    Formal lumping of polynomial differential equations through approximate equivalences

    It is well known that exact notions of model abstraction and reduction for dynamical systems may not be robust enough in practice because they are highly sensitive to the specific choice of parameters. In this paper we consider this problem for nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with polynomial derivatives. We introduce a model reduction technique based on approximate differential equivalence, i.e., a partition of the set of ODE variables that performs an aggregation when the variables are governed by nearby derivatives. We develop algorithms to (i) compute the largest approximate differential equivalence; (ii) construct an approximately reduced model from the original one via an appropriate perturbation of the coefficients of the polynomials; and (iii) provide a formal certificate on the quality of the approximation as an error bound, computed as an over-approximation of the reachable set of the reduced model. Finally, we apply approximate differential equivalences to case studies on electric circuits, biological models, and polymerization reaction networks

    The reduction of interior noise level in the transportation sector is a big problem to cope with in view to increase the comfort of passengers. For this reason a great emphasis from the research community is devoted to develop new technology which are able to satisfy the mechanical requirements with concrete benefits from the acoustic point of view. Currently, it does not exist a solution for wideband range of frequency. Indeed, porous materials are characterized by outstanding dissipation in the high frequency range but they exhibit poor performance in the low and medium frequency range, where instead resonant cavities systems have the best performances but with narrow-band sound absorption. For this reason, the design and development of new materials which offers a good acoustic absorption over a wide range of frequencies is requested. In this paper, a hybrid metamaterial is designed, by coupling resonant cavities with micro-porous material and obtained through additive manufacturing technique which enables to model complex geometries that could not be feasible with classical manufacturing. Numerical and experimental studies have been conducted on the manufactured samples of PLA, with an interesting focus on the effect of each parameter which affects the absorption properties

    Quantitative determination of free D-Asp, L-Asp and N-methyl-D-aspartate in mouse brain tissues by chiral separation and Multiple Reaction Monitoring tandem mass spectrometry

    Several studies have suggested that free D-Asp has a crucial role in N-methyl D-Asp receptor-mediated neurotransmission playing very important functions in physiological and pathological processes. This paper describes the development of an analytical procedure for the direct and simultaneous determination of free D-Asp, L-Asp and N-methyl D-Asp in specimens of different mouse brain tissues using chiral LC-MS/MS in Multiple Reaction Monitoring scan mode. After comparing three procedures and different buffers and extraction solvents, a simple preparation procedure was selected the analytes of extraction. The method was validated by analyzing L-Asp, D-Asp and N-methyl D-Asp recovery at different spiked concentrations (50, 100 and 200 pg/μl) yielding satisfactory recoveries (75-110%), and good repeatability. Limits of detection (LOD) resulted to be 0.52 pg/μl for D-Asp, 0.46 pg/μl for L-Asp and 0.54 pg/μl for NMDA, respectively. Limits of quantification (LOQ) were 1.57 pg/μl for D-Asp, 1.41 pg/μl for L-Asp and 1.64 pg/μl for NMDA, respectively. Different concentration levels were used for constructing the calibration curves which showed good linearity. The validated method was then successfully applied to the simultaneous detection of D-Asp, L-Asp and NMDA in mouse brain tissues. The concurrent, sensitive, fast, and reproducible measurement of these metabolites in brain tissues will be useful to correlate the amount of free D-Asp with relevant neurological processes, making the LC-MS/MS MRM method well suited, not only for research work but also for clinical analyses

    Didactic and narrative persuasion: An experiment to promote colorectal cancer screening

    We tested whether a didactic and a narrative video (i.e. educational content and personal stories versus irrelevant information) could boost colorectal cancer (CRC) screening intention directly and through cognitive predictors of CRC screening behavior. We also tested whether exposure to a story changed participants' affective forecasting, reducing the perception of negative emotions associated with CRC screening (disgust, embarrassment, and fear). The study was conducted online with a between-participants design and recruiting a convenience sample (N =375). We found that, compared with watching the control video, being exposed to the narrative video about CRC screening was indirectly associated with greater screening inten- tion via vicarious experience and positive attitudes, whereas watching the didactic video was positively associated with CRC screening intention only among participants who had received an invitation letter but did not get screened, and among those yet to receive an invitation to screen. In the latter group, screening intention was boosted through positive attitudes. Our findings do not confirm that stories change affective forecasting, but narration likely fosters messages acceptance through vicarious experience. We also found support for the effectiveness of physicians' rec- ommendations in promoting CRC screening, an intervention that might be effectively administered through a generalized, cost-effective video

    Vaccine hesitancy (VH) is known to play a relevant role in thwarting the efforts toward reaching satisfactory influenza vaccination coverage, and has caused similar difficulties during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to describe the phenomenon and produce insights on the reasons behind VH. A survey was administered between December 2020 and February 2021 to adults living in the cities of Bologna and Palermo. Of the 443 subjects enrolled, 47.3% were likely to get the influenza vaccination, while 75.6% were willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination. The most frequent determinants that motivated the willingness to get the COVID-19 vaccine were trust in the safety of vaccines and belief that the vaccine is an effective tool. As for people’s unwillingness to be vaccinated, being exposed to information that produced doubts about the vaccine and lack of trust in a newly developed vaccine were the most frequently involved determinants. Statistically significant positive associations were found between the willingness to be vaccinated and postgraduate education and the propensity towards influenza vaccination. A negative association with being over 40 years old and of female gender was also found. These results might have an impact in better understanding individual reasons behind VH, identifying which categories are more exposed to it and which strategies should be implemented

    Triglyceride/HDL ratio and its impact on the risk of diabetes mellitus development during ART

    OBJECTIVES: Our primary aim was to study diabetes mellitus (DM) arising during combination ART (cART) and to attempt to identify associations between these cases and triglycerides (TRG) and the TRG to HDL-cholesterol (TRG/HDL) ratio. Our secondary aim was to analyse the association between DM development and hepatic fibrosis.METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study. Patients from the Icona Foundation study initiating first-line cART between 1997 and 2013 were selected and observed until new-onset DM or most recent clinical follow-up. The predictive value of TRG and TRG/HDL ratio levels on DM was evaluated using multivariable Poisson regression models.RESULTS: Three-thousand, five-hundred and forty-six patients (males, 73.7%; median age, 38 years; median BMI, 23.1 kg/m(2); and hepatitis C virus antibody positive, 22.1%) were included. Of these, 80 developed DM over 13 911 person-years of follow-up (PYFU), corresponding to 5.7 cases per 1000 PYFU (95% CI = 4.6-7.1). At multivariable analysis, latest TRG/HDL ratio, when high, was associated with significant increases in DM risk [relative risk (RR) = 1.63; 95% CI = 1.32-2.01 per 10 points higher], while current TRG, in contrast, was associated with new-onset DM only at crude analysis. Advanced liver fibrosis (defined as fibrosis-4 index >3.25) was also shown to be an independent risk factor for DM (RR = 2.91; 95% CI = 1.10-7.72).CONCLUSIONS: High TRG/HDL ratio predicted risk of new-onset DM, independently of other traditional risk factors. Furthermore, our findings suggest that advanced hepatic fibrosis, estimated using the fibrosis-4 score, could provide an additional predictor for DM

    Positioning of darunavir/cobicistat-containing antiretroviral regimens in real life: Results from a large multicentre observational prospective cohort (SCOLTA)

    Background: Study aim was to evaluate the safety and durability of darunavir/cobicistat (DRV/c) in a real life setting. Methods: Multicentre prospective cohort study performed in the context of SCOLTA (Surveillance Cohort Long-Term Toxicity Antiretrovirals). Patients were evaluated at baseline, week 24 and 48. Changes were evaluated using the paired t test or signed rank test. The multivariable analysis was performed using a general linear model, after ranking of not normally distributed variables. Results: A total of 249 patients were included, 72 (29%) were in DRV/c-based dual therapies (DT). Hypercholesterolemia, HC, (total cholesterol (TC) ≥ 200 mg/dL or low density-C (LDL-C) ≥ 130 or statin use) was present in 121 (48.6%) and hypertriglyceridemia, (triglycerides (TG) ≥ 200 mg/dl or fibrate use) in 41 (16.5%) patients. Blood lipid profile did not change significantly in either the global population or patients with HC. After a median observation of 17 months (IQR 13-20), 59 (25.3%) patients discontinued DRV/c, of which 13 were in DT. The durability DT resulted higher than that of triple therapy (log-rank test p = 0.01). Main reasons for stopping DRV/c were simplification (15 patients), adverse events (13 patients), planned discontinuation for treatment initiation with DAA (4 patients), treatment failure (2 patients); death (2 patients), other causes (10 patients). Twenty-six were lost to follow-up. Conclusions: DRV/c was safe and well tolerated. Dual therapies showed a better profile of tolerability and a longer durability compared to triple therapies

    Deep Synoptic Array Science: First FRB and Host Galaxy Catalog

    Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are a powerful and mysterious new class of transient that are luminous enough to be detected at cosmological distances. By associating FRBs to host galaxies, we can measure intrinsic and environmental properties that test FRB origin models, in addition to using them as precise probes of distant cosmic gas. The 110-antenna Deep Synoptic Array (DSA-110) is a radio interferometer built to maximize the rate at which it can simultaneously detect and localize FRBs. Here, we present the first sample of FRBs and host galaxies discovered by the DSA-110. This sample of 11 FRBs is the largest uniform sample of localized FRBs to date and is selected based on association to host galaxies identified in optical imaging by Pan-STARRS1 and follow-up spectroscopy at the Palomar and Keck observatories. These FRBs have not been observed to repeat and their radio properties (dispersion, temporal scattering, energy) are similar to that of the known non-repeating FRB population. Most host galaxies have ongoing star formation, as has been identified before for FRB hosts. In contrast to prior work, a large fraction (four of eleven) of the new sample are more massive than 1011^{11}\ M⊙_{\odot} and most had elevated star formation rates more than 100 Myr in their past. The distribution of star-formation history across this host-galaxy sample shows that the delay-time distribution is wide, spanning from ∼100\sim100\,Myr to ∼10\sim10\,Gyr. This requires the existence of one or more progenitor formation channels associated with old stellar populations, such as the binary evolution of compact objects.Comment: 21 pages.
