An experimental study of a self-confined flow with ring-vorticity distribution
A new form of self-confined flow was investigated in which a recirculation zone forms away from any solid boundary. An inviscid flow analysis indicated that in a purely meridional axisymmetric flow a stationary, spherical, self-confined region should occur in the center of a streamlined divergent-convergent enlargement zone. The spherical confinement region would be at rest and at constant pressure. Experimental investigations were carried out in a specially built test apparatus to establish the desired confined flow. The streamlined divergent-convergent interior shape of the test section was fabricated according to the theoretical calculation for a particular streamline. The required inlet vorticity distribution was generated by producing a velocity profile with a shaped gauze screen in the straight pipe upstream of the test section. Fluid speed and turbulence intensity were measured with a constant-temperature hot-wire anemometer system. The measured results indicated a very orderly and stable flow field
Effective hadronic Lagrangian for charm mesons
An effective hadronic Lagrangian including the charm mesons is introduced to
study their interactions in hadronic matter. Using coupling constants that are
determined either empirically or by the SU(4) symmetry, we have evaluated the
absorption cross sections of and the scattering cross sections of
and by and mesons.Comment: 5 pages, 4 eps figures, presented at Strangeness 2000, Berkeley. Uses

Towards Long-endurance Flight: Design and Implementation of a Variable-pitch Gasoline-engine Quadrotor
Majority of today's fixed-pitch, electric-power quadrotors have short flight
endurance ( 1 hour) which greatly limits their applications. This paper
presents a design methodology for the construction of a long-endurance
quadrotor using variable-pitch rotors and a gasoline-engine. The methodology
consists of three aspects. Firstly, the rotor blades and gasoline engine are
selected as a pair, so that sufficient lift can be comfortably provided by the
engine. Secondly, drivetrain and airframe are designed. Major challenges
include airframe vibration minimization and power transmission from one engine
to four rotors while keeping alternate rotors contra-rotating. Lastly, a PD
controller is tuned to facilitate preliminary flight tests. The methodology has
been verified by the construction and successful flight of our gasoline
quadrotor prototype, which is designed to have a flight time of 2 to 3 hours
and a maximum take-off weight of 10 kg.Comment: 6 page
Statistical Modelling of Information Sharing: Community, Membership and Content
File-sharing systems, like many online and traditional information sharing
communities (e.g. newsgroups, BBS, forums, interest clubs), are dynamical
systems in nature. As peers get in and out of the system, the information
content made available by the prevailing membership varies continually in
amount as well as composition, which in turn affects all peers' join/leave
decisions. As a result, the dynamics of membership and information content are
strongly coupled, suggesting interesting issues about growth, sustenance and
stability.
In this paper, we propose to study such communities with a simple statistical
model of an information sharing club. Carrying their private payloads of
information goods as potential supply to the club, peers join or leave on the
basis of whether the information they demand is currently available.
Information goods are chunked and typed, as in a file sharing system where
peers contribute different files, or a forum where messages are grouped by
topics or threads. Peers' demand and supply are then characterized by
statistical distributions over the type domain.
This model reveals interesting critical behaviour with multiple equilibria. A
sharp growth threshold is derived: the club may grow towards a sustainable
equilibrium only if the value of an order parameter is above the threshold, or
shrink to emptiness otherwise. The order parameter is composite and comprises
the peer population size, the level of their contributed supply, the club's
efficiency in information search, the spread of supply and demand over the type
domain, as well as the goodness of match between them.Comment: accepted in International Symposium on Computer Performance,

Performance Analysis of a Dual-Hop Cooperative Relay Network with Co-Channel Interference
This paper analyzes the performance of a dual-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) cooperative relay network in the presence of direct link between the source and destination and multiple co-channel interferences (CCIs) at the relay. Specifically, we derive the new analytical expressions for the moment generating function (MGF) of the output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and the average symbol error rate (ASER) of the relay network. Computer simulations are given to confirm the validity of the analytical results and show the effects of direct link and interference on the considered AF relay network
Modulation of sterol homeostasis by the Cdc42p effectors Cla4p and Ste20p in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae
This article is available open access through the publisher’s website at the link below. Copyright @ 2009 The Authors. The conserved Rho-type GTPase Cdc42p is a key regulator of signal transduction and polarity in eukaryotic cells. In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Cdc42p promotes polarized growth through the p21-activated kinases Ste20p and Cla4p. Previously, we demonstrated that Ste20p forms a complex with Erg4p, Cbr1p and Ncp1p, which all catalyze important steps in sterol biosynthesis. CLA4 interacts genetically with ERG4 and NCP1. Furthermore, Erg4p, Ncp1p and Cbr1p play important roles in cell polarization during vegetative growth, mating and filamentation. As Ste20p and Cla4p are involved in these processes it seems likely that sterol biosynthetic enzymes and p21-activated kinases act in related pathways. Here, we demonstrate that the deletion of either STE20 or CLA4 results in increased levels of sterols. In addition, higher concentrations of steryl esters, the storage form of sterols, were observed in cla4Δ cells. CLA4 expression from a multicopy plasmid reduces enzyme activity of Are2p, the major steryl ester synthase, under aerobic conditions. Altogether, our data suggest that Ste20p and Cla4p may function as negative modulators of sterol biosynthesis. Moreover, Cla4p has a negative effect on steryl ester formation. As sterol homeostasis is crucial for cell polarization, Ste20p and Cla4p may regulate cell polarity in part through the modulation of sterol homeostasis.Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and the Austrian FWF
