Polyvinyl alcohol cross-linked with two aldehydes
A film forming polyvinyl alcohol resin is admixed, in aqueous solution, with a dialdehyde crosslinking agent which is capable of crosslinking the polyvinyl alcohol resin and a water soluble acid aldehyde containing a reactive aldehyde group capable of reacting with hydroxyl groups in the polyvinyl alcohol resin and an ionizable acid hydrogen atom. The dialdehyde is present in an amount sufficient to react with from 1 to 20% by weight of the theoretical amount required to react with all of the hydroxyl groups of the polyvinyl alcohol. The amount of acid aldehyde is from 1 to 50% by weight, same basis, and is sufficient to reduce the pH of the aqueous admixture to 5 or less. The admixture is then formed into a desired physical shape, such as by casting a sheet or film, and the shaped material is then heated to simultaneously dry and crosslink the article
Quantum Yang-Mills gravity in flat space-time and effective curved space-time for motions of classical objects
Yang-Mills gravity with translational gauge group T(4) in flat space-time
implies a simple self-coupling of gravitons and a truly conserved
energy-momentum tensor. Its consistency with experiments crucially depends on
an interesting property that an `effective Riemannian metric tensor' emerges in
and only in the geometric-optics limit of the photon and particle wave
equations. We obtain Feynman rules for a coupled graviton-fermion system,
including a general graviton propagator with two gauge parameters and the
interaction of ghost particles. The equation of motion of macroscopic objects,
as an N-body system, is demonstrated as the geometric-optics limit of the
fermion wave equation. We discuss a relativistic Hamilton-Jacobi equation with
an `effective Riemann metric tensor' for the classical particles.Comment: 20 pages, to be published in "The European Physical Journal -

Reduction for constrained variational problems on 3D null curves
We consider the optimal control problem for null curves in de Sitter 3-space
defined by a functional which is linear in the curvature of the trajectory. We
show how techniques based on the method of moving frames and exterior
differential systems, coupled with the reduction procedure for systems with a
Lie group of symmetries lead to the integration by quadratures of the
extremals. Explicit solutions are found in terms of elliptic functions and
integrals.Comment: 16 page
Sagnac Interferometer Enhanced Particle Tracking in Optical Tweezers
A setup is proposed to enhance tracking of very small particles, by using
optical tweezers embedded within a Sagnac interferometer. The achievable
signal-to-noise ratio is shown to be enhanced over that for a standard optical
tweezers setup. The enhancement factor increases asymptotically as the
interferometer visibility approaches 100%, but is capped at a maximum given by
the ratio of the trapping field intensity to the detector saturation threshold.
For an achievable visibility of 99%, the signal-to-noise ratio is enhanced by a
factor of 200, and the minimum trackable particle size is 2.4 times smaller
than without the interferometer
Undetermined states: how to find them and their applications
We investigate the undetermined sets consisting of two-level, multi-partite
pure quantum states, whose reduced density matrices give absolutely no
information of their original states. Two approached of finding these quantum
states are proposed. One is to establish the relation between codewords of the
stabilizer quantum error correction codes (SQECCs) and the undetermined states.
The other is to study the local complementation rules of the graph states. As
an application, the undetermined states can be exploited in the quantum secret
sharing scheme. The security is guaranteed by their undetermineness.Comment: 6 pages, no figur
Minimum-error discrimination between symmetric mixed quantum states
We provide a solution of finding optimal measurement strategy for
distinguishing between symmetric mixed quantum states. It is assumed that the
matrix elements of at least one of the symmetric quantum states are all real
and nonnegative in the basis of the eigenstates of the symmetry operator.Comment: 10 page
Comment on "Quantum Decoherence in Disordered Mesoscopic Systems"
In a recent paper, Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 1074 (1998), Golubev and Zaikin (GZ)
found that ``zero-point fluctuations of electrons'' contribute to the dephasing
rate extracted from the magnetoresistance. As a result, the dephasing rate
remains finite at zero temperature. GZ claimed that their results ``agree well
with the experimental data''. We point out that the GZ results are incompatible
with (i) conventional perturbation theory of the effects of interaction on weak
localization (WL), and (ii) with the available experimental data. More detailed
criticism of GZ findings can be found in cond-mat/9808053.Comment: 1 page, no figure
Unitarity and the Hilbert space of quantum gravity
Under the premises that physics is unitary and black hole evaporation is
complete (no remnants, no topology change), there must exist a one-to-one
correspondence between states on future null and timelike infinity and on any
earlier spacelike Cauchy surface (e.g., slices preceding the formation of the
hole). We show that these requirements exclude a large set of semiclassical
spacetime configurations from the Hilbert space of quantum gravity. In
particular, the highest entropy configurations, which account for almost all of
the volume of semiclassical phase space, would not have quantum counterparts,
i.e. would not correspond to allowed states in a quantum theory of gravity.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, revtex; minor changes in v2 (version published in

Marketing strategy for small application service providers in a new market
Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) including small application service providers (ASPs) are playing an increasingly important role in the development of global economies particularly in developing countries like China. This paper studies marketing strategies of small application service providers (ASP) with a focus on what the important factors are to establish a new ASP business in China. An analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method is used to analyse critical factors of the ASP industry. The research surveyed CEOs or senior managers who are working in ASP firms, to identify how a marketing strategy can be developed for an ASP firm to start business in China. It is found that the localisation of middle level managers, the localisation of products and services, the protection of intellectual property (IP), and infrastructure and transportation system are the most important factors for small ASP firms to do business in China.<br /
