Developmental Language Disorder: A Literature Review

    Get PDF
Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a life-long language condition characterized by difficulty using, learning, and understanding language across modalities (speaking, writing, reading) despite average cognitive and intellectual skills. There is no single cause of DLD, though research suggests a genetic component and environmental factors act as possible predictors. Although there is an incidence rate of around 2-3 students in each class of 30, DLD has very little awareness and is significantly under-researched. There are many factors contributing to this. Most notably, DLD is considered a hidden disability as many people learn to mask their symptoms pretty early in life through different self-taught strategies. For example, a case study following a preschooler describes her use of rhythmic gestures as facilitative for speech. The language skills involved and the severity will vary across people. However, the pervasive nature of these difficulties leads to persistent social, emotional, and behavioral concerns with significant effects on educational and career outcomes. A memoir by Damian Quinn details his experiences living with DLD and emphasizes the role of early identification and treatment in reducing adverse long-term outcomes. Targeted treatments and need-based support provided by the speech-language pathologist in collaboration across contexts and communication partners is also an imperative component of effective treatment. More evidence-based research and awareness are needed for DLD to create more uniform treatment guidelines. Given adequate and appropriate support as early as possible, people with DLD can live successful and fulfilling lives

Creation of Laryngeal Grafts from Primary Human Cells and Decellularized Laryngeal Scaffolds

Current reconstruction methods of the laryngotracheal segment fail to replace the complex functions of the human larynx. Bioengineering approaches to reconstruction have been limited by the complex tissue compartmentation of the larynx. We attempted to overcome this limitation by bio-engineering laryngeal grafts from decellularized canine laryngeal scaffolds recellularized with human primary cells under one uniform culture medium condition. First, we generated laryngeal scaffolds with preserved glycosaminoglycan content and biomechanical properties by detergent perfusion-decellularization over nine days. We proofed biocompatibility by absence of a CD3 lymphocyte response to subcutaneously implanted scaffolds in immune-competent rats. We then developed a uniform culture medium that strengthened the endothelial barrier over 5 days after an initial growth phase. Simultaneously, this culture medium supported airway epithelial cell and skeletal myoblast growth while maintaining their full differentiation and maturation potential. We then applied the uniform culture medium composition to whole laryngeal scaffolds seeded with endothelial cells from both carotid arteries and external jugular veins and generated re-endothelialized arterial and venous vascular beds. Under the same culture medium condition, we bio-engineered epithelial monolayers onto laryngeal mucosa and repopulated intrinsic laryngeal muscle. We were then able to demonstrate early muscle formation in heterotopic transplantations in immuno-deficient mice. The model supported the formation of three humanized laryngeal tissue compartments under one uniform culture condition, possibly a key factor in developing, complex, multicellular, ready-to-transplant tissue grafts

The Effects of Twitter Sentiment on Stock Price Returns

Social media are increasingly reflecting and influencing behavior of other complex systems. In this paper we investigate the relations between a well-know micro-blogging platform Twitter and financial markets. In particular, we consider, in a period of 15 months, the Twitter volume and sentiment about the 30 stock companies that form the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) index. We find a relatively low Pearson correlation and Granger causality between the corresponding time series over the entire time period. However, we find a significant dependence between the Twitter sentiment and abnormal returns during the peaks of Twitter volume. This is valid not only for the expected Twitter volume peaks (e.g., quarterly announcements), but also for peaks corresponding to less obvious events. We formalize the procedure by adapting the well-known "event study" from economics and finance to the analysis of Twitter data. The procedure allows to automatically identify events as Twitter volume peaks, to compute the prevailing sentiment (positive or negative) expressed in tweets at these peaks, and finally to apply the "event study" methodology to relate them to stock returns. We show that sentiment polarity of Twitter peaks implies the direction of cumulative abnormal returns. The amount of cumulative abnormal returns is relatively low (about 1-2%), but the dependence is statistically significant for several days after the events

Changes in the site distribution of malignant melanoma in South East Scotland (1979–2002)

Scottish Melanoma Group (SMG) data on 2790 melanoma (MM) cases in South East Scotland over a 24-year time period were analysed in four periods each of 6 years duration grouped into frequently exposed, intermittently exposed, and always covered sites. Incidence increased significantly over time with females having a higher incidence rate than males. In both sexes, the proportion of cases seen on the posterior trunk and arm increased significantly (P<0.001), but declines were seen in the proportion of leg tumours in males (P=0.09) and of head tumours in females (P=0.011). Although the proportion of cases decreased for certain sites, the actual MM incidence increased at all sites. A significant increase in incidence occurred at usually and always covered sites (P<0.001 and P<0.001, respectively) in females and at usually covered sites in males (P<0.001)

Conventional and molecular epidemiology of Tuberculosis in Manitoba

BACKGROUND: To describe the demographic and geographic distribution of tuberculosis (TB) in Manitoba, thus determining risk factors associated with clustering and higher incidence rates in distinct subpopulations. METHODS: Data from the Manitoba TB Registry was compiled to generate a database on 855 patients with tuberculosis and their contacts from 1992–1999. Recovered isolates of M. tuberculosis were typed by IS6110 restriction fragment length polymorphisms. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to identify risk factors involved in clustering. RESULTS: A trend to clustering was observed among the Canadian-born treaty Aboriginal subgroup in contrast to the foreign-born. The dominant type, designated fingerprint type 1, accounts for 25.8% of total cases and 75.3% of treaty Aboriginal cases. Among type 1 patients residing in urban areas, 98.9% lived in Winnipeg. In rural areas, 92.8% lived on Aboriginal reserves. Statistical models revealed that significant risk factors for acquiring clustered tuberculosis are gender, age, ethnic origin and residence. Those at increased risk are: males (p < 0.05); those under age 65 (p < 0.01 for each age subgroup); treaty Aboriginals (p < 0.001), and those living on reserve land (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Molecular typing of isolates in conjunction with contact tracing data supports the notion of the largest ongoing transmission of a single strain of TB within the treaty-status population of Canada recorded to date. This data demonstrates the necessity of continued surveillance of countries with low prevalence of the disease in order to determine and target high-risk populations for concentrated prevention and control measures

The Islamic Law in the Historical Study
