    Heavy Quark Radiative Energy Loss - Applications to RHIC

    Heavy quark energy loss in a hot QCD plasma is computed taking into account the competing effects due to suppression of zeroth order gluon radiation bellow the plasma frequency and the enhancement of gluon radiation due to transition energy loss and medium induced Bremsstrahlung. Heavy quark medium induced radiative energy loss is derived to all orders in opacity, (L/λg)n(L/\lambda_g)^n. Numerical evaluation of the energy loss suggest small suppression of high p⊥p_\perp charm quarks, and therefore provide a possible explanation for the null effects observed by PHENIX in the prompt electron spectrum in Au+AuAu+Au as s=130\sqrt{s}=130 and 200 AGeV.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, Contributed to 17th International Conference on Ultra Relativistic Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions (Quark Matter 2004), Oakland, California, 11-17 Jan 200

    A stochastic SICA epidemic model for HIV transmission

    We propose a stochastic SICA epidemic model for HIV transmission, described by stochastic ordinary differential equations, and discuss its perturbation by environmental white noise. Existence and uniqueness of the global positive solution to the stochastic HIV system is proven, and conditions under which extinction and persistence in mean hold, are given.     Open Charm and Beauty at Ultrarelativistic Heavy Ion Colliders

    Important goals of RHIC and LHC experiments with ion beams include the creation and study of new forms of matter, such as the Quark Gluon Plasma. Heavy quark production and attenuation will provide unique tomographic probes of that matter. We predict the suppression pattern of open charm and beauty in Au+AuAu+Au collisions at RHIC and LHC energies based on the DGLV formalism of radiative energy loss. A cancelation between effects due to the s\sqrt{s} energy dependence of the high pTp_T slope and heavy quark energy loss is predicted to lead to surprising similarity of heavy quark suppression at RHIC and LHC.Comment: 4 pages, 6 *.eps files combined into 4 figure

    The use of medicinal plants is old as the existence of mankind. According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, about 80% of world population are using products based on medicinal herbs. Phytotherapy is based on the use of herbal drugs and medicinal products for the purpose of prevention and treatment. Rational phytotherapy is a modern concept of herbal medicines using, which are made of standardized herbal extracts. The quality of each final product is guaranteed by the use of raw materials of a standard quality, defined process of production, and validated equipment. Quality control of herbal drugs and herbal isolates (tinctures, extracts, and essential oils) is done according to the requirements of Pharmacopoeia and other relevant regulations. The scope of phytopreparation quality control depends on its pharmaceutical form. The formulation of a new phytopreparation is a process that has strictly defined phases: from analysis of literature and market, through defining recipes, validation of the production process, quality control of a final product to the preparation of technological and registration documents. The aim of this chapter is to present the process of herbal preparations production from selecting plant raw materials to herbal remedies (on the examples of making tea, tea mixture, drops, gels, and capsules)

    Computer simulation of low-energy excitations in amorphous silicon with voids

    We use empirical molecular dynamics technique to study the low-energy vibrations in a large 4096 atom model for pure amorphous silicon and a set of models with voids of different size based on it. Numerical vibrational eigenvalues and eigenvectors for our models are obtained by exact diagonalization of their dynamical matrices. Our calculations show that localized low-energy vibrational excitations of rather complex structure are present in amorphous silicon models with voids. According to their spatial localization patterns we make an attempt to classify these excitations as modes associated with the void and "mixed" modes associated with the interaction of the void with strained regions of silicon network.Comment: Was presented at ICAMS18 conference, Snowbird UT, August 1999.     Magnetic and electric contributions to the energy loss in a dynamical QCD medium

    The computation of radiative energy loss in a finite size QCD medium with dynamical constituents is a key ingredient for obtaining reliable predictions for jet quenching in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. It was previously shown that energy loss in dynamical QCD medium is significantly higher compared to static QCD medium. To understand this difference, we here analyze magnetic and electric contributions to energy loss in dynamical QCD medium. We find that the significantly higher energy loss in the dynamical case is entirely due to appearance of magnetic contribution in the dynamical medium. While for asymptotically high energies, the energy loss in static and dynamical medium approach the same value, we find that the physical origin of the energy loss in these two cases is different.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Heavy-to-light ratios as a test of medium-induced energy loss at RHIC and the LHC

    The ratio of nuclear modification factors of high-pTp_T heavy-flavored mesons tolight-flavored hadrons (heavy-to-light ratio) is shown to be a sensitive tool to test medium-induced energy loss at RHIC and LHC energies. Heavy-to-light ratios of DD mesons at RHIC in the region 7<pT<127<p_T<12 GeV, and of DD and BB mesons at the LHC in the region 10<pT<2010<p_T<20 GeV, are proposed for such a test. Finally, the different contributions to the nuclear modification factor for electrons at RHIC are analyzed.     MicroRNA-Regulated Signaling Pathways: Potential Biomarkers for Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma

    Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the most aggressive and invasive type of pancreatic cancer (PCa) and is expected to be the second most common cause of cancer-associated deaths. The high mortality rate is due to the asymptomatic progression of the clinical features until the advanced stages of the disease and the limited effectiveness of the current therapeutics. Aberrant expression of several microRNAs (miRs/miRNAs) has been related to PDAC progression and thus they could be potential early diagnostic, prognostic, and/or therapeutic predictors for PDAC. miRs are small (18 to 24 nucleotides long) non-coding RNAs, which regulate the expression of key genes by targeting their 3′-untranslated mRNA region. Increased evidence has also suggested that the chemoresistance of PDAC cells is associated with metabolic alterations. Metabolic stress and the dysfunctionality of systems to compensate for the altered metabolic status of PDAC cells is the foundation for cellular damage. Current data have implicated multiple systems as hallmarks of PDAC development, such as glutamine redox imbalance, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Hence, both the aberrant expression of miRs and dysregulation in metabolism can have unfavorable effects in several biological processes, such as apoptosis, cell proliferation, growth, survival, stress response, angiogenesis, chemoresistance, invasion, and migration. Therefore, due to these dismal statistics, it is crucial to develop beneficial therapeutic strategies based on an improved understanding of the biology of both miRs and metabolic mediators. This review focuses on miR-mediated pathways and therapeutic resistance mechanisms in PDAC and evaluates the impact of metabolic alterations in the progression of PDAC
