Coherence resonance in an unijunction transistor relaxation oscillator
The phenomenon of coherence resonance (CR) is investigated in an unijunction
transistor relaxation oscillator (UJT-RO) and quantified by estimating the
normal variance (NV). Depending upon the measuring points two types of NV
curves have been obtained. We have observed that the degradations in coherency
at higher noise amplitudes in our system is probably the result of direct
interference of coherent oscillations and the stochastic perturbation.
Degradation of coherency may be minimal if this direct interference of noise
and coherent oscillations is eliminated.Comment: 4 pages, Coherence resonace, Uni junction relaxation oscillato
Chaotic to ordered state transition of cathode-sheath instabilities in DC glow discharge plasmas
Transition from chaotic to ordered state has been observed during the initial
stage of a discharge in a cylindrical dc glow discharge plasma. Initially it
shows a chaotic behavior but increasing the discharge voltage changes the
characteristics of the discharge glow and shows a period substraction of order
7 period 5 period 3 period 1 period i.e. the system goes to
single mode through odd cycle subtraction. On further increasing the discharge
voltage, the system goes through period doubling, like 1 period 2 period
4 period. On further increasing the voltage, the system goes to stable
state without having any oscillations.Comment: chathode-sheath, instabilities, chaos, period-subtraction,

Design of Resilient Ethernet Ring Protection (ERP) Mesh Networks With Improved Service Availability
Ethernet Ring Protection (ERP) has recently emerged to provide protection switching for Ethernet ring topologies with sub-50 ms failover capabilities. ERP's promise to provide protection in mesh packet transport networks positions Ethernet as a prominent competitor to conventional SONET/SDH and as the technology of choice for carrier networks. Higher service availability, however, in ERP has been challenged by the issue of network partitioning and contention for shared capacity caused by concurrent failures. In this paper, we show that in a network designed to withstand single-link failure, the service availability, in the presence of double link failures, depends on the designed ERP scheme, i.e., the RPL placement as well as the selection of ring hierarchy. Therefore, we present a study for characterizing service outages and propose a design method which strikes a balance between capacity requirement and service availability (i.e., the number of service outages resulting from concurrent failures). We observe that through effective design, remarkable reduction in service outages is obtained at a modest increase in capacity deployment
Comparative study of nonlinear properties of EEG signals of a normal person and an epileptic patient
Background: Investigation of the functioning of the brain in living systems
has been a major effort amongst scientists and medical practitioners. Amongst
the various disorder of the brain, epilepsy has drawn the most attention
because this disorder can affect the quality of life of a person. In this paper
we have reinvestigated the EEGs for normal and epileptic patients using
surrogate analysis, probability distribution function and Hurst exponent.
Results: Using random shuffled surrogate analysis, we have obtained some of
the nonlinear features that was obtained by Andrzejak \textit{et al.} [Phys Rev
E 2001, 64:061907], for the epileptic patients during seizure. Probability
distribution function shows that the activity of an epileptic brain is
nongaussian in nature. Hurst exponent has been shown to be useful to
characterize a normal and an epileptic brain and it shows that the epileptic
brain is long term anticorrelated whereas, the normal brain is more or less
stochastic. Among all the techniques, used here, Hurst exponent is found very
useful for characterization different cases.
Conclusions: In this article, differences in characteristics for normal
subjects with eyes open and closed, epileptic subjects during seizure and
seizure free intervals have been shown mainly using Hurst exponent. The H shows
that the brain activity of a normal man is uncorrelated in nature whereas,
epileptic brain activity shows long range anticorrelation.Comment: Keywords:EEG, epilepsy, Correlation dimension, Surrogate analysis,
