AMPing Racial Attitudes: Comparing the Power of Explicit and Implicit Racism Measures in 2008
In 2008, ANES included for the first time—along with standard explicit measures of old-fashioned and symbolic racism—the Affect Misattribution Procedure (AMP), a relatively new implicit measure of racial attitudes. This article examines the extent to which four different measures of racial prejudice (three explicit and one implicit) predict public opinion during and after the 2008 election, including Americans' views towards several racial policy issues, their evaluations of, and feelings toward, Barack Obama, and their attitudes toward a Black president in general. Oversamples of African American and Latino respondents in the 2008 ANES enable us to broaden our tests of these measures beyond traditional White samples. We find that racial prejudice played an important role for all racial/ethnic groups but that the traditional explicit measures of racism are by far the stronger predictors for all of our dependent variables (compared to the new implicit measure) for both White and Black respondents. Interpreting Quality-of-Life Questionnaires in Patients with Long-Standing Facial Palsy
Objective(s): To interpret change in quality-of-life scores in facial palsy patients by calculating the smallest detectable change (SDC) and minimal important change (MIC) for the Facial Disability Index (FDI), Facial Clinimetric Evaluation (FaCE) scale, and Synkinesis Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ). Materials and Methods: The SDC, for individuals and groups, was calculated using previously collected test-retest data (2-week interval). The MIC (predictive modeling method) was calculated in a second similar facial palsy population using two measurements (1-1.5-year interval) and an anchor question assessing perceived change. Results: SDC(individual) of FaCE was 17.6 and SAQ was 28.2. SDC(group) of FaCE was 2.9 and SAQ was 4.6 (n = 62). Baseline FaCE and SAQ scores were 43.3 (interquartile range [IQR]: 35.8;55.0) and 51.1 (IQR: 32.2;60.0), respectively. MIC for important improvement of FDI physical/social function, FaCE total, and SAQ total were 4.4, 0.4, 0.7, and 2.8, respectively (n = 88). MIC for deterioration was 8.2, -1.8, -8.5, and 0.6, respectively. Baseline scores were 70.0 (IQR: 60.0;80.0), 76.0 (68.0;88.0), 55.0 (IQR: 40.0;61.7), and 26.7 (IQR: 22.2;35.6), respectively. Number of participants reporting important change for the different questionnaires ranged from 3 to 23 per subscale. Conclusion: Interpreting change scores of the FDI, FaCE, and SAQ is appropriate for groups, but for individual patients it is limited by a substantial SDC
Cardiac MRI in diagnosis, prognosis, and follow-up of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in children: current perspectives
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is an inherited myocardial disease characterised by left ventricular hypertrophy, which carries an increased risk of life-threatening arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. The age of presentation and the underlying aetiology have a significant impact on the prognosis and quality of life of children with HCM, as childhood-onset HCM is associated with high mortality risk and poor long-term outcomes. Accurate cardiac assessment and identification of the HCM phenotype are therefore crucial to determine the diagnosis, prognostic stratification, and follow-up. Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is a comprehensive evaluation tool capable of providing information on cardiac morphology and function, flow, perfusion, and tissue characterisation. CMR allows to detect subtle abnormalities in the myocardial composition and characterise the heterogeneous phenotypic expression of HCM. In particular, the detection of the degree and extent of myocardial fibrosis, using late-gadolinium enhanced sequences or parametric mapping, is unique for CMR and is of additional value in the clinical assessment and prognostic stratification of paediatric HCM patients. Additionally, childhood HCM can be progressive over time. The rate, timing, and degree of disease progression vary from one patient to the other, so close cardiac monitoring and serial follow-up throughout the life of the diagnosed patients is of paramount importance. In this review, an update of the use of CMR in childhood HCM is provided, focussing on its clinical role in diagnosis, prognosis, and serial follow-up
User requirements for national research and education networks for research in West and Central Africa
National research and education networks (NRENs) play a critical role in the development of communication
network infrastructure and networked services for researchers and educators. They help close ‘digital divides’
between and within countries and are an essential factor for national and international development. In collaboration
with the West and Central African Research and Education Network (WACREN), the TANDEM
project has developed a roadmap for the development of NRENs in the region. This was based on the results
of a survey that was conducted to investigate user requirements of networked services. The analysis of the 561
responses to a three-part questionnaire divided into 11 education, 22 research and 2 technical management
questions identified key educational and research service needs. This article reports on the results of the survey
with respect to research services. Highlights include respondents wanting regular access to online conference and
academic articles (89%), a range of research services including online library resources, video conferencing,
collaboration tools, online data access and storage, online library resources and inter-university login (>87%),
access to remote computing facilities (80%) and high performance computing facilities (77%). A desire to share
data with others online (74%) was also identified. Respondents also indicated that they would like to access
research services through a range of device types–Laptops (96%), Fixed PC (86%) and Mobile Devices (81%).

Alpha-band rhythms in visual task performance: phase-locking by rhythmic sensory stimulation
Oscillations are an important aspect of neuronal activity. Interestingly, oscillatory patterns are also observed in behaviour, such as in visual performance measures after the presentation of a brief sensory event in the visual or another modality. These oscillations in visual performance cycle at the typical frequencies of brain rhythms, suggesting that perception may be closely linked to brain oscillations. We here investigated this link for a prominent rhythm of the visual system (the alpha-rhythm, 8-12 Hz) by applying rhythmic visual stimulation at alpha-frequency (10.6 Hz), known to lead to a resonance response in visual areas, and testing its effects on subsequent visual target discrimination. Our data show that rhythmic visual stimulation at 10.6 Hz: 1) has specific behavioral consequences, relative to stimulation at control frequencies (3.9 Hz, 7.1 Hz, 14.2 Hz), and 2) leads to alpha-band oscillations in visual performance measures, that 3) correlate in precise frequency across individuals with resting alpha-rhythms recorded over parieto-occipital areas. The most parsimonious explanation for these three findings is entrainment (phase-locking) of ongoing perceptually relevant alpha-band brain oscillations by rhythmic sensory events. These findings are in line with occipital alpha-oscillations underlying periodicity in visual performance, and suggest that rhythmic stimulation at frequencies of intrinsic brain-rhythms can be used to reveal influences of these rhythms on task performance to study their functional roles

A Combined Nucleic Acid and Protein Analysis in Friedreich Ataxia: Implications for Diagnosis, Pathogenesis and Clinical Trial Design
BACKGROUND:
Friedreich's ataxia (FRDA) is the most common hereditary ataxia among caucasians. The molecular defect in FRDA is the trinucleotide GAA expansion in the first intron of the FXN gene, which encodes frataxin. No studies have yet reported frataxin protein and mRNA levels in a large cohort of FRDA patients, carriers and controls.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:
We enrolled 24 patients with classic FRDA phenotype (cFA), 6 late onset FRDA (LOFA), all homozygous for GAA expansion, 5 pFA cases who harbored the GAA expansion in compound heterozygosis with FXN point mutations (namely, p.I154F, c.482+3delA, p.R165P), 33 healthy expansion carriers, and 29 healthy controls. DNA was genotyped for GAA expansion, mRNA/FXN was quantified in real-time, and frataxin protein was measured using lateral-flow immunoassay in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Mean residual levels of frataxin, compared to controls, were 35.8%, 65.6%, 33%, and 68.7% in cFA, LOFA, pFA and healthy carriers, respectively. Comparison of both cFA and pFA with controls resulted in 100% sensitivity and specificity, but there was overlap between LOFA, carriers and controls. Frataxin levels correlated inversely with GAA1 and GAA2 expansions, and directly with age at onset. Messenger RNA expression was reduced to 19.4% in cFA, 50.4% in LOFA, 52.7% in pFA, 53.0% in carriers, as compared to controls (p<0.0001). mRNA levels proved to be diagnostic when comparing cFA with controls resulting in 100% sensitivity and specificity. In cFA and LOFA patients mRNA levels correlated directly with protein levels and age at onset, and inversely with GAA1 and GAA2.
CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE:
We report the first explorative study on combined frataxin and mRNA levels in PBMCs from a cohort of FRDA patients, carriers and healthy individuals. Bat lung epithelial cells show greater host species-specific innate resistance than MDCK cells to human and avian influenza viruses
Background
With the recent discovery of novel H17N10 and H18N11 influenza viral RNA in bats and report on high frequency of avian H9 seroconversion in a species of free ranging bats, an important issue to address is the extent bats are susceptible to conventional avian and human influenza A viruses.
Method
To this end, three bat species (Eidolon helvum, Carollia perspicillata and Tadarida brasiliensis) of lung epithelial cells were separately infected with two avian and two human influenza viruses to determine their relative host innate immune resistance to infection.
Results
All three species of bat cells were more resistant than positive control Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells to all four influenza viruses. TB1-Lu cells lacked sialic acid α2,6-Gal receptors and were most resistant among the three bat species. Interestingly, avian viruses were relatively more replication permissive in all three bat species of cells than with the use of human viruses which suggest that bats could potentially play a role in the ecology of avian influenza viruses. Chemical inhibition of the JAK-STAT pathway in bat cells had no effect on virus production suggesting that type I interferon signalling is not a major factor in resisting influenza virus infection.
Conclusion
Although all three species of bat cells are relatively more resistant to influenza virus infection than control MDCK cells, they are more permissive to avian than human viruses which suggest that bats could have a contributory role in the ecology of avian influenza viruses
Global analysis of depletion and recovery of seabed biota after bottom trawling disturbance
Bottom trawling is the most widespread human activity affecting seabed habitats. Here, we collate all available data for experimental and comparative studies of trawling impacts on whole communities of seabed macroinvertebrates on sedimentary habitats and develop widely applicable methods to estimate depletion and recovery rates of biota after trawling. Depletion of biota and trawl penetration into the seabed are highly correlated. Otter trawls caused the least depletion, removing 6% of biota per pass and penetrating the seabed on average down to 2.4 cm, whereas hydraulic dredges caused the most depletion, removing 41% of biota and penetrating the seabed on average 16.1 cm. Median recovery times posttrawling (from 50 to 95% of unimpacted biomass) ranged between 1.9 and 6.4 y. By accounting for the effects of penetration depth, environmental variation, and uncertainty, the models explained much of the variability of depletion and recovery estimates from single studies. Coupled with large-scale, high-resolution maps of trawling frequency and habitat, our estimates of depletion and recovery rates enable the assessment of trawling impacts on unprecedented spatial scales
