GsymPoint: An R Package to Estimate the Generalized Symmetry Point, an Optimal Cut-off Point for Binary Classification in Continuous Diagnostic Tests

    Get PDF
In clinical practice, it is very useful to select an optimal cutpoint in the scale of a continuous biomarker or diagnostic test for classifying individuals as healthy or diseased. Several methods for choosing optimal cutpoints have been presented in the literature, depending on the ultimate goal. One of these methods, the generalized symmetry point, recently introduced, generalizes the symmetry point by incorporating the misclassification costs. Two statistical approaches have been proposed in the literature for estimating this optimal cutpoint and its associated sensitivity and specificity measures, a parametric method based on the generalized pivotal quantity and a nonparametric method based on empirical likelihood. In this paper, we introduce GsymPoint, an R package that implements these methods in a user-friendly environment, allowing the end-user to calculate the generalized symmetry point depending on the levels of certain categorical covariates. The practical use of this package is illustrated using three real biomedical datasetsThis research has been supported by several Grants from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. M. Selecting and Customizing a Mereology Ontology for its Reuse in a Pharmaceutical Product Ontology

    Get PDF
This paper presents our experience in reusing mereology ontologies in a Pharmaceutical Product ontology, an ontology built by the EU NeOn project. It shows a set of mereology ontologies implemented in different machine interpretable languages and analyzes them according to the different types of mereology identified by Varzi. Then, it describes the specifications of mereology modeling necessities for Pharmaceutical Product. Finally, it presents the ontology which fits best with the specifications. One of the results of this work is a procedure to reuse general (also called common) ontologies

    Get PDF

Methodological guidelines for reusing general ontologies

    Get PDF
Currently, there is a great deal of well-founded explicit knowledge formalizing general notions, such as time concepts and the part_of relation. Yet, it is often the case that instead of reusing ontologies that implement such notions (the so-called general ontologies), engineers create procedural programs that implicitly implement this knowledge. They do not save time and code by reusing explicit knowledge, and devote effort to solve problems that other people have already adequately solved. Consequently, we have developed a methodology that helps engineers to: (a) identify the type of general ontology to be reused; (b) find out which axioms and definitions should be reused; (c) make a decision, using formal concept analysis, on what general ontology is going to be reused; and (d) adapt and integrate the selected general ontology in the domain ontology to be developed. To illustrate our approach we have employed use-cases. For each use case, we provide a set of heuristics with examples. Each of these heuristics has been tested in either OWL or Prolog. Our methodology has been applied to develop a pharmaceutical product ontology. Additionally, we have carried out a controlled experiment with graduated students doing a MCs in Artificial Intelligence. This experiment has yielded some interesting findings concerning what kind of features the future extensions of the methodology should have

Determination of potentials of farming and forestry of the Municipality of Guisa, Cuba

Cuban government has established new regulations to handover in usufruct idle lands for food production to people or groups of people. In agreement with these, a rapid process of occupying again the rural area is being developed in Cuba, but the real potentialities of lands and the current environmental regulations for the occupation of these areas are not always taken into account. This research aims to obtain coverage maps by means of digital editing of Landsat TM images, the creation of models in GIS (Geographic Information System) and the current environmental regulations analysis for each proposed use. Furthermore, this study offers to the municipality of Guisa an outlook of potentials of farming and forestry for its right use according to food production. Finally, this article establishes that the territory, even though 70 % of it is mountainous, counts on suitable places for food production without endangering the protection of the environment.Fil: Ramón Puebla, Adonis M.. Biologically oriented preparation technique (BOPT) is a vertical preparation technique without a finish line to create a new anatomic crown with a prosthetic emergence profile. This case report describe the protocol realized digitally in a patient who required a new fixed partial denture (FPD) in the anterior esthetic zone. After time of temporary restoration, definitive conventional (CI) (double-cord retraction and vinyl polysiloxane material), and digital impression (DI) with three different intraoral scanner (IOS) (Trios®, True Definition® and iTero®) were taken. All digital impression were obtained through three different scans: temporary restoration in the mouth after healing period, prepared teeth, and temporary restoration out of the mouth. To establish which of the IOS was the most accurate, it was necessary to compare the STL files obtained from each of the IOS with the STL file of the conventional impression, which was digitized with a laboratory scanner (3Shape D800). All these STL were imported to a software (ExoCAD 2.4 Plovdiv®), and they were superimposed. To establish the difference in trueness with SC, 6 points were chosen, 3 points in teeth, and another 3 points in soft tissue. The mean measurement in terms of trueness in teeth were: STS (0,039 mm), SI (0,054 mm), STD (0,067 mm); and in soft tissue were: STS (0,051 mm), SI (0,09 mm), STD [0,236 mm]. The IOSs showed differences between them in terms of trueness, being the Trios the most accuracy IOS. Final restoration was fabricated and cemented. The patient was examined at 3, 6 and 12 months, without any type of biological or mechanical complications. Digital impression with an IOS seems to be a viable alternative to perform zirconia FPD in the BOPT tecbique

Strength distribution of solar magnetic fields in photospheric quiet Sun regions

The magnetic topology of the solar photosphere in its quietest regions is hidden by the difficulties to disentangle magnetic flux through the resolution element from the field strength of unresolved structures. The observation of spectral lines with strong coupling with hyperfine structure, like the observed MnI line at 553.7 nm, allows such differentiation. The main aim is to analyse the distribution of field strengths in the network and intranetwork of the solar photosphere through inversion of the MnI line at 553.7 nm. An inversion code for the magnetic field using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) has been developed. Statistical tests are run on the code to validate it. The code has to draw information from the small-amplitude spectral feature oppearing in the core of the Stokes V profile of the observed line for field strengths below a certain threshold, coinciding with lower limit of the Paschen-Back effect in the fine structure of the involved atomic levels. The inversion of the observed profiles, using the circular polarization (V) and the intensity (I), shows the presence of magnetic fields strengths in a range from 0 to 2 kG, with predominant weak strength values. Mixed regions with mean strength field values of 1130 and 435 Gauss are found associated with the network and intranetwork respectively. The MnI line at 553 nm probes the field strength distribution in the quiet sun and shows the predominance of weak, hectoGauss fields in the intranetwork, and strong, kiloGauss fields in the network. It also shows that both network and intranetwork are to be understood at our present spatial resolutions as field distributions of which we hint the mean properties.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
