure
