Uniqueness and Causes of the California Drought
AbstractThe current California drought, which is part of the abnormal to extreme drought conditions affecting much of southwest USA, has lasted for 4 years (2011/12 – 2014/15). It has intensified steadily to what at present is likely the worst Californian drought since reliable instrumental records began in 1895. The uniqueness of this drought is demonstrated by assessing the Oct. – Mar. wet seasons for instances <25th percentile of precipitation and >75th percentile in average temperature. Of the 8 seasons since 1895 that met these percentile conditions, only the present drought satisfied these criteria for more than one season. Predictions of California precipitation and temperature anomalies were made using linear regression (LR), and support vector regression (SVR) with several linear and non-linear kernels, applied to a range of climate drivers and local sea surface temperatures (SSTs). Cross-validated correlations were low (LR) to moderate (SVR) for precipitation, but were high (>0.7) for both temperature LR and SVR, with SVR marginally exceeding LR. The leading predictors were global warming and local SSTs near the California coast. Finally, the cool seasons were classified as dry/not-dry and hot/not-hot using logistic regressions and k-means classification clustering. Again, it was found that predictability was low for dry/not-dry classes but was high (>70% correct) for hot/not-hot classes. This research suggests that the climate system has warmed sufficiently so that drought can no longer be assessed solely by the lack of precipitation, but must consider the combination of low precipitation and abnormal warmth
Scaling Behaviour and Complexity of the Portevin-Le Chatelier Effect
The plastic deformation of dilute alloys is often accompanied by plastic
instabilities due to dynamic strain aging and dislocation interaction. The
repeated breakaway of dislocations from and their recapture by solute atoms
leads to stress serrations and localized strain in the strain controlled
tensile tests, known as the Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect. In this present
work, we analyse the stress time series data of the observed PLC effect in the
constant strain rate tensile tests on Al-2.5%Mg alloy for a wide range of
strain rates at room temperature. The scaling behaviour of the PLC effect was
studied using two complementary scaling analysis methods: the finite variance
scaling method and the diffusion entropy analysis. From these analyses we could
establish that in the entire span of strain rates, PLC effect showed Levy walk
property. Moreover, the multiscale entropy analysis is carried out on the
stress time series data observed during the PLC effect to quantify the
complexity of the distinct spatiotemporal dynamical regimes. It is shown that
for the static type C band, the entropy is very low for all the scales compared
to the hopping type B and the propagating type A bands. The results are
interpreted considering the time and length scales relevant to the effect.Comment: 35 pages, 6 figure

An invitation to grieve: reconsidering critical incident responses by support teams in the school setting
This paper proposes that consideration could be given to an invitational intervention rather than an expectational intervention when support personnel respond to a critical incident in schools. Intuitively many practitioners know that it is necessary for guidance/counselling personnel to intervene in schools in and following times of trauma. Most educational authorities in Australia have mandated the formulation of a critical incident intervention plan. This paper defines the term critical incident and then outlines current intervention processes, discussing the efficacy of debriefing interventions. Recent literature suggests that even though it is accepted that a planned intervention is necessary, there is scant evidence as to the effectiveness of debriefing interventions in stemming later symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder. The authors of this paper advocate for an expressive therapy intervention that is invitational rather than expectational, arguing that not all people respond to trauma in the same way and to expect that they will need to recall and retell what has happened is most likely a dangerous assumption. A model of invitation using Howard Gardner’s (1983) multiple intelligences is proposed so that students are invited to grieve and understand emotionally what is happening to them following a critical incident
Robust, reproducible, industrialized, standard membrane feeding assay for assessing the transmission blocking activity of vaccines and drugs against Plasmodium falciparum.
BackgroundA vaccine that interrupts malaria transmission (VIMT) would be a valuable tool for malaria control and elimination. One VIMT approach is to identify sexual erythrocytic and mosquito stage antigens of the malaria parasite that induce immune responses targeted at disrupting parasite development in the mosquito. The standard Plasmodium falciparum membrane-feeding assay (SMFA) is used to assess transmission-blocking activity (TBA) of antibodies against candidate immunogens and of drugs targeting the mosquito stages. To develop its P. falciparum sporozoite (SPZ) products, Sanaria has industrialized the production of P. falciparum-infected Anopheles stephensi mosquitoes, incorporating quantitative analyses of oocyst and P. falciparum SPZ infections as part of the manufacturing process.MethodsThese capabilities were exploited to develop a robust, reliable, consistent SMFA that was used to assess 188 serum samples from animals immunized with the candidate vaccine immunogen, Pfs25, targeting P. falciparum mosquito stages. Seventy-four independent SMFAs were performed. Infection intensity (number of oocysts/mosquito) and infection prevalence (percentage of mosquitoes infected with oocysts) were compared between mosquitoes fed cultured gametocytes plus normal human O(+) serum (negative control), anti-Pfs25 polyclonal antisera (MRA39 or MRA38, at a final dilution in the blood meal of 1:54 as positive control), and test sera from animals immunized with Pfs25 (at a final dilution in the blood meal of 1:9).ResultsSMFA negative controls consistently yielded high infection intensity (mean = 46.1 oocysts/midgut, range of positives 3.7-135.6) and infection prevalence (mean = 94.2%, range 71.4-100.0) and in positive controls, infection intensity was reduced by 81.6% (anti-Pfs25 MRA39) and 97.0% (anti-Pfs25 MRA38), and infection prevalence was reduced by 12.9 and 63.5%, respectively. A range of TBAs was detected among the 188 test samples assayed in duplicate. Consistent administration of infectious gametocytes to mosquitoes within and between assays was achieved, and the TBA of anti-Pfs25 control antibodies was highly reproducible.ConclusionsThese results demonstrate a robust capacity to perform the SMFA in a medium-to-high throughput format, suitable for assessing large numbers of experimental samples of candidate antibodies or drugs
Independent evaluation of a simple clinical prediction rule to identify right ventricular dysfunction in patients with shortness of breath
BACKGROUND:
Many patients have unexplained persistent dyspnea after negative computed tomographic pulmonary angiography (CTPA). We hypothesized that many of these patients have isolated right ventricular (RV) dysfunction from treatable causes. We previously derived a clinical decision rule (CDR) for predicting RV dysfunction consisting of persistent dyspnea and normal CTPA, finding that 53% of CDR-positive patients had isolated RV dysfunction. Our goal is to validate this previously derived CDR by measuring the prevalence of RV dysfunction and outcomes in dyspneic emergency department patients.
METHODS:
A secondary analysis of a prospective observational multicenter study that enrolled patients presenting with suspected PE was performed. We included patients with persistent dyspnea, a nonsignificant CTPA, and formal echo performed. Right ventricular dysfunction was defined as RV hypokinesis and/or dilation with or without moderate to severe tricuspid regurgitation.
RESULTS:
A total of 7940 patients were enrolled. Two thousand six hundred sixteen patients were analyzed after excluding patients without persistent dyspnea and those with a significant finding on CTPA. One hundred ninety eight patients had echocardiography performed as standard care. Of those, 19% (95% confidence interval [CI], 14%-25%) and 33% (95% CI, 25%-42%) exhibited RV dysfunction and isolated RV dysfunction, respectively. Patients with isolated RV dysfunction or overload were more likely than those without RV dysfunction to have a return visit to the emergency department within 45 days for the same complaint (39% vs 18%; 95% CI of the difference, 4%-38%).
CONCLUSION:
This simple clinical prediction rule predicted a 33% prevalence of isolated RV dysfunction or overload. Patients with isolated RV dysfunction had higher recidivism rates and a trend toward worse outcomes
Long distance effects in weak radiative decays of D-mesons
We present a detailed analysis of the transitions, using a
model which combines heavy quark effective theory and the chiral Lagrangian
approach and includes symmetry breaking. We notice that in addition to the
previously considered s - channel annihilation and t - channel W - exchange,
there is a long distance penguin - like contribution in the t
- channel of Cabibbo - suppressed modes. Its magnitude is determined by the
size of symmetry breaking which we calculate with a vector dominance approach.
Although smaller in magnitude, the penguin - like contribution would lead to
sizeable effects in case of cancellations among the other contributions to the
amplitude. Thus, it may invalidate suggested tests for beyond the standard
model effects in these decays. We also indicate the range of expectations for
