In this paper we are presenting the results of our environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) investigation of the lignin model compound-enzymatically polymerized coniferyl alcohol, also known as dehydrogenate polymer (DHP). The goals of this study were to visualize the supramolecular organization of DHP polymer on various substrates, namely graphite, mica, and glass, and to explore the influence of substrate surface properties and associated collective phenomena on the lignin self-assembled supramolecular structure. Based on results obtained with ESEM, combined with previously published results based on scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and electron spin resonance (ESR) technique, we looked at Lignin structure ranging from a monomer on a fraction of nanometer scale to a large aggregate on a fraction of millimeter scale. therefore using six orders of magnitude range of size. Herein, we are presenting evidence that there are at least four different levels of the supramolecular structure of lignin, and that its supramolecular organization is well dependent on the substrate surface characteristics, such as hydrophobicity, delocalized orbitals, and surface-free entry

The aim of this paper is to present the post mortem dental evidence and dental health of the victims interred during 1999 in five grave pits at Batajnica near Belgrade. The investigated sample comprised 32 individuals with only maxillae preserved, 80 with mandible, and 260 individuals with both jaws. We have found high degree of enamel hypoplasia (25.89%), frequent signs of the severe forms of periodontal disease (18.55%), very high percent of antemortem tooth loss (31.48%), and evidence of edentate jaws in an early age of individuals. Amalgam was predominant material for tooth fillings; implants and non-metal ceramic crowns were not found, and three quaters of edentate individuals were found with full prostetic dentures. Despite the detailed postmortem dental analysis, antemortem dental charts were not collected. These individuals were identified by other forensic methods

Determination of copper and nickel by ion chromatography and voltammetry

    Get PDF
Simultaneous determination of copper(II) and nickel(II) by ion chromatography (IC) has been optimized and the detection limits of the new method were compared to stripping voltammetry. The best eluent enabling fast end efficient separation of Cu(II) and Ni(II) is a mixture of 8 mM citric and 0.3 mM oxalic acid using a Metrosep C2 (Metrohm) IC column. The detection limits are significantly lower using stripping voltammetry, while IC is considerably faster.Physical chemistry 2008 : 9th international conference on fundamental and applied aspects of physical chemistry; Belgrade (Serbia); 24-28 September 200

    Voltammetric determination of lutetium

Half wave potential of lutetium was determined by anodic stripping voltammetry using various electrolyte solutions at the mercury electrode. The influence of electrolyte pH on the value of peak current was also observed. The results show that the choice of the supporting electrolyte and the electrolyte pH strongly influence the voltammetric behaviour of lutetium.Physical chemistry 2006 : 8th international conference on fundamental and applied aspects of physical chemistry; Belgrade (Serbia); 26-29 September 200

Background: The term “enthesis” is usually used to mark the sites of muscle attachments, as well as attachments of ligaments and joint capsules to bones. In the last three decades, studies concerning entheses in human skeletal remains have attempted to reconstruct the habitual physical activities of past populations. The evaluation of entheseal morphological appearance was suggested for the identification of gross workload patterns, which could be used in the interpretation of labour division on a gender, age or social basis in ancient populations. There have been four major research streams in literature with regard to entheses and entheseal changes (EC). The first group of studies mainly focused on the analysis of the histological structure of the attachment site. The second group of studies focused of visual scoring methods based on the macromorphological features of the attachment surface with the aim of evaluating the degree of muscle use. The third group included studies dealing with the relationship between EC and the biomechanical properties of long bones, while a fourth group of studies was aimed at reconstructing the habitual physical activities of past populations, using visual scoring methods. Regardless of the fact that habitual physical activities or stress patterns of past populations are frequently reconstructed based on EC, there is no direct experimental evidence for the relationship between muscular activity and particular macroscopic entheseal scores. Although entheses were investigated from macroscopic, histological and biomechanical aspects, it is surprising that microarchitectural studies of the underlying bone are still lacking, despite the well-known potential of bone microarchitecture to reflect mechanical loading. It is widely accepted that the bone adapts its structure to changes in its mechanical environment, and a number of studies have reported the relationship between bone microarchitecture and loading patterns in different skeletal sites. However, despite numerous studies reporting that bone morphology is affected by mechanical loads and that bone has a self-optimising capability, there is no comprehensive study dealing with this issue in the region of the entheses..

The author discusses how the autonomy of the will of the contracting parties can be limited in terms of exoneration clauses. The introductory part of the paper defines exoneration clauses and presents the advantages as well as the risks they might cause. The main part of the paper presents the limitations of contracting exoneration clauses in French, Swiss and English law. Finally, the author analyses the differences between the ways in which the presented comparative legal systems set limits in terms of contracting exoneration clauses. She concludes that French and Swiss law prescribe restrictions with regard to the content of the clause, while English courts take into account the procedural aspect, i.e. the behaviour of the contracting parties while negotiating.

This is an open access article under the CC BY-NC-ND license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/).Parasite-derived PVM-resident proteins are critical for complete parasite development inside hepatocytes, although the function of most of these proteins remains unknown. Here, we show that the upregulated in infectious sporozoites 4 (UIS4) protein, resident at the PVM, interacts with the host cell actin. By suppressing filamentous actin formation, UIS4 avoids parasite elimination. Host cell actin dynamics increases around UIS4-deficient parasites, which is associated with subsequent parasite elimination. Notably, parasite elimination is impaired significantly by the inhibition of host myosin-II, possibly through relieving the compression generated by actomyosin complexes at the host-parasite interface. Together, these data reveal that UIS4 has a critical role in the evasion of host defensive mechanisms, enabling hence EEF survival and development. This work was supported by grants from the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (DRIVER-LISBOA-01-0145-FEDER-030751) and “la Caixa” Foundation (under the agreement HR17/52150010) to M.M.M. and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation short project to V.M’B. and M.M.M..
