    Phosphonium cation-based ionic liquids as neat lubricants: Physicochemical and tribological performance

    © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.This paper studies physicochemical properties (density, viscosity, corrosion, thermogravimetry, and conductivity) and tribological behavior of five phosphonium cation-based ionic liquids ([P66614][BEHP], [P66614][C8C8PO2], [P66614][NTf2], [P44414][DBS], and [P4442][DEP]) as neat lubricants within steel-steel contact. A reciprocating ball-on-disc configuration was used to perform tribological tests. Worn surfaces were analyzed by confocal microscopy, SEM, EDS and XPS. Main results showed that: [P66614][NTf2], [P44414][DBS], and [P4442][DEP] showed corrosion activity; the ionic liquids with more reactive phosphate type anion ([P66614][BEHP] and [P4442][DEP]) had the best tribological behavior; the best tribological results were related to the tribofilm formation of two phosphate species

    Antifriction and Antiwear Properties of an Ionic Liquid with Fluorine-Containing Anion Used as Lubricant Additive.

    Tribological behavior of trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide [P66614][NTf2] ionic liquid (IL) used as additive in a diester oil at concentrations of 0.25, 0.5 and 1 wt% was studied in this research. The IL solubility in the base oil was measured using the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) technique, and corrosion analysis was done at room temperature at relative humidity of 49–77%. Tribological tests were conducted for 30 min at room temperature, 15 Hz frequency, 4 mm of stroke length, a load of 80 N (corresponding to 2 GPa of maximum contact pressure) and relative humidity of 35–53%. Friction coefficient was recorded during tests, and the wear scar was measured by confocal microscopy. Worn surface was also analyzed by SEM, EDS and XPS. Results showed that a saturated solution of [P66614][NTf2] in the base oil contains about 30 wt% of IL and corrosion activity for the highest concentration of IL (1 wt%) was not found after a 20-day test. Although the base oil and the mixtures had similar friction behavior, only the 1 wt% sample exhibited slightly lower wear volume than the base oil. SEM images exhibited similar wear track width (707–796 µm) and wear mechanism (adhesive) for all samples tested. In addition, the EDS spectra only showed the elements present in the steel. Finally, the XPS measurements could not detect differences regarding iron chemical state among the samples, which is consistent with the tribological behavior obtained

    Ionic liquid synthesis in a microstructured reactor for process intensification

    Ionic liquids (IL) are the focus of growing interest over the last few years due to their low vapour pressure being beneficial for replacing common organic solvents with high vapour pressure. IL synthesised via alkylation are produced in batch or semi-batch stirred tank reactors. The reaction is highly exothermic and the kinetics was shown to be fast. The heat management during the reactor operation is a crucial point leading to high quality IL product and avoiding thermal runaway. This study reports the use of a microstructured reactor (MSR) system for the production of ethylmethylimidazole ethylsulfate by a solvent-free alkylation reaction. A combination of MSR and two tubular capillary reactors operating at two different cooling temperatures has been proposed. The save and stable operation of this reactor system is proven experimentally rendering the IL of high quality. The specific reactor performance was about 4 kg m-3 s-1 being ca. 3 orders of magnitude higher as compared to more traditional reactors

    A potential novel rapid screening NMR approach to boundary film formation at solid interfaces in contact with ionic liquids

    The boundary films generated oil a series of inorganic compounds, typical of native films oil metal and ceramic surfaces, when exposed to various ionic liquids (ILs) based oil the trihexyl(teti-adecyl)phosphonium cation have been characterized using multinuclear solid-state NMR. The NMR results indicate that SiO2 and Mg(OH)(2) interact strongly with the anion and cation of each IL through a mechanism of adsorption of the anion and subsequent close proximity of the cation in a surface double layer as observed through H-1-Si-29 cross polarization experiments). In contrast, Al2O3, MgO, ZnO, and ZrO2 appear less active, strongly suggesting the necessity of hydroxylated surface groups ill order to enhance the generation of these interfacial films. Using solid-state NMR to characterize Such interfaces not only has the potential to elucidate mechanisms of wear resistance and corrosion protection via iLs, but is also likely to allow their rapid screening for such durability applications

    Halide-Free Synthesis and Tribological Performance of Oil-Miscible Ammonium and Phosphonium-Based Ionic Liquids

    Due to their low vapor pressures, nonflammability, high thermal stabilities, and excellent tribological properties ionic liquids (ILs) are highly attractive lubricant base oils and additives. However, for practical applications of ILs in lubrication, two requirements are often limiting, the required miscibility with standard mineral oils (≥5 wt %) and the complete absence of corrosive halide ions in the ionic liquid. Moreover, the need for full compatibility with standard oil additives reduces the number of potential IL-based lubricant additives even further. In this contribution, an economic halide-free synthesis route to oil-miscible ionic liquids is presented, and very promising tribological properties of such ILs as base oil or additive are demonstrated. Therefore, sliding tests on bearing steel and XPS analysis of the formed surface films are shown. Corrosion test results of different bearing metals in contact with our halide-free ILs and (salt) water prove their applicability as real life lubricants. In the sustainable chemistry and engineering context, we present a halide-free design approach for ionic performance chemicals that may contribute to significant energy savings due to their enhanced lubrication properties
